MANUFACTURED METAL

PART 1 GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

A. Section includes: 1. Manufactured steel stair treads and landings. 2. Steel tube railings, , and fittings. 3. Handrails for mounting.

1.2 DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

A. Design and fabricate stair assembly to support a uniform live load of 100 lb/sq ft with following maximum deflection of stringer and landing framing: 1. Live Load Deflection: 1/360 of span. 2. Total Load Deflection: 1/240 of span.

B. Design and fabricate stair treads to support a 300 pound concentrated load at any location.

C. Fabricate stair assembly to NAAMM - Metal Stairs Manual. 1. Egress Stairs: Commercial Class.

D. Design handrail, guardrail, and attachments to resist forces as required by IBC. Apply loads non-simultaneously to produce maximum stresses. 1. Guard Top Rail and Handrail Concentrated Load: 200 pounds applied at any point in any direction. 2. Intermediate Rails, Panels, and Concentrated Load: 50 pounds applied to 1 sf area. 3. Intermediate Rails, Panels, and Baluster spaced to produce maximum 4 inch clear opening.

1.3 SUBMITTALS

A. Section 01330 - Submittal Procedures: Requirements for submittals.

B. Shop Drawings: Signed and sealed by professional engineer. 1. Indicate profiles, sizes, connection attachments, reinforcing, anchorage, size and type of fasteners, and accessories. 2. Indicate welded connections using standard AWS A2.4 welding symbols. Indicate net weld lengths.

C. Design Data: Signed and sealed by professional engineer. 1. Submit design calculations.

D. Samples: 1. Submit two handrail samples, 12 inches long.

2. Submit two samples of fittings, wall brackets, escutcheons, and end stops.

1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Perform Work in accordance with NAAMM AMP 510 - Metal Stairs Manual.

B. Perform Work in accordance with ASTM E985 - Permanent Metal Railing Systems and Rails for .

C. Accessibility Requirements: Conform to ICC A117.1.

1.5 QUALIFICATIONS

A. Manufacturer: Company specializing in manufacturing products specified in this section with minimum three years documented experience.

B. Prepare Shop Drawings under direct supervision of a professional engineer experienced in design of this work and licensed at the place where the Project is located.

C. Welders and Welding Procedures: AWS D1.1 qualified within previous 12 months.

1.6 PRE-INSTALLATION MEETING

A. Section 01300 - Administrative Requirements: Pre-installation meeting.

B. Convene minimum one week prior to commencing work of this section.

1.7 FIELD MEASUREMENTS

A. Verify field measurements prior to fabrication.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1 MANUFACTURED METAL STAIRS

A. Manufacturers: 1. American Stair, Inc. 2. The Sharon Stair Systems; Tuff-Tread. 3. Substitutions: Section 01600 - Product Requirements.

B. Treads and Landings: Factory applied non-slip, safety grit surface coasting permanently bonded to flat steel.

C. Stringers: Steel plate with side mounted prefabricated railings.

D. Rails and Posts: 1-1/2 inch outside square steel tubing; welded joints.

E. Balusters: 1/2 inch diameter steel bar.

2.2 MATERIALS

A. Steel Sections: ASTM A36/A36M.

B. Plates: ASTM A283/A283M.

C. Sheet Steel: ASTM A1011/A1011M.

D. Round Tubing: ASTM A513, Type 5, minimum 50 ksi yield strength.

E. Bolts: ASTM A325; Type 1, unfinished.

F. Nuts: ASTM A563 heavy hex type, unfinished.

G. Washers: ASTM F436; Type 1, unfinished.

H. Welding Materials: AWS D1.1 and AWS D1.3; type required for materials being welded.

I. Fittings: Elbows, T-shapes, wall brackets, escutcheons; cast steel.

J. Mounting: Adjustable brackets and flanges, with steel inserts for casting in concrete and steel brackets for embedding in masonry.

K. Exposed Fasteners: Flush countersunk screws or bolts; consistent with design of railing.

L. Splice Connectors: Steel concealed spigots.

2.3 FABRICATION

A. Fit and shop assemble components in largest practical sections, for delivery to site.

B. Fabricate components with joints tightly fitted and secured. Provide spigots and sleeves to accommodate site assembly and installation of railings.

C. Fabricate stairs and landings with closed risers and treads of sheet metal construction.

D. Form tread pans and risers with minimum 14 gage sheet steel stock.

E. Form stringers with minimum 3/16 inch thick steel plate.

F. Form landing pans with minimum 14 gage sheet stock. Reinforce underside with steel framing to attain design load requirements.

G. Factory apply non-slip grit surface to treads and landing.

H. Weld handrails to stringers.

I. Continuously seal joined stairs by continuous welds.

J. Grind exposed joints flush and smooth with adjacent finish surface. Make exposed joints butt tight, flush, and hairline. Ease exposed edges to small uniform radius.

K. Exposed Mechanical Fastenings: Flush countersunk screws or bolts; unobtrusively located; consistent with design of component, except where specifically noted otherwise.

L. Supply components required for anchorage of fabrications. Fabricate anchors and related components of same material and finish as fabrication, except where specifically noted otherwise.

M. Accurately form components required for anchorage of stairs and landings and railings to each other and to structure.

2.4 SHOP FINISHING

A. Shop prime one coat.

B. Clean surfaces of rust, scale, grease, and foreign matter prior to finishing.

C. Do not paint surfaces in direct contact with concrete or where field welding is required.

D. Shop and Touch-Up Primer: To match shop primer.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Section 01300 - Administrative Requirements: Verification of existing conditions before starting work.

B. Verify that field conditions are acceptable and are ready to receive work.

C. Verify concealed blocking and reinforcement is installed and correctly located to receive wall mounted handrails.

3.2 PREPARATION

A. Clean and strip primed steel items to bare metal where site welding is required.

B. Supply items required to be embedded in masonry with setting templates.

3.3 INSTALLATION

A. Install manufacturers metal stair system in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and complying with applicable code.

B. Install components plumb and level, accurately fitted, free from distortion or defects.

C. Provide anchors, plates, angles, hangers, and struts required for connecting stairs and railings to structure.

D. Assemble railings with spigots and sleeves to accommodate tight joints and secure installation.

E. Allow for erection loads, and for sufficient temporary bracing to maintain true alignment until completion of erection and installation of permanent attachments.

F. Field weld components indicated on shop drawings. Perform field welding in accordance with AWS D1.1.

G. Field bolt and weld to match shop bolting and welding. Conceal bolts and screws whenever possible. Where not concealed, use flush countersunk fastenings.

H. Mechanically fasten joints butted tight, flush, and hairline. Grind welds smooth and flush.

I. Obtain approval prior to site cutting or creating adjustments not scheduled.

J. After erection, prime welds, abrasions, and surfaces not shop primed, except surfaces to be in contact with concrete.

K. Finish paint steel components as specified in Section 09900.

3.4 ERECTION TOLERANCES

A. Section 01400 - Quality Requirements: Tolerances.

B. Maximum Variation From Plumb: 1/4 inch per story, non-cumulative.

C. Maximum Offset From True Alignment: 1/4 inch.

3.5 PROTECTION

A. Section 01700 - Execution Requirements: Protection of installed construction.

B. Protect stairs, balusters and handrail from damage from construction traffic and operations.
