and District Photographic Society

Masque Theatre, Latimer Arts College, Castle Way, Barton Seagrave, Kettering, NN15 6SW Newsletter for the month of April Introduction by John Spowart (Chairman)

Introduction by John Spowart (Chairman) As Chairman it gives me great pleasure to introduce the first edition of our Monthly Newsletter. This will be produced each month by our volunteer editor (Claire Hope) who also happens to be our youngest member but who is proving to be a real asset to the club. Each month we will include details of forthcoming events and dates to remember as well as formally welcoming new members. There will also be a section detailing any workshops and details of what's on that is worth seeing and/or photographing. We will also have a section detailing any items for sale or items wanted within the club. I am sure that as time goes by the Newsletter will become an integral part of the club and a valuable resource. Finally I am sure you will all join me in wishing Claire every success in her new role which will be supported by Sarah Frankham and Sue Brooks, so many thanks to them as well.

Monday 7 th April Guest Speaker: Jim Hartje

Subject: Photo Fusion – Creative Awareness

About the speaker:

Originally from Surrey Jim Hartje moved to Peterborough in 1974 with a young family and got really interested in photography as they grew up. He has been a member of Peterborough Photographic Society since 1981 and he is now their Web Master. He is an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society, a North & Photographic Federation Lecturer and a Photographic Alliance of Great Britain Judge. He is also the holder of the Excellence FIAP, and British Photographic Exhibition 5 Crown distinctions – through successful participation in both national & international exhibitions.

In his formative years, Jim dabbled in both monochrome & colour printing, but was more widely known for his derivative work in the darkroom in Pictorial Slides, and Natural History – with his Wide Angle Fungi shots in Habitat. Jim has always been fascinated by computers which have now become a creative aid to his photography. He says: ‘The transition from film to digital capture now kind of gives you a second chance to get it right if you did not quite achieve that at the time of taking. I firmly believe that there is not a camera in existence that will take the perfect picture as you actually see it at the time, so there is always the need for some, if only minor, tweaking.’

Monday 28 th April Guest Speaker: Peter Preece

Subject: Wildlife Photography

About the speaker:

My name is Peter Preece and I am a Wildlife Photographer. I hope you enjoy slowly browsing through the images shown which I hope to add to and update on a regular basis. For many years both myself and my wife Margaret have belonged to local Photographic Societies, including Smethwick, Solihull, Droitwich and our local club, Cookhill and Studley. We are both retired and spend a lot of time travelling around the U.K. and Europe photographing everything we find, from insects to animals.

Over the last 12 years we have visited about 900 venues where Peter has shown his illustrated talks to Natural History Societies, Photographic Societies, W.I.'s, Probus Clubs and other organisations interested in Wildlife. A lot of our photography is done from hides situated in areas where we attract in birds such as jay, buzzard, nuthatch etc. and are based in Warwickshire close to where we live. These hides are baited up every two days to set up feeding stations which have produced many successful images in national and international exhibitions for both ourselves and people who have been invited to these hides.
