Accepted 6 August, 2009 Ximenia americana, a medicinal plant, was evaluated for free radical scavenging and antioxidant activity. The extracts from the stem bark was obtained using methanol. The methanol portion was again fractionated into flavonoid and saponnin portions. The antioxidant activity of the portions was assessed by the 2, 2 diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) assay. The flavonoid portion revealed a significant (P < 0.05) antioxidant activity with the Rc 50 value of 8. The study reveals that X. americana could be used as a potential antioxidant. Key words: Ximenia americana , flavonoid, antioxidant activity. INTRODUCTION There is renewed interest in the potentials of medicinal fruit when eaten is refreshing and has an almond acid plants as antioxidants in reducing free radical-induced taste. The plant is used in traditional medicine for tissue injury (Atawodi, 2005; Pourmorad et al., 2006) and treatment of malaria, fever, leprotic ulcers and skin usage as antioxidant in foods and cosmetics. -

Akhtar Siddiqui4, Umar Jahangir5* 1,2,3 M.D. Scholar, 4 Professor, 5 Assistant Professor Department of Moalajat, School of Unani Medical Education and Research Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi, India ABSTRACT The therapeutic use of the wormwood plant Artemisia absinthium L. dates back to at least Roman times. There are more than 200 plants in the genus Artemisia- including southern wormwood, petite wormwood and Grande wormwood and encompasses about 500 species. The best-known species of wormwood is Artemisia absinthium, native to temperate Eurasia and North Africa and is branded for its extreme bitterness. It is a magical greens booze used as carminative to support healthy appetite, balances healthy flora, cleanse the digestive tract of parasite and toxins. It possesses anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, hepatoprotective, anti-helminthic and anti-depressant activity. Thujone excites nervous system when taken in small amount. Due to contrary history of wormwood, its application in individuals should be preceded by a thorough and cautious risk-benefit analysis. In this appraisal an attempt is done to validate scientifically, mentioned therapeutic potential of Artemisia absinthium in classical Unani literature using PubMed, Science Direct researches. Transverse, tangential and radial longitudinal sections and macerated samples were prepared into microscopic slides. Characteristic similarity and disparity in the tissues arrangement as well as cell inclusions were noted for description and delimitation. All the five Cola species studied had essentially the same anatomical features, but the difficulty posed by the identification of Cola acuminata and Cola nitida when not in fruit could be resolved using anatomical features. Cola acuminata have extensive fibre and numerous crystals relative to Cola nitida, while Cola hispida and Cola millenii are the only species having monohydric crystals. Cola gigantica is the only species that have few xylem fibres while other species have extensive xylem fibre. -
