"But it's time for me to do it. I just hope that everybody Ithat comes to the sale and buys these horses can enjoy them ten percent as much as I've enjoyed raising them." Moore grew up in Bryan, Tex., the son of Floyd J. Moore, who owned and operated livestock auction companies in east central Texas. By the time Floyd was 14, he was auctioning cattle sales, and by 1954, when he was 20 and married to Maryann, he was working fi ve and six auctions a week. In 1956, he started his own business, buying into established auctions and operating cattle sales. "I always loved a good horse, but my daddy would never buy me one," said Moore. "He thought a horse was just a horse. But I told him if I ever got enough money of my own, I was going to buy myself a good horse." Moore fulfi lled his promise with Tony, a 15-year-old roping horse. "I gave $2,500 for him in 1950 and got to going to calf ropings and winning on him," he said. "That horse taught me the difference between just a horse and a good horse and ever since that day, I've always tried to own a good horse." The cattle business afforded Moore an introduction to the sport of cutting, when he began supplying the National Cutting Horse Association with cattle for their major shows. At about the same time, he purchased a ranch in Huntsville and hooked up with trainer Kenny Patterson, who lived in Madisonville. It was Patterson who found a two-year-old Paint colt named Delta Flyer for Moore, in 1984. "Kenny told me that he had showed his mother and she was the best horse he'd ever rode," said Moore, who paid country music star Lynn Anderson $80,000 for the Peppy San Badger son out of Delta, the only Paint mare ever named to the NCHA Hall of Fame. Delta had been 1973 NCHA Open reserve champion and also won the 1974 NCHA World Finals under Bobby Brown, and Patterson rode her to place fi fth in the 1977 NCHA World standings. Delta Flyer and Kenny Patterson dazzled the cutting world in the spring of 1986 with a 220.5-point win in the NCHA Super Stakes over Tom Lyons with 218.5 points on Miss Silver Pistol, the 1985 NCHA Non-Pro Futurity champion. With the $170,000 win, Delta Flyer became the fi rst Paint Horse to ever win a major NCHA limited age event. In 1987, he would place in four more events and retire to stud with NCHA career earnings of $211,359. Moore's future as a breeder of outstanding Paint performance horses was already ensured in 1985, when he purchased Delta Flyer's 22-year-old dam, in foal to Doc O'Lena, for IInside_upfront-1.inddnside_upfront-1.indd 4 110/30/20130/30/2013 55:14:23:14:23 PPMM $50,000. The foal would be a colt named Delta Olena, who would earn 145 points in seven events and become the only APHA World Champion to sire a two-times APHA World Champion in reining (Gay Bar O Lena). "That started the deal," said Moore of the birth of Delta Olena. "I already had Delta Flyer and Delta Olena was a stud colt, but I didn't have any broodmares. And when I took Delta back to be bred to Doc O'Lena, I got another colt, Delta Getsya There." Moore asked Kenny Patterson for his help in putting together a broodmare band, and in the meantime purchased 20 well-bred Nu Bar daughters from Bob Waltrip, who along with two partners had reputedly paid $1 million for Nu Bar. Moore had been furnishing Waltrip with cutting cattle for his ranch near Anderson, Tex., when Waltrip asked him if he would be interested in the mares as a package. "I told him that they would probably be too rich for my blood, but he told me to go look at them and tell him what I'd give for them," Moore recalled."So I bid him all I had to bid, which was $2,000 a piece, and told him he was probably going to be mad at me. But he said, 'No, I'm just going to sell them to you. When can you come and pick them up?" Eight mares purchased as a lot from J.W. McFarlane and Helen Groves for $110,000 completed the Moore Ranch broodmare band, which by now included daughters of Peppy San Badger, Doc O'Lena, Doc's Hickory, Doc Quixote, Gay Bar King, Colonel Freckles, and, Mr San Peppy. "With those I had 35 to 40 mares and I started from that and just kept breeding to the best studs and my Paint horses all the way," said Moore. "I think I produced one of the best sets of Paint Horses in the world." It was a wider world than just the APHA or NCHA world that sought out Moore Paint Horses. Over the years, Floyd and Maryann have sold horses to owners in South America, Central America, Europe, and Canada, as well as across the US. Moore-bred horses have earned championships in nearly every performance discipline, including cutting, reining, calf roping, heading, steer stopping, working cow horse and barrel racing. "I never have enjoyed anything in my life as I have these good horses and the people that we have met from all over the world. I've just had a ball. But I've worked long days and short nights. I'll be eighty on my next birthday and I decided it was my time to pull up a little bit and smell the roses."
