Archer Public Service Award The Detroit Bar Association Foundation has honored U.S. District Judge Avern Cohn with its 2020 Dennis W. Archer Public Service Award. The award, presented Friday, Nov. 19, during a Zoom video gala, recognizes a lawyer or judge who exemplifies the ideal of the law as public service. The foundation has presented the award since 2003 to Michigan lawyers and judges who have dedicated their careers to the betterment of the profession and the community. Previous recipients include the late U.S. Appeals Judge Damon Keith (2007), former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm (2010), Chief U.S. District Judge Denise Page Hood (2019), retired Chief U.S. District Judge Gerald Rosen (2015), and U.S. District Judge Victoria Roberts (2012). The award was presented by Archer, Hood, retired Chief Wayne County Circuit Judge Robert Colombo Jr., U.S. District Judges Nancy Edmunds and Bernard Friedman, Detroit attorney Eugene Driker and former law clerks Andrew Doctoroff and Kimberly Altman. Altman now is a federal magistrate judge in Detroit. Andrew Humphrey, WDIV meteorologist and reporter, emceed the event. Archer and Colombo received the award in 2003 and 2018, respectively. Judge Cohn was born in 1924 to Irwin I. and Sadie Levin Cohn. He attended the University of Michigan, John Tarleton Agricultural College, Stanford University, and Loyola School of Medicine. After serving in the U.S. Army, he earned his law degree from the University of Michigan Law School and was admitted to the Michigan State Bar in December 1949.

Court Information The Eastern District of Michigan is one of two federal district courts in the great State of Michigan. Our district is part of the Sixth Circuit, which is comprised of districts in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee. The seat of the Sixth Circuit is located in Cincinnati, Ohio. Our district includes the eastern half of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, divided into two divisions – the Northern Division and the Southern Division. The Court’s main office is located in Detroit at the Theodore Levin United States Courthouse. Other Southern divisional offices are located in Ann Arbor, Flint and Port Huron, and Bay City in the Northern Division. The Eastern District of Michigan has 339 employees – 27 judicial officers, 79 staff working directly for judges, 92 Clerk’s Office employees, 85 Probation employees, 32 Pretrial Services employees, and 24 other court staff (court reporters and staff attorneys).     Longtime Judge Takes Senior Status By Tom Kirvan The Legal News 8-23-21 Some seven months after celebrating his 70th birthday, U.S. District Judge David Lawson recently announced that he would take senior status on the federal bench, thereby opening up a vacancy on the court in the Eastern District of Michigan. The decision, which took effect August 6, will allow Lawson to handle a reduced caseload on the federal court that he has served since 2000, although he indicated this week that he plans to maintain his current full-time schedule and docket. Lawson was nominated to the bench in August 1999 by President William C. Clinton, an appointment that was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate in May 2000. Lawson, who spent more than 24 years in private practice before becoming a judge, made his decision official in a one paragraph letter on July 23 to President Joseph R. Biden, highlighted by the closing sentence, “It is my intention to continue to render substantial judicial service as a senior judge.” In an e-mail to The Legal News, Judge Lawson downplayed the move, calling it, “no big deal, as I will continue to punch in at the same office for years to come, I hope.” Such brevity – and clarity – have been trademarks of Lawson throughout his legal career, which began with clerkships in the Oakland County Circuit Court for Judge John O’Brien and then for Justice James Ryan of the Michigan Supreme Court. Over the course of his career in private practice, Lawson handled 23 first degree murder cases and more than 300 state and federal appeals.
