Pupils will explore aspects of the River Tamar from source to where it meets the sea and develop their understanding of habitats, water quality, uses of the river, the water cycle and food chains. The project will take place during a two week period beginning Monday 13th June and involve a variety of off site visits and field studies, providing pupils with an exciting and unique opportunity to explore practical scientific techniques while working with related professionals. The project has been developed in partnership with the Westcountry Rivers Trust. Please be aware of the following off site visits and requirements: Monday 13th June – Davidstow & Crowdy Reservoir Visit to Davidstow to seek out the source of the River Inny, along with a visit to Crowdy Reservoir where pupils will meet Nigel Tomkinson, the SW Lakes Trust warden for the area who will talk about conservation/land management at Crowdy and then Jack McCarey from South West Water who will talk about the water supply/dam. Please Note: Pupils selected to attend the Bodmin Swimming Gala will not be able to attend but we will provide an additional opportunity for them to visit the source at a later date. This is a morning trip, with the coach leaving school at 9.30am and returning in time for lunch. Your child will be expected to wear school uniform, but please ensure they have appropriate, comfortable footwear, such as trainers and a waterproof coat/sun hat and sunscreen if necessary, as well as a drink and snack. th Thursday 16 June – Trebartha Hydro Plant (& River Lynher Field Study 4 pupils) Visit to the Trebartha Estate to view the hydro electric plant from where the water is channeled into the pipeline on the moor and then consider the plant room and factors involved in producing electricity. Pupils need to be transported to the Trebartha Estate for 9am, however if this is inconvenient, please notify Mrs Statton and transport will be provided. There will be a member of staff at the crossroads in Trebartha to direct you. Pupils should wear non-school uniform, including a sun hat/sunscreen and footwear suitable for walking up onto the moor. They will also need to bring with them a drink and snack. The pupils will return to school in time for lunch via mini bus and staff cars. ‘Hit the Surf’ pupils will need a packed lunch to eat prior to their visit to Crooklets beach. Any additional bags/equipment for ‘Hit the Surf’ will be safely stored during the Trebartha visit. The following pupils: Edie, Tula, Maeve and Nicola will be remaining on the Estate with Mr Waters and Caroline Latham to undertake a field study of the River Lynher. It would be useful if these pupils had shorts and shoes suitable for walking in the river and getting wet. They will also require a towel. Please provide a packed lunch and drink. Please note these pupils will be taken back to school by the school staff. Monday 20th June – Penpont Water & River Inny Field Study Please bring your child to school as normal. Following registration, pupils will be transported to the Blackhill Quarry - Polyphant drop off, put in groups and will be undertaking their field studies. Pupils will need to wear shorts, sun hat/sunscreen and shoes suitable for walking in the river and getting wet, as well as a towel. Please provide a snack and a drink. Friday 24th June – Cotehele to Weir Quay Canoe Trip The final visit of the project will be a canoe trip for the entire class from Cotehele to Weir Quay, where the pupils will consider tidal impact on the river. The coach will be leaving promptly at 9.15am. Pupils will need to wear clothing suitable for canoeing such as shorts, t-shirt and trainers/crocs/wetsuit shoes and bring a hat, sunscreen, small towel, drink and packed lunch. Please be aware of the weather and supply a light waterproof coat or sweatshirt if required. Pupils will return to school in time for normal collection at 3.15pm. As you can imagine, we are extremely excited to be able to provide this opportunity and are grateful for your continued support. Please do not hesitate to contact either Mr Towe or Mrs Kilpin should you require any further information. Please complete the attached consent form for the project to enable your child to attend and experience all of the opportunities. Yours sincerely Donna Kilpin .
