Pioneer Press (Raihala) p. 13 Mejia eyes more road success vs. Smith, A's Michael Wagaman | MLB.com | July 28, 2017 Minnesota left-hander Adalberto Mejia will try to get back on the winning track for the first time in nearly a month when the Twins play in Oakland on Saturday night, while the A's will counter with 36-year-old right-hander Chris Smith, who is seeking his first victory in nearly a decade. Mejia (4-4, 4.10 ERA) is coming off one of his shortest outings this season when he lasted just 4 1/3 innings against Detroit on July 23. Mejia battled control issues throughout the game, but he walked only two and limited the Tigers to one earned run on five hits. That continued a recent trend for Mejia, who has pitched mostly well in his third stint with the big league club but remains without a win since July 3. Over his past six starts, the 24-year-old pitcher owns a 2.38 ERA and has allowed one earned run or fewer in four of them. Smith (0-1, 3.32 ERA) has also pitched well for the A's, but he's still chasing his first win as a starting pitcher. His only other career win came in 2008 when he was a reliever with the Boston Red Sox. The right-hander was one out away and had family and friends ready to celebrate that elusive win against Tampa Bay on July 18 before closer Santiago Casilla blew a save opportunity in the ninth inning. Smith took the loss in his most recent start when he allowed three runs and walked three in six innings against Toronto on July 24. Equally important to Oakland manager Bob Melvin has been Smith's influence in the A's clubhouse. "Every day he comes out here, it's like his first day at the ballpark because he really feels like any day could potentially be his last, even though he's continued to perform for us," Melvin said. "Even sometimes when I'm down a little bit, you lose a few games in a row and you're not feeling great, you look at a guy like him and it can be inspirational for him. It's nice to have him here, and on top of that, he's performing." Things to know about this game • Smith has pitched twice previously against Minnesota, both times as a reliever in 2009. He had three scoreless innings during those two appearances. • Mejia will be making his sixth road start this season and has fared much better away from home than he has in Minnesota. Mejia is 2-1 with a 2.31 ERA on the road, compared to 2-3 with a 4.91 mark in 10 home starts. • A's All-Star first baseman Yonder Alonso might not play because of the left-handed Mejia. Alonso, who has been the subject of trade rumors, has been in a month-long funk at the plate and is hitting just .183 against lefties this season. Alonso did not start Friday's game. Buxton begins rehab, homers on first pitch Michael Wagaman | MLB.com | July 28, 2017 It took all of one pitch for Twins center fielder Byron Buxton to prove that he's healing just fine from the groin strain that landed him on the disabled list nearly two weeks ago. The headaches also appear to be over, too. Buxton kicked off his rehab assignment by homering on the game-opening pitch for Triple-A Rochester against Toledo on Friday night, an encouraging sign for the 23-year-old who was in his best offensive stretch of the season before getting hurt. Twins manager Paul Molitor said the decision to send Buxton on a rehab assignment came after he was unable to play earlier this week when Minnesota was in Los Angeles facing the Dodgers. Buxton was eligible to come off the disabled list on Tuesday, but he was held out longer when he began suffering from migraines. "It kind of materialized over the circumstances that arrived there in L.A.," Molitor said before the Twins began a three-game series in Oakland. "Originally if we had brought him back on his eligible day on Tuesday, it would have been a 10-day break. As it turned out, he missed a couple of days in L.A. with the migraines. We were looking at two weeks. I thought not only to make sure that leg was good but that the symptoms of the migraines were behind him, that to get out and play for the weekend makes sense." Buxton has struggled at the plate most of the season, but he had hit safely in six straight games before getting hurt. He was hitting .476 (11-for- 21) during that span with one home run, two walks and a pair of RBIs that raised his batting average to a season-high .218. Provided Buxton doesn't suffer a setback, it's likely that he could rejoin the Twins Tuesday in San Diego for the start of a three-game series against the Padres. Worth noting • Third baseman Miguel Sano was back in the lineup Friday night against the A's after sitting out two days with a bruised left hand he injured while getting hit by a pitch. Sano took batting practice earlier in the day to test the hand and came out of it fine. "The lineup looks better with his name in it," Molitor said. "He went out early today and took some batting practice, and I thought it started out a little bit like he was feeling his way, but he seemed to gain more confidence in that hand bruise with each swing that he took." • Molitor said that right-hander Phil Hughes would meet with a specialist in Dallas as he continues to deal with thoracic outlet syndrome. Hughes was placed on the 60-day DL earlier this month and he is not expected to pitch again this season. "I read a report that was quite extensive. I probably understood about 10 percent of the words that were in the report," Molitor said. "To me so far, in general, I think they've ruled out a lot of the things arm-related to the potential symptoms that he's encountering. A lot of things are pointing back to the root of it still being related to the thoracic elbow symptom." It was a year ago that Hughes underwent surgery to correct the issue. A rib that was causing the nerve and vascular impingement in his throwing shoulder was removed. Garcia gets win in gritty Twins debut Michael Wagaman | MLB.com | July 29, 2017 Left-hander Jaime Garcia walked a thin tightrope for most of the night in his Minnesota debut, working in and out of trouble during the Twins' 6- 3 win over the Oakland A's on Friday night, while giving scouts plenty of food for thought about a pitcher who potentially could be traded for the third time in eight months. 2 Four days after being acquired from the Atlanta Braves, Garcia had an uneven outing while limiting the A's to three runs over 6 2/3 innings. He allowed eight hits, walked three and struck out seven to pick up his first win in the American League after spending his first eight-plus seasons in the National League. "This is the first time in my career with all this stuff going on," Garcia said. "I've been around for a little while. Once I get between those two lines it's about competing. There's no excuses. It's just executing pitches until they take you out of the game." The milestone win didn't come easily for the 31-year-old Garcia. Oakland loaded the bases in the second before Garcia got Ryan Lavarnway to strike out swinging and then induced an inning-ending double play grounder out of Matt Joyce. The A's also got a leadoff double in the third but couldn't score, stranded another runner at second in the fourth and missed another opportunity in the fifth when Jed Lowrie hit into a double play with runners on the corners.

Atlanta Braves Clippings Monday, September 21, 2020 Braves.com Wright baffles Mets in 6 1/3-inning, 1-hit gem By Mark Bowman Ronald Acuña Jr. was bound to right himself before the postseason arrived. But the fact Kyle Wright has also started the regular season’s home stretch on a good note gives the Braves even more reason to be excited about what October might bring. Acuña’s solo homer provided all of the necessary support for Wright, who constructed a career-best start in the Braves’ 7-0 win over the Mets on Sunday afternoon at Citi Field. The right-hander’s confidence has grown significantly as he’s used his past two starts to show he has the potential to lessen concerns about the postseason rotation. “He’s been tremendous,” said catcher Travis d’Arnaud, who hit a two-run double in the eighth inning. “His demeanor on the mound and his demeanor in between innings, he’s been carrying himself really well. He’s just been attacking guys.” The Braves’ magic number to clinch a third consecutive National League East title has been reduced to six with seven games remaining, four of which will be played against the second-place Marlins this week. Looking ahead to the postseason, the Braves’ rotation will likely include Max Fried, Ian Anderson, Cole Hamels and Wright, who had essentially been a candidate by default before he produced two of the strongest starts of his young career over the past eight days. Wright earned his first career win with six strong innings at Nationals Park last weekend.

Atlanta Braves Clippings Monday, June 29, 2020 Braves.com Braves set player pool; 4 spots remain By Mark Bowman ATLANTA -- Less than three weeks after being drafted, Jared Shuster was placed in the 60-man player pool the Braves submitted to Major League Baseball on Sunday afternoon. Shuster is not expected to make his MLB debut this year. But his inclusion on this list creates the opportunity for him to spend the next couple of months working out with some of the top members of the Braves’ development staff. First and foremost, these 60-man player pools were designed for teams to designate which members of their organization will be eligible for the 60-game regular season, which is slated to begin on July 23 or 24. But with a Minor League season this year seeming unlikely, teams also chose to fill some of these spots with their top prospects. The Braves’ pool actually includes each of their top 12 prospects (per MLB Pipeline’s rankings). But only two or three of those prospects has a shot of being added to Atlanta’s active roster at some point this year. The members of this prospect group who could be used by Atlanta this year include outfielders Cristian Pache and Drew Waters, right-handers Ian Anderson, Kyle Wright, Bryse Wilson, Jasseel De La Cruz and Huascar Ynoa, and left-handers Kyle Muller and Tucker Davidson. Shuster, a left-handed pitcher taken in this year's Draft with the 25th overall pick out of Wake Forest, is part of the group of prospects added to this list just to get some experience this year.

  • Weekly Notes 072817
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).
