It’s More Than A Motto It’s more than a motto - it’s a way of life. Being prepared means having the ability to deal with the many tough challenges life presents–that’s what Scouting is all about. Through its time-tested program, Scouting provides young people with opportunities to mentor to their peers, build character and enrich their faith. These activities build stronger family bonds and help youth reach their full potential by instilling values that last a lifetime. One of the strengths of the Scouting program is the unique relationship between religious and community organizations, parents, and leaders. Working together, they are able to focus the necessary resources and leadership on the single task of serving youth. The result is children, families, and communities that are stronger and better prepared for the future.

3 OUR STAFF UNIT RESOURCES

RECRUITMENT A steady flow of youth into a Scouting Unit is essential to maintaining its health. New Scouts bring energy and Jeremy Snook Development Director enthusiasm to the program and, often, new parents to help with the leadership. 719-219-2915 To ensure a quality program, Scouting units need to recruit enough boys to replace boys who Jeremy.Snook@ drop out or cross over out of the unit. Having a year-round growth plan in place will help attract Scouting.org new Scouts. The first step is to appoint a committee member to serve as the unit’s membership chair. This person will develop and implement a growth plan that incorporates all methods of recruitment, working with other Scouting units in the community, the district membership committee and the unit Commissioner. Your district can support your recruiting efforts by: • Providing flyers for distribution in schools. • Conducting school recruitment talks. • Teaching volunteers to conduct in-school recruitment talks. • Identifying Webelos eligible for a troop. • Teaching leaders how to conduct a successful “join night.” • Conducting interest surveys in local high schools for Venturing and Explorer posts. COMMISSIONERS The Commissioner is the liaison between the local council and Scouting units. The Commissioner’s mission is to keep units operating at maximum efficiency, maintain regular contact with unit leaders, coach leaders on where to find assistance, note weaknesses in programs and suggest remedies. He/She plays several roles, including friend, representative, teacher, mentor and counselor. If a Commissioner doesn’t know the answer to your question, he or she will find it and get back to you. ourY Commissioner is here to help the unit leader be successful.

The Commissioner is a friend of the unit. Of all his or her roles, this one is the most important. It springs RESOURCES from the attitude, “I care, I am here to help, what can I do for you?” Caring is the ingredient that makes Commissioner service successful. He/She is part of the District, and typically serves 1-3 units in addition to his “home” unit. Just remember that Commissioners are one of the most valuable resources available to help the units be successful!

DISTRICT COMMITTEE Scouting is volunteer-run and volunteer-funded! The Council is sub-divided into four administrative districts, each run by a volunteer-led district committee, and is responsible for the following functions: Membership – Strives for growth through the organization of new Scouting units and growth through new members joining existing units. Finance – Provides its share of funds to the total Council operating budget. Program – Concentrates on helping Scouting units with camp promotion, special activities, community service, training adult volunteers, youth advancement and recognition. Unit Service – Carried out by the District Commissioner staff, provides direct coaching and consultation by District volunteers for unit adults to help ensure the success of every Scouting unit. Each District Committee meets once a month. The purpose of the committee meetings is to build momentum, provide group continuity, ensure good coordination and to make specific assignments to committee members. Contact the District Executive for your area to serve on your District Committee. 4 YOUTH PROTECTION STANDARDS BE A SCOUT.ORG

The Boy Scouts of America places the greatest importance on creating the most secure environment possible for our youth members. To maintain such an environment, the BSA developed numerous procedural and leadership selection policies and provides parents and leaders with resources for the Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Venturing programs. Leadership Selection The Boy Scouts of America takes great pride in the quality of our adult leadership. Being a leader in the BSA is a privilege, not a right. The quality of the program and the safety of our youth members call for high-quality adult leaders. We work closely with our chartered organizations to help recruit the best possible leaders for their units. The adult application requests background information that should be checked by the unit committee or the chartered organization before accepting an applicant for unit leadership. While no current screening techniques exist that can identify every potential child molester besides doing criminal background checks, we can reduce the risk of accepting a child molester by learning all we can about an applicant for a leadership position—his or her experience with children, why he or she wants to be a , and what discipline techniques he or she would use. Currently in Effect • Youth Protection Training is required

RESOURCES for all BSA registered volunteers, regardless of their position. • New leaders are required to take Youth Protection Training before submitting an application for registration. The certificate of completion for this training must be submitted at the time the application is made and before volunteer service with youth begins. • Youth Protection Training must be taken every two years. If a volunteer’s Youth Protection training record is not current at the time of recharter, the volunteer will not be reregistered. The “Three R’s” of Youth Protection conveys a simple message to youth members: • Recognize situations that place you at risk of being molested, how child molesters operate, and that anyone could be a molester. BSA ADOPT-a-SCHOOL PROGRAM • Resist unwanted and inappropriate attention. Resistance will stop most attempts at molestation. • Report attempted or actual molestation to a parent or trusted adult. This prevents further abuse & helps to protect other children. Let the Scout know he or she will not be blamed for what occurred. Digital Privacy A key ingredient for a safe and healthy Scouting experience is the respect for privacy. Advances in technology are enabling new forms of social interaction that extend beyond the appropriate use of cameras or recording devices (see “Barriers to Abuse Within Scouting”). Sending sexually explicit photographs or videos electronically or “sexting” by cell phones is a form of texting being practiced primarily by young adults and children as young as middle-school age. Although most campers and leaders use digital devices responsibly, educating them about the appropriate use of cell phones and cameras would be a good safety and privacy measure. 5 For more information on the new Youth Protection Guidelines go to www.scouting.org/youthprotection YOUTH PROTECTION STANDARDS BE A SCOUT.ORG

PUT YOUR UNIT ON THE MAP! visit BeAScout.org As we venture further into the electronic age of communication, we must work to ensure the units in our Council are sharing the correct and most up-to-date information about the Scouting programs in our community. The use of BeAScout. org is a great opportunity for Scout units to highlight what makes each of their units unique, to express how excited they are about Scouting, and to show to prospective Scout families the benefits of Scouting through video or photos. BeAScout uses the Web and Google Maps to recruit members. Packs, troops, crews, teams and posts will appear as “pins” on Google maps nation-wide. Put your unit on the map today! How to put your unit on the map! Step 1: Login to your MyScouting.org account Step 2: Under Unit Tools you will see the BeAScout link. Step 3: Your unit number and Chartering Organization should be listed at the top under “Unit Description”. Step 4: Scroll down to where it says “Fields Displayed on Google Pin”. Everyone’s pin is defaulted to be checked under “Council Information”. Instead, click the box above labeled “Contact Person” When this is done, the items under “Primary Contact Information” and “Alternate Contact Information” are then able to be changed. Step 5: Under “Primary Contact Information” click on the drop down list for the Primary Contact Person and select the desired name. The other areas will automatically be populated. Do the same under “Alternate Contact RESOURCES Information” and select two alternate people from the drop down list. *You will not be able to save successfully without filling in all of the required areas. Step 6: You may also update the “Unit Meeting Address” information and provide a brief description of the unit. Everything that has been changed and updated will appear under the “Google Pin Preview” so that you may see what prospective families will see. Step 7: When everything has been completely filled, click the “Save” button in the lower, right hand corner. A small window will pop up confirming the saved information. BSA ADOPT-a-SCHOOL PROGRAM

WAYS TO GIVE Scouting’s founder, Lord Baden-Powell, lived by this motto: “We only have a short time to live, so we must do things that are worthwhile, and do them now.” This belief clearly influenced his vision of the organization he was to create. Few things in life are as special as making a difference in the life of a younger person, unless it’s seeing the difference that same young person can make in the community and in the lives of others. West Fellowship Award honors those who carry on his spirit of service to our young people. Membership in the James E. West Fellowship is available to individuals for gifts of $1,000 or more in cash, stocks or bonds to the Pikes Peak Council endowment fund. The gift should be in addition to, and not replace or diminish, the donor’s annual Friends of Scouting support. The principal of the gift is retained forever and the annual income is used to support the programs of the Pikes Peak Council for generations to come. Many individuals and corporations also make these gifts on behalf of someone else, such as to honor an Eagle Scout, a Scouter’s retirement, special accomplishment, anniversary or in memory of another.

If you would like to be honored in the James E. West Fellowship or know of a deserving person that you would like to recognize please contact Jeremy Snook, Council Development Director, at [email protected] or call 719-219-2915 to find out more. 22 CAMP ALEXANDER LAKE LEGACY PROJECT POPCORN FUNDRAISER

Extreme drought conditions since 2011 have caused the lake to steadily dry to its current state. With the lake's limited capacity in 2012 and complete closure for the 2013 and 2014 season, over 7,500 Scouts have already been adversely affected. Our goal is to raise the required funds to start repairs on the lake in the fall of 2014 and return the lake to its optimal level before the 2015 camp season. This will be achieved by excavating the currently dry lake, inserting an industrial lake liner and then covering it with top soil. The project, including filling the lake, will take 3 to 5 months. This objective is critical as the lake is an integral part of the camp experience for young men attending Camp Alexander. Thank you for considering an investment in this important project. MERIT BADGE SPONSORSHIP Program Offers New Ways to Support Youth The Council has developed a new Merit Badge Sponsorship Program with the dual benefits of providing additional merit badge and advancement opportunities for Scouts and also providing financial resources to support Scouting programs in the Pikes Peak Council. Independent professionals, small businesses and large corporations are all welcome and encouraged to become Merit Badge Sponsors. Benefits to Youth The Pikes Peak Council Sponsorship Program provides a financial foundation for young people to build character, learn citizenship and develop personal fitness. For over a century, the Boy Scouts of America has helped build future leaders by combining educational activities and lifelong values with fun. The Boy Scouts of America believes — and, through over 100 years of experience, knows — that helping youth is a key to building a more conscientious, responsible and productive society. When youth are involved in Scouting, they do not have as much idle time to explore drugs, alcohol or find themselves in as many peer-pressure activities. Scouting Provides Critical Elements for Healthy Youth Development • Developing strong personal values and character • Learning a positive sense of self-worth and usefulness • Creating nurturing relationships with parents, other adults and peers. • Facilitating a desire to learn • Providing a productive/creative use of time • Teaching social adeptness FUNDING Benefits to Your Business The Merit Badge Sponsorship Program offers the following marketing benefits for you or your company: PIKES PEAK COUNCIL SPONSORSHIP COMMITMENT FORM • Council Annual Report (8,000 distributions) • Resource Guide (8,000 distributions 2x a year) BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA
