The Daily Princetonian Long time Obama aide and long time writer of classmate news: Chris Lu '88 By Jacob Donnelly • Staff Writer • April 20, 2014 On April 5, 1988, at 2:27 a.m., Christopher P. Lu ’88 put the finishing touches on his senior thesis, wrapping up the cover letter to his cheekily-titled research project, “The Morning After: Press Coverage of Presidential Primaries 1972–1984.” The subject of birth was evidently preoccupying him at the time. “In many ways, writing a senior thesis is like having a baby,” he wrote. “The idea for the paper is conceived one day unexpectedly and then gestates inside one’s head for nine months … I now submit this thesis like a proud father, confident that it will stand on its own two feet as a piece of scholarly research.” However, Lu, this year’s Baccalaureate speaker who is a former White House Cabinet Secretary and the current Deputy Secretary of the Department of Labor, had no idea then that his forays into politics and government, rather than over, were only in their embryonic stage. He would remain attached to Princeton as well, serving on the board of trustees of The Daily Princetonian, helping the University’s trustees navigate Washington and diligently keeping up with classmates in order to feature them in the pages of the Princeton Alumni Weekly. “We weren’t totally uncool:” At Princeton Jane Martin ’89, a former sports editor for the ‘Prince,’ remembers Lu as a senior news editor for the ‘Prince,’ a fellow member of Cloister Inn and a good friend. -

Carmi, Illinois—a town on the Little Wabash River, down in the southern tip of the state, twenty-five miles from Kentucky, population about fifty-five hundred. A group of twelve farmers—burly white men with ruddy complexions and very short hair—sitting around a rectangle of pushed-together tables in a nondescript room, talking with their junior senator, Barack Obama. It was long before Obama decided to run for President, and he wasn’t in a rush. He sat at one end of the tables, leaning back in his chair, his knee propped against the table edge. He wore a tie but had removed his jacket and rolled up his shirtsleeves. A young farmer complained about the Jones Act, a 1920 law that he felt was partly responsible for a detrimental consolidation in the barge market. Another farmer had a question about ethanol. “My question first arose in my mind during the State of the Union address,” the farmer said. “President Bush said I’m all for biofuels, and then he started talking about switchgrass. And I’m, like, now wait a minute, we’ve got a system where we can make ethanol out of corn. I guess cellulosic ethanol”—which can be made from switchgrass—“is more efficient. But we don’t know how to do it, and we don’t know if farmers are ever going to grow switchgrass, and we don’t know if we would even want to grow switchgrass, so why so much emphasis on cellulosic ethanol?” “Well, I’m not a scientist,” Obama said, in a leisurely way, “so I gotta be careful when I start getting into this stuff that I don’t wade too deep and then can’t get back to shore. -

He knew what he wanted to do: get his law degree and learn as much as he possibly could and take that experience back to Chicago and work in the same communities that he had worked as an organizer. He was a very calm presence and someone who had a very good sense of himself, where he fit in, and what he wanted to do with his life. -

Established in 1999 to provide information to incoming White House staff members so that they can hit the ground running, The White House Transition Project includes a group of presidency scholars from across the country who participate in writing essays about past transitions and the inner workings of key White House offices. How is the Federal Government Organized with Respect to Influencing Child Hunger? Edward M Cooney Executive Director Congressional Hunger Center April 13, 2011 The Congressional Hunger Center gratefully acknowledges the generous support of the ConAgra Foods Foundation for The CHILD Project (Children’s Hunger Initiative on Learning and Development) for which this paper was prepared. Introduction and Background What is the Role of Government in Addressing Child Hunger? Hubert Humphrey once said: “the moral test of government is how it treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; and those who are in the shadows of life, the sick, disabled and the handicapped”. This viewpoint captures how Congress and the Executive Branch of government (with a few notable exceptions) have viewed their role in addressing child hunger through the latter part of the 20th and early 21st century. America has a rich and bipartisan tradition of addressing the needs of its poor and hungry people. Perhaps President Nixon captured the essence of the paradox of hunger existing in a nation of great wealth and compassion when he said: “We don’t know just how many Americans are actually hungry and how many suffer from malnutrition, who eats enough and who doesn’t eat the right things. But we know that there are too many Americans in both categories. We can argue the extent of hunger. But hunger exists. We can argue its severity, but malnutrition exists! The plain fact is that a great many Americans are not eating well enough to sustain health” (1969 White House Conference on Food, Nutrition, and Health).
