A. J. Casson’s friendship with Franklin Carmichael, an original member of the , proved to be the catalyst of C'Casson's career. AkdtAsked to b ecome a member of the Group in 1926 to replace Frank Johnston who had resigned, Casson went on to become known as a painter of , as was Carmichael. He was able to document many of our rural settings and buildings, as well as his great study of the Ontario landscape with all of the riches that are found in his interpretive of sharply defined colour and shape and contrast. Alfred Joseph Casson, born in Toronto, began to study art with J.S. Gordon at Hamilton Technical School and was apprenticed to a lithographer. Returned to WHITE PINE Toronto in 1916 and studied with Harry #AJC-29 Britton at the Ontario College of Art; also at the Central Technical School. His paintings hang in every important private, corporate and public collection across our land, including the National Gallery of Canada. He died in Toronto at the age of 94.

Emily Carr, painter, writer (born at Victoria 13 Dec 1871; died at Victoria 2 Mar 1945). Along with Tom Thomson, the Group of Seven, and David Milne, Emily Carr was one of the pre-eminent, and perhaps most origg, inal, Canadian p ainters of the first half of the twentieth century; she was also one of the only major female artists in either North America or Europe of that period. In Carr’s mature paintings, nature is a furious vortex of organic growth depicted with curving shapes that create the impression of constant movement and transformation. By comparison, the human element – churches, houses, totem poles – seem small and fragile.

Frank (Franz) Johnston was born in Toronto and like many other Group members, he joined Grip Ltd. as a commercial artist. He studied in Germany from 1904 to 1907. Although his official association with the Group of Seven was brief, his friendship with with the artists dated back over a much longer period. In 1910, he left for the United States where he studied art in Philadelphia and worked in commercial design in New York. Although an original member of the Group, Johnston's association was brief.

BERRY PATCH SHADOWED VALLEY A BEND IN THE RIVER #FJ-01 #FJ-02 #FJ-03 ARTHUR LISMER Arthur Lismer's immense contribution to is twofold: as a painter and as an influential and dedicated art educator. A man of tireless energy, his active career took him throughout Canada and around the world. He saw art as a universal form of expression, profoundly rewarding for all who took the time to enjoy it. Born in Sheffield, , and apprenticed at thirteen to a photo-engraving firm, Lismer spent the next seven years producing black and white art for the local newspaper while studying at the Sheffield School of Art. Further courses at Antwerp's Academie des Beaux Arts, combined with trips to and Paris,,g gave the y oung student a thorough backg round in both art history and in the traditions of the day. Struggling as a commercial artist, he soon headed to Canada where he joined the design house of Grip Ltd. in 1911 where he met artists Frank Johnston, J.E.H. MacDonald and Tom Thomson. He was one of four employees , who later formed the Group of seven, to leave work for Rous and Mann printing house in 1912.

J.E.H. MacDonald together with Lawren Harris constituted the driving force and inspiration in the formation of The Group of Seven. They held similar strong beliefs in the direction and ideals of art in Canada, and MacDonald often found himself spokesman for the new artistic movement. WhWhileile The Group of Seven was considered to be radical for its time, at age forty-seven when The Group formed, MacDonald could hardly be referred to as a "young radical". Born in England, MacDonald emigrated to Canada as a teenager with his family and studied art in Hamilton. The oldest member of The Group of Seven, he began work at the Toronto firm of Grip Ltd. MacDonald became Grip's art director and today is well known for his superlative commercial design work. He supervised the work of fellow artists Frank Johnston, Tom Thomson, Arthur Lismer and Franklin Carmichael.

He made his first trip to Algonquin Park in in 1912. This region provided him with major themes, expressed in his most famous work, , in which humanity’s struggle with nature is symbolized by a lone pine bent fiercely against a gale. His wilderness subjects had great influence on later Canadian landscape artists, especially The Group of Seven. Although his career was cut short by his tragic drowning in1917, he has since become a legendary figure in Canadian painting.

Although he was one of the landscape artists known as the Group of Seven, for mmanyany years Varley devoted himself primarily to portraiture. His expressive portraits have been favourably compared with those of English painter Augustus John. In 1926, Varley moved to . There he painted richly coloured lands-capes whose calm spirituality reflected his interest in Eastern philosophy.
