The legend Once Indra killed a demon, even though the demon had not harmed anyone. This act brought a curse upon Indra that forced him to become a wanderer. As he wandered, Indra found himself lost, and nobody would tell him the way to redeem him from his sin. After much wandering Indra was freed from his suffering through the power of a Shivalingam in a forest, and so he built a small temple at that site. It so happened that at that time in South India there was a Pandyan king called Malayadhwaja Pandiyan ruling a small city by the name Manavur , which was quite near to this Shivalinga.

    TEMPLES OF SOUTH INDIA by CjJaruati 73hampi Untouched by the architectural concepts of the West, un­ moved by Islamic influence, relatively undisturbed by the various invasions which the rest of India was periodically subject to, the temples of South India are some of the purest examples of Hindu and Dravidian art existing today. These buildings are no monarch's appeasement of his own vanity. Nor are they memorials to the dead. Nor again are they a more commemoration of one particular event. Rather are they testaments to Man's timeless faith in something or someone beyond himself. In fact these massive structures surging upwards and encompassing all the manifold aspects of Hindu reli­ gion and mythology are symbols of humanity's eternal reaching out to the sublime, the divine, the infinite. And whereas most well­ known architectural monuments are things of the past, wrapped in the silence of the dead, these temples today are still teeming with life and with a vitality all their own. The heyday of the South Indian temples lasted from the 7th to the 17th century, a.d.-from the reign of the Pallavas to the Vija­ yanagar and Nayyak dynasties. However, from references to them in the Puranas such as the Mahabharata and Ramayana, in the early Dravidian annals and in the works oE Tamil, Telugu, Malayalee and Canarese poets and scholars, the origin of this temple art dates back many hundreds of years before that, even to pre-Aryan times. Such a reference in a very early Dravidian work is made to the temple of Kanya Kumari at the extreme southern tip of India where the three oceans meet.

    DD India’s Spectacular India Series ‘Divine Marriage’ One of the greatest achievements of the Nayaka period in Tamil Nadu is the making of the Meenakshi Temple at Madurai. It was made in the reign of Tirumalai Nayaka in the mid 17th century and is one of the largest temples ever to be made. The great Meenakshi temple is like a city in itself. It has two shrines, one to Shiva and one to Parvati: Parvati as Meenakshi, the beautiful one, the fish-eyed one. The abstract concepts of the formless eternal, Nirguna or Arupa, are difficult for the mind to grasp. Therefore deities are made in order that people are able to relate to them. Shiva is a personification of qualities within us. We look upon Shiva we mediate upon him to awaken those qualities within us. Qualities of nobility, qualities of courage with which we must face the demons of our ignorance. Families are made around the deities in order that we are able to relate to the deities in a more human way, relate to them even through our own emotions. Therefore Parvati is made as a spouse of Shiva. Here she is as Parvati with the focus on her beauty: Meenakshi, Parvati the beautiful one. There are great festivals in this temples, annual festivals, monthly festivals, even daily festivals. One of the wonderful daily festivals is in the evening when Shiva is taken with the great deal of fanfare to the shrine of Parvati where he will spend the night with her. In the morning they are woken up with sweet bhajans, divine songs and Shiva is then taken back to his own shrine.

    Brief History of Madurai Madurai, one of the oldest cities in southern India, is regarded as the cultural centre of Tamil Nadu. The Pandya dynasty, with Madurai as its capital, was known to the ancient Greeks. Madurai appears on Ptolemy's map of the world. It was considered by foreigners as ‘Athens of the South.' Known as the ‘temple city,' it is a sacred centre or a cosmic centre (i.e., not a centre in any economic or political sense). “A sacred centre need not be in the crossroads of trade routes or the seat of power, though many like Peking or Madurai are both.” A sacred centre has a “vertical dimension” linking this world with the world of the heavens. This is true in the case of Madurai where the celestial wedding of Lord Siva with Meenakshi, the local Goddess, is believed to have taken place. This marriage is nothing but a link between the earth and heaven. Temple, the fulcrum The Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple is clearly the geographic and ritual centre of the ancient city of Madurai. The temple walls, the city streets and finally the city walls were built around the temple in concentric squares. Tamil literary works of the first three centuries of the Christian era mention about the layout of the city. According to them, the temple was the nucleus of the city and streets were laid around it. They compare the city layout to a lotus at the centre with its petals around it. Of the Gopuras of this temple, the eastern one was erected by Sundarapandya.
