BOSWELL, A REPRESENTATIVE IN CONGRESS FROM IOWA The CHAIRMAN. Our hearing will come to order. I would like to thank everyone for joining us here today as we take a thorough re- view of proposals to establish exchanges to trade movie futures. I would like to give a special thanks to our witnesses for testifying before the Committee and offering their insight. The hearing today explores a novel, new product being consid- ered for trading on a futures exchange regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. This product is movie futures or box office derivatives. When the Commodity Exchange Act was first passed in the 1930s, it was very unlikely that the Congress envi- sioned such a product would be regulated by the Act. Even with subsequent amendments to the CEA, I doubt those here today fore- saw the development of this type of exchange. Nevertheless, two applicants have developed proposals to establish these box office exchanges and are seeking approval of contracts that would be of- fered there. I am pleased that both applicants are here today to discuss the products in more detail and, hopefully, answer some of the con- cerns that have been raised about the nature of the marketing of these products. We look forward to hearing from our witness today on why this may or may not be the case. The CFTC has approved the application to establish these ex- changes, but the contract applications are still pending. This hear- ing is especially timely, given the current state of financial regu- latory affairs and the actions going on in the Senate that we under- stand would establish in statute a prohibition of such exchanges. He is a PhD supervisor, a film festival jury member, and an enthusiast of digital filmmaking with award- winning short films. Let me give you a little history as to who I am and what I do. I was a stockbroker on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange for 13 years and as such I understand the volatility associated with trading stocks and other financial instruments. I currently serve as box office analyst and film reviewer for the site. One of the main arguments presented by the MPAA in opposition to trading box office receipts is that box office futures would begin to negatively impact the actual box office receipts of their underlying films due to possible negative buzz associated with the price of a contract. This is a complete falsehood and in fact the opposite is true. If anything, a box office futures exchange will increase interest and public appetite for films. If you look at any newsstand, you’ll see that most of the magazines on the rack cater to our obsession with movies, TV and celebrities. There are numerous websites and televisions shows that also cater to this obsession. All of these spread both negative and positive buzz about films from the second a project is announced to the time it is actually playing in theatres nationwide. Critics review films every week and even their esteemed opinions don’t have any overall effect on the box office.

Bibek Debroy∗ Culture is difficult to define. This is more so in a large and heterogeneous country like India, where there is no common language and religion. There are sub-cultures within the country. Joseph Nye’s ‘soft power’ expression draws on a country’s cross-border cultural influences and is one enunciated with the American context in mind. Almost tautologically, soft power implies the existence of a relatively large country and the term is, therefore, now also being used for China and India. In the Indian case, most instances of practice of soft power are linked to language and literature (including Indians writing in English), music, dance, cuisine, fashion, entertainment and even sport, and there is no denying that this kind of cross-border influence has been increasing over time, with some trigger provided by the diaspora. The film and television industry’s influence is no less important. In the last few years, India has produced the largest number of feature films in the world, with 1,164 films produced in 2007. The United States came second with 453, Japan third with 407 and China fourth with 402. Ticket sales are higher for Bollywood than for Hollywood, though revenue figures are much higher for the latter. Indian film production is usually equated with Hindi-language Bollywood, often described as the largest film-producing centre in the world.

Broman, Advisor In their book Ten Little Title Tunes: Towards a Musicology of the Mass Media, Philip Tagg and Bob Clarida build on Tagg’s previous efforts to define the musical affect of popular music. By breaking down a musical example into minimal units of musical meaning (called musemes), and comparing those units to other musical examples possessing sociomusical connotations, Tagg demonstrated a transfer of musical affect from the music possessing sociomusical connotations to the object of analysis. While Tagg’s studies have focused mostly on television music, this document expands his techniques in an attempt to analyze the musical affect of Howard Shore’s score to Peter Jackson’s film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. This thesis studies the ability of Shore’s film score not only to accompany the events occurring on-screen, but also to provide the audience with cultural and emotional information pertinent to character and story development. After a brief discussion of J.R.R. Tolkien’s description of the cultures, poetry, and music traits of the inhabitants found in Middle-earth, this document dissects the thematic material of Shore’s film score.

Congressmen Mike McIntyre, Larry Kissell and Heath Shuler -- the three North Carolina Democrats who voted against the House-passed health reform bill back in November -- represent districts with uninsured rates among the top five in the state. For more information, please contact [email protected]. 1 Claremont McKenna College Why Hollywood Isn’t As Liberal As We Think And Why It Matters Submitted to Professor Jon Shields by Amanda Daily for Senior Thesis Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 April 29, 2019 2 3 Abstract Hollywood has long had a reputation as a liberal institution. Especially in 2019, it is viewed as a highly polarized sector of society sometimes hostile to those on the right side of the aisle. But just because the majority of those who work in Hollywood are liberal, that doesn’t necessarily mean our entertainment follows suit. I argue in my thesis that entertainment in Hollywood is far less partisan than people think it is and moreover, that our entertainment represents plenty of conservative themes and ideas. In doing so, I look at a combination of markets and artistic demands that restrain the politics of those in the entertainment industry and even create space for more conservative productions. Although normally art and markets are thought to be in tension with one another, in this case, they conspire to make our entertainment less one-sided politically.
