WOODBURY Royals crowned state champs John Horner 0 Xavier Cole 1 BUFFALO — Finishing the season with wins in both the MSF (6A) Dylan Bruehl 4 and MYAS (6AAAAA) was great for our team. It did not take long to realize the team was going to Nick Blonski 12 do well as they won their first two tournaments. Caleb Blodgett 14 Alex Johnson 22 We quickly tried to move up to ‘A’ in as many tournaments as possible, but many could not accommodate. The Luke Hauswirth 23 boys worked extremely hard on defense and team play. Our first ‘A’ tournament was Shakopee where we faced Alex Tostenrud 25 Prior Lake. Despite a great effort, we lost by a point and then followed it up with another loss in the afternoon. Losing rarely feels very good, but it was good for this team. Turned out it was our last loss of the season.

The greatest highlight of the season came in our first game at the MSF tournament against Shakopee in 6A. We could not buy a bas- ket and trailed by 13 points in the first half, but the boys did not give up. The defensive intensity reached new heights and Caleb made three successive 3 pt shots. The lead was gone with about 1 minute left when our weakest shooter was fouled. Nick calmly made both to give us a two point lead. Shakopee tied the score, giving us the ball with about 15 seconds left. Time out! Discipline and teamwork paid off as the boys ran the designed play perfectly and Lucas scored as time expired!

We had a lot of fun coaching the kids and had a very supportive, engaged group of parents. The end of year party was great: limo to NBA City for dinner and games!

Only Jake Berg 31 three boys were back from last year’s A/B team so there Ramsey Bordeaux 30 was a lot of teaching and chemistry building to accomplish. Kent Chamberlain 42 Sam Newton 43 Half way through the season after the basic offensive system in place, the boys were going to focus primarily Ben Kirby 20 on defense since, as the tried and true saying goes, “Defense wins championships.” The boys understood Clayton Byrd 53 that concept and also learned that a good defense dictates to instead of reacts to the other team’s offense. Assistant Coach: Coaches reinforced the need to learn how to play man to man defense at this age and thus only played a Andy Moldenhauer zone defense in two games all year. Including state championship games, the boys went on a14-1 run at the end of the season. The MSF tournament was such a special way to end the season since the competition was fierce with the last three wins coming by one, three, and two points. After going 1-2 in last year’s MSF tournament, it was absolutely exciting for the boys to go 5-0 this year. This was a weekend that these boys will never forget. They will always be able to say that they are the state champions of 2008!

BURNSVILLE Burnsville claims state title Chase Roullier 42 SAINT PAUL — At the time of seeding, my team record was 13- Dan Motl 24 13. The team had a complete turn around from that point. The Tony Kuplic 53 only team we lost to was Andover who played in Division AA for Ryan Swanson 31 the MSF. Before that game, I had made an argument that we Matt Stemper 25 should be playing in a lower division. They started doing all the little things to win games. Focus was on defense Bo Hellquist 15 and rebounding which led to winning games. Ben Strand 35 Logan Kent 45 After playing in the Roseville tournament I knew we could be a force in the A Division. We exploded right out the AJ Coleman 34 gates by winning our first. We ran a unique defense called the triangle and two. After the team played that first Zachary Maxon 5 game, they had a new confidence about themselves. Each game made us stronger and stronger. The best chal- lenge that we faced was the team from Duluth East. They had the most talented and dominating player in our division. We could not stop him from rebounding or scoring. By the end of the game we were close after being down as much as 14 points. Once we tied the game, I knew it was our game to win. The trap defense did not allow them to get any good looks in the last 3 possessions. They were forced to foul us. We had been shooting 57% from the free throw line as a team for the entire season. We made 3 out of the 4 free throw attempts. Duluth East was the toughest team that we faced in the tournament.

The interesting and funny thing about the state tournament is that in the first game we had around 7 parents watching. By the champion- ship game against Irondale we had half of the bleachers filled with supporters. Everyone there had realized how far we came as a team. We exploded against Irondale in the first half and went up by as many as 30 points at one point. The problem was that the team felt like we had already won the game with a entire half to play. Irondale made a valiant run, but had to spend too much energy to get back into the game. If we would have played all tournaments how we played this state tournament, we would have been playing in the AA Division.

Seventy-Seven Teams, Seven State Champions, Two Days Weather threatened to delay the 2008 MSF Youth Volleyball State Championship on Saturday morning, but all 37 teams showed up despite the winter conditions. The National Volleyball Complex in Rochester, MN is one of the best, if not the best, volleyball facilities in the state. It is solely dedicated to playing volleyball and it is al- ways busy. It contains eight pristine courts all with lower bleachers and upper-level seating. Thank you to the Rochester Sports Commission for the use of this facility!

Rochester attracts many southern communities and junior olympic teams and being that it is the best facility, there is always a good turn-out. Games started at 8:00AM on Saturday for the 12-Unders, 13-Unders and 14-Unders. With 14 teams in the 12-Under pool, they were broken up into three pools with the Sizzlers 11 and Sizzlers 12 of St. Charles and Fire Volleyball Club from Chanhassen all taking the #1 seeds. In the final game of the Sizzlers 12 and Wabasha Kellogg (seeded #2), the Sizzlers 12 came out as the champion in two games, 25-14, 25-18.

The 13-Under consisted of 10 teams split up into two pools of five. Blue Earth and the Sizzlers 1 were seeded at #1 against the New Ulm Aces White and Hayfield. May 3rd and 4th wrapped up the fourth MSF youth volleyball state tournament. Becker High School and Field House hosted 47 teams in 12-Under through 17-Under divisions. Thank you to the Becker Fastpitch Association and the Becker Volleyball Association for hosting the event and to all the officials that dedicated their time to make the tournament happen.

In the 12-Under division Fire Volleyball Club went 5-0 in pool play and faced Melrose in the championship game. FVC won in two games, 25-22, 25-17. Avon, Northrup Sparks and Osakis also participated in the 12-U division. In the 13-Under division Sauk Centre went to finals where they met Melrose. Sauk Centre de- feated the Smash, 25-14, 25-12. Pelican Rapids Vikings took home the consolation champ medals. New Ulm, Fairmont and Northrup also participated.

The 14-Under division had 11 teams. Including Wadena Deer Creek who won their pool and High Voltage I of Mayer who won their respective pool making them the top teams. Wadena fought back the second game and made a run to win 25-16. In the third and final game Wadena looked like they gained control, but High Voltage pulled out the victory 16-14. These two teams played high-caliber volleyball! Congratulations to both on a great day of play. Melrose defeated High Voltage III in the consolation series. Cromwell, Osakis and New Ulm also represented the 14-Under division.

A huge congratulations to the Lady Tigers of Fridley that won all four MSF volleyball tournaments in the 15-Under division! They are a talented squad and have played well all spring. Nationals hits Fargo in record style By Kevin Denesen, USA Broomball President

USA Broomball's 10th Annual National Championships were held in Fargo, on March 28-30. Thirty-nine teams from six dif- ferent states made the journey and displayed some phenomenal broomball to its fans. This was definitely the year for upsets and fetes.

pulled an amazing victory over Minnesota's heavily favored Two3 team for the Class D Men's Championship.

• Miami of also pulled off a big league victory over de- fending champions, Bethel Royals, in the collegiate division.

• Kelly Lake did not disappoint either. This team came out of nowhere and immediately humbled the high-riding Class C Minnesota State Champions, GL Sports in the first round of pool play. Kelly Lake went on to win the Class C Men's Na- tional Championship.

• Geez continued their success from Minnesota B State to win the National Men's Class B division. They will truly give teams a run for their money next season in the Men's A divi- sion.

• Voodoo stunned quite a few co-rec teams to become the 2008 Co-Rec Champions. Made up of six players from the inaugural co-rec champion team of the Kamikazes, some seasoned veterans and rookies alike, this team played well through the tough games to win it all against Superior Ma- chine.

• The Smart Mortgage Blues, arguably the most dominating team in recent memory closed a magnificent run the broom- ball world might not ever see again. They dominated the North American Champions, Inferno, 4-0 in the Men's Class A National Championship game. Truly a wonderful end for that team. They won the first ever USA Nationals and closed out a championship on the 10th anniversary.

Look for another exciting Nationals as the prestigious tournament comes to broomball's hometown of Richfield, Minnesota in 2009. Winter/Spring Minnesota Amateur 30 Men’s Basketball State Championships

April 30, 2008, Cambridge, Minn. - In stark contrast to the stalled retail expansion news in other parts of Minnesota, the City of Cambridge closed a triple commercial development deal today with Lowe's, Kohl's and commercial developer Opus Northwest. The deal, worth $6.98 million, also in- cludes a major recreational complex.

"This represents the largest retail development project in Cambridge in nearly a decade," says Community Development Director Dave Carlberg, who orchestrated the deal.

Land Swap Paves Way for Dual-Track Development The agreement was two years in the making and completes a multi-phase parkland conversion process begun in 2001. The City began by convert- ing 40 acres of parkland in its east-side commercial district into retail space. It also bought 155 acres of farmland on the northeast side of town from the Sandquist family, designating it as parkland.

This morning, City officials conveyed the rezoned commercial property to three entities -- Opus Northwest, Lowe's building center, and Kohl's de- partment store - during a private closing in downtown Minneapolis. This afternoon, they finalized the $3.75 million farmland purchase in Cambridge with representatives of the Sandquist family.

Opus Northwest plans to begin construction on the Lowe's and Kohl's sites in September 2008. The city will begin transforming the farmland into a regional recreational complex, to be named "Sandquist Family Park," in early June.

Deal Fortifies Cambridge's Role as Regional Shopping Hub "Lowe's and Kohl's decision recognizes Cambridge's strategic location as a retail shopping hub in the northern suburban metro area," says Jim McComb, president of The McComb Group, the real estate and retail consulting firm that authored Cambridge's retail market analysis in 2005. He notes that neither company seemed to be concerned with slowing residential growth in Cambridge, which mirrors the growth patterns in the metro area, as they made their decision. "That speaks volumes," he says.

"As national big box retailers contend with increasingly challenging market conditions, it is a strong endorsement that they continue to invest in Cambridge," observes Kim Erickson, president of Cambridge State Bank and a long-time proponent of local economic development efforts.

"Those challenges include high gas prices, a national housing slump, and burdensome levels of debt, according to a Retail Market Trends Report by Grubb & Ellis Research. It reported that new retail construction in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul region has slowed significantly, with a few isolated exceptions, and that "growth will move at a more controlled pace over the next few years."

"Cambridge is one of the happy exceptions to the rule," says Carlberg. "The two new stores round out our retail offerings, building a critical mass for Cambridge as a retail hub."

"We are very excited to bring this new shopping center to Cambridge," says John Gelderman, senior director of development at Opus Northwest. "This area already has a vibrant retail base, so we are expecting a lot of interest from both retailers and consumers when we add our Kohl's/ Lowe's- anchored development to the mix." (See Attached Site Plan)

Kohl's and Lowe's join the retail district just east of downtown Cambridge, anchored by Wal-Mart, Menards, Target, Cub and Office Max. Several stores rank among the highest volume locations in the state.

Region Benefits from Retail and Recreation Investment "After the McComb study was completed, we realized that Cambridge had much greater retail potential than we thought," says Carlberg. "We looked at how we could make more land available on the east side and create a link between the east side and our historic downtown. We were able to relocate the athletic complex further to the north, which opened up land and will bring additional traffic through the east side retail area."

"This project benefits the entire region," says Cambridge City Administrator Linda Woulfe. "It enables the city to meet the specific space require- ments of Lowe's and Kohl's, which wanted to be in our high-traffic commercial district. It broadens the retail offerings for residents in Cambridge's 17-community trade area. And it allows us to almost quadruple the size of our recreational facilities."

Stan Gustafson, Cambridge's new economic development director and a recent transplant from Faribault, has a unique appreciation for the magni- tude of this news. "This is huge. Compared to what's happening in other communities around the state, including larger ones, this is a very sizable addition to the asset base of Cambridge and the surrounding communities."

Recreation Center Creates Economic Impact Perry Coonce, executive director of the Minnesota Sports Federation, is enthusiastic about the new regional recreational complex, which features four high-end ball fields for softball, baseball, soccer and football. "Not unlike the National Sports Center in Blaine, Sandquist Family Park will have the capacity to generate substantial economic impact in the form of amateur sporting events and national tournaments. It could be a destination for the entire five-state region," Coonce predicts.
