THE INNER RING

JULY 2020 | FIRST INNINGS

Dear family

Hope you and your loved ones are well, and that you are spending your time wisely.

Powerplay Tick…tock… tick… tock…

We kill time. We save time. We rob and get robbed of time, we lose time, and we have all the time in the world. But not one of us is powerful enough to stop the march of time or slow it down.

The first 100 days of lockdown has passed, as well as the first six months of 2020. Time keeps flying by…

Tick… tock… tick… tock…

These sounds have different meanings to different people at different times. It can be a soothing rhythm, a confirmation that everything is under control, or it can be the anxious approach of a deadline. There are different ways of keeping time, there are various ways of showing time and there are a range of symbols depicting time.

One of the most famous symbols depicting time is the weather vane at Lord’s Ground in London, England. The symbolism behind the Father Time feature is Law 16 (3) of the laws of cricket: “After the call of time, the bails shall be removed from both wickets.”

THE INNER RING ISSUE: 7

For me it is the ultimate reminder that:

“we are merely temporary custodians of this beautiful game and we have to leave it in a better state than what we found it.”

This message might come across as a sad reflection on the swift passing of time, but I would rather have it interpreted as a celebration of time, special memories and a reminder that we do not have unlimited amounts of time. Therefore, spend limited amounts of your time on things that are not that important in the bigger scheme of things and ensure that you prioritize your time everyday.

Inside the boundary rope KZNCU staff continue to work remotely with a limited number of stadium and finance staff accessing Hollywoodbets Kingsmead and the PMB Oval. Most of our time are spent on the governance and administration aspects of our business including the annual audit, preparing for our AGM, awards functions and ensuring that all staff and players are upskillinging themselves during this period.

CSA recently announced a men’s high performance training squad which will return to training. The players will train in small monitored groups with identified coaches. These sessions will be in accordance with the guidelines set out by the CSA COVID-19 Steering Committee.

Various Hollywoodbets Dolphins are part of this squad – Keshav Maharaj, Andile Phehlukwayo, David Miller, Imran Tahir, SJ Erwee, Khaya Zondo, Daryn Dupavillon, Senuran Muthusamy, Keagan Petersen and Marques Ackerman.

Unfortunately there is still no return for any other cricket activities. Whilst is appreciative of the permission granted by the Honourable Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, we are mindful that our motivation was based on the fine balancing act of saving lives and protecting livelihoods. Therefore, our approach remains one informed by a duty of care, as a key fundamental, to return to economic activity. CSA, in conjunction with the cricket fraternity, continue to work on solutions that will enable people to return to their livelihoods whilst the safety of all cricketers are assured.

This week the player introductions will cover another three members of our exciting squad:

SHIRT NUMBER 15 It is my birthday and has always been a special number to me. This number also reminds me of my personal life and honours my parents as it is the day they brought me into this world. Wearing this number reminds me of who I play my cricket for and of my journey thus far.

DOLPHINS ALL TIME HERO

Lance Klusener I grew up in Zululand and as a kid watching someone from Zululand do the special things he did on the cricket field was incredible. Klusener’s career was sensational. Watching his career unfold inspired me and reminded me that you can get where you want to no matter where you come from.

FAVOURITE KINGSMEAD MEMORY My favourite Kingsmead memory was taking 5

on debut for the Dolphins. Was incredibly

special and a moment I will always cherish!

SHIRT NUMBER 02 I played my first ever day/night cricket at the age of 8 or 9 years. The shirt number we received for this match was in batting order and the number has just stuck with me since.

DOLPHINS ALL TIME HERO Shaun Pollock A South African legend. I love the way he conducts himself on and off the field. His career statistics are unbelievable. Watching him win matches for his country inspired me to want to do the same.

David Miller I have the pleasure of working with him and even though he is my teammate I respect how his career has unfolded. I draw inspiration from his work ethics, humble characteristics and aspire to create a career

as legendary as his.

FAVOURITE KINGSMEAD MEMORY I played my first Khaya Majola Week in Durban at the age of 17 years. It was around the time of the Boxing Day Test match between South Africa and India at Kingsmead Stadium. My dad extended our stay in

Durban to attend this Test match especially because

it was Kallis’ last test match. After experiencing the vibe in the Stadium when Kallis scored a 100, I told my dad that I would like to play cricket here at Kingsmead one day. The combination of Kingsmead’s beauty and knowing that the beach is a stone throw away drew me to Durban. It is really special that I get to represent the Dolphins and live out this dream.

SHIRT NUMBER 65

Adding my parents, sister and my birthdays

together give you a total of 65. This family

number motivates me to always do my best to make them proud.

DOLPHINS ALL TIME HERO Imran Tahir I love his energy. He gives off his best regardless of whether it is training or match

day. Immensely talented and is always helpful

and positive in the changeroom. I am inspired to bring the same energy, positivity and match winning performances to the team as Immy T does.

FAVOURITE KINGSMEAD MEMORY

There are so many! It is difficult to pick just

one. I think it could be my T20 debut against

the Knights in the CSA T20 Challenge. It was a low scoring match with wickets tumbling everywhere. It was a special feeling to be able to bat through and secure the win for the team. To help my team win a match is all that I aspire to do. To be able to do it in an exciting match is a bonus. The crowd was phenomenal that day which just makes the memory even more special.
