The iF product award a design distinction with international recognition value

As one of the world´s oldest design competitions, the iF award can look back on a rich, long tradition. This seal of fine design quality, in the shape of a square, red logo with its distinctive lettering, has stood for qualitatively outstanding design awards for over 50 years. Last year a jury of specialists evaluated 2,292 entries from 35 different nations, the best of which were selected for an award and publicized internationally. And in 2008 this awards contest is again dedicated to promoting awareness of the significance of excellent design, as well as to providing corporations with an opportunity to go up directly against the competition and the interested public with a platform for fine design. This is because the by now 14 categories in the iF product design award give you an idea of the complexity of contemporary design and the broad spectrum it covers. All prizewinners can be proud of their design achievements and can communicate them in their press and PR work as well as their marketing campaigns. Each winner receives a coveted iF certificate, which retains its validity for the entire product lifecycle.

The iF product design award 2008 is open to all enterprises and until September 15, 2007.

Jury

Year after year we are delighted at being able to attract international judges of the highest caliber, who are extremely dedicated, critical and passionate in their discussions and their overall approach to the task of judging our events. The non-public judging session for the iF design award 2008 will take place in November 2007. The results of this session will determine which of the companies and designers, in the eyes of the judges, have met the iF criteria of design excellence.

No member of the judging panel can take part in the adjudication process for more than two years in a row. If one of the judges has any direct involvement with one of the entries, he or she has no vote. The decision of the panel here - as in the screening round - is final, and no correspondence will be entered into.

Terms of entry

We are pleased to present you today with the Terms of Entry for the iF product design award 2008. This classic competition devoted to different product design disciplines was first offered by iF International Forum Design in 1954 and has since evolved to become one of the world s foremost design competitions.

Over the years we have continually adapted ourselves to market requirements, allowing us constantly present you with the most up-to-date design trends. In 2008 there will be 14 product categories, judged by an internationally recognized jury. Our expert judges will award a coveted iF seal of design excellence to the products that successfully fulfill contemporary design standards based on a comprehensive catalog of criteria.

Out of the pool of award winners, an additional group will be selected as recipients of the iF gold awards the so-called Design Oscars. These awards are reserved for the most outstanding winners of an iF product design award, and will be honored at an official ceremony on 4 March 2008 opening day of CeBIT where they will be presented with their golden iF statuettes.

Participation

The iF product design award 2008 competition is open to manufacturers and designers of mass-produced products which have been on the market for three years or less or which are scheduled to go into mass production during the year of competition.

My iF

1. Set up "My iF"

When you take part in an iF competition for the first time, you are asked to enter your contact and invoicing data on the My iF page. If you have already taken part in a previous competition and your login data is no longer available, please use the Forgot your password? function. Register competition entries

>Since it is possible to register for several competitions and projects at the same time, we ask you to pay careful attention to which online form you are opening within "My iF". Please submit one online form per competition entry.

3. Organize entries

In "My iF" you can get an overview of your current registrations in the My current entries category. You can update this data until shortly before the judging session.

Registration

Registration deadline for your online registration incl. two product photos:

By August 15, 2007: Early Bird: The registration fee is EUR 115 plus VAT

By September 15, 2007: Deadline: The registration fee is EUR 145 plus VAT

By September 30, 2007: Last Chance: The registration fee is EUR 205 plus VAT

After you have entered your contact data in My iF, you can register for the iF product design award 2008 competition. 6

If you want to register a complete product series for the iF product design award (e.g. a place setting consisting of plate, cup and saucer or a series of monitors in different sizes etc.) you can use a single form for this, too. The price is the same as for an individual product.

The online registration screen contains a text field entitled "Product information"; please use this field to enter a succinct description of your product and how it works, as well as any innovative design aspects of your competition entry in English (and preferably also in German, maximum 650 letters per language). This succinct information serves as an aid in screening entries as well as for the subsequent main judging round. Furthermore, if your product wins a prize, any existing text descriptions can be "recycled" for your entry in the iF yearbook product and the iF online exhibition; here, both languages are mandatory.

Please upload two photos per competition entry when registering. These photos serve as decision-making aids during the screening process. The photos must conform to the following specifications:

Resolution: 72 dpi Max. size: 300 x 300 pixels Color scheme: RGB Color depth: 24-bit Format: .jpg

The pictures are a binding part of your registration. Please have the files ready before opening the online entry form.

In the interest of equal treatment of all iF product design award contestants, we can only accept a maximum of two photos. Exceptions will only be granted for complex systems (e.g. production lines, systems for public areas, etc.). If you are submitting a complex system and would like to provide more than two photos, please send a short e- mail informing us of this to [email protected]. iF reserves the right to the final decision.

7

After we have received your online registration incl. two product photos:

* We will confirm receipt of your competition entry by issuing an entry ID for your entry. Please quote this entry ID in all your correspondence as well as on any deliveries and product or packaging labels. * We will mail you an invoice for the registration fee. Payable by bank transfer or check (see our banking details below). Unfortunately, we cannot accept payment by cash or credit card.

Please note that your invoicing address, once entered, cannot be subsequently changed.

Please also be aware that all information and pictures are needed from the very beginning due to the fact iF begins the screening process directly upon receiving your online registration.

Screening process

Based on your product information and the two product photos per registered entry, the jury chairperson will decide which products to invite to the judging session. You will be informed by e-mail of the results of this screening process.

Decisions are made on a continuous basis as registrations come in. Contestants who register early will learn of the results of the screening process earlier, and can thus make more timely arrangements for their products to be shipped.

The jury's decision is legally binding, and there is no legal recourse. We ask for your understanding that, owing to the large number of registrations received, we are unable to provide any individual justifications.

8

If you pass the screening process

1. We will e-mail you an invitation to compete in the main judging round, providing detailed information on how to ship your competition entry and on self-assembly procedures. 2. We will invoice contestants for a flat organizational overhead fee (for the costs of handling and presenting your product so it can be judged by the jury) in the amount of EUR 190 plus VAT for each product admitted to the main judging round.

No overhead fee is charged for competition entries in the advanced studies category.

9
