SHANCELOT

The fastest runner of his crop, Shancelot produced an astonishing display in the Amsterdam Stakes (G2), setting searing fractions of :21.79, :43.94, 1:07.63 and 1:14.01 to score by 12½ lengths. For this performance, Shancelot earned a record-breaking Beyer Speedfigure of 121, the highest ever achieved by a three-year-old sprinter. He again showed brilliant early pace in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1), where he defeated all but the four-year-old Champion Sprinter Mitole, while defeating Champion Sprinter Whitmore.

Shancelot is a son of Shanghai Bobby, an undefeated juvenile champion, by Harlan’s Holiday, also sire of the sensational Into Mischief. Shanghai Bobby is himself already sire of 36 stakes winners, and six grade one winners. Shancelot is out of True Kiss, a stakes winning three- quarters sister to grade one winning sprinter and grade one sire Yes It’s True. It’s also the immediate family of Champion Kiss A Native, grade one winners Silver Max and Girvin, and 2021 classic contender Midnight Bourbon.

Shanghai Bobby has sired stakes winner Gotta Go out of a mare by Unbridled’s Song, and a grade one winner out of a mare by that horse’s son, Dunkirk. It would also be possible to bring in Unbridled’s Song through Cross Traffic, Eurosilver, Even the Score, First Defence, Half Ours, Midshipman, Old Fashioned, Rockport Harbor, Songandaprayer and Zensational. Unbridled’s Song is by Unbridled, and there is also a Shanghai Bobby two-year-old stakes winner out of a mare by Birdstone (by Grindstone, a son of Unbridled). Unbridled is also responsible for Broken Vow and Empire Maker (sire of Pioneerof the Nile and Bodemeister), and is from the Fappiano line, which can also be introduced via Rubiano (sire of First Bling), Victory Gallop (by Cryptoclearance, grandsire of Candy Ride, himself sire of Twirling Candy).

Fappiano is from the Mr. Prospector line, and Shanghai Bobby has sired a grade one winner out of a mare by Mutakddim, from the Seeking the Gold branch of that line, which could also be introduced through Petionville and Cape Town. From the Forty Niner branch of Mr. Prospector there is a grade one winner out of a mare by a son of Jules (also sire of Peace Rules), and a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Roar. This suggest bringing in Forty Niner though Distorted Humor (sire of Sharp Humor, Flower Alley, Drosselmeyer, Jimmy Creed and Maclean’s Music), End Sweep (sire of Trippi), Coronado’s Quest, Luhuk, Banker’s Gold, Tactical Advantage and Twining. Jules is bred along very similar lines to Machiavellian, the sire of Street Cry (himself sire of Street Sense).

There is a Shanghai Bobby stakes winner out of a mare by Quality Road, by Elusive Quality (also sire of Smarty Jones), who is from the Gone West branch of Mr. Prospector. Other sources of Gone West include Speightstown (sire of Munnings) Mr. Greeley (sire of

Whywhywhy), Grand Slam and Proud Citizen. Shanghai Bobby has a stakes winner out of a mare by Northern Afleet, who is sire of Afleet Alex, and is bred on a similar cross to Kingmambo, the sire of Lemon Drop Kid.

Shanghai Bobby has shown a marked affinity for mares from the A.P. Indy line. His graded stakes winner Pirate’s Punch, a close relative to Shancelot is out of a mare by Malibu Moon, and he also has stakes winners out of mares by Sky Mesa (by Pulpit) and A.P. Five Hundred. Malibu Moon (sire of Orb) and Pulpit are A.P. Indy/Mr. Prospector cross as are Mineshaft (sire of Discreetly Mine and Dialed In), Flatter, Congrats and Girolamo. It would also be possible to introduce Pulpit through Tapit (sire of Trappe Shot, Tonalist, Tapizar, Tapiture and Constitution), Stroll, Parading, Sightseeing, Power Broker and Mr. Speaker. Other stallion sons of A.P. Indy include Bernardini (sire of Algorithms, Stay Thirsty and To Honor And Serve), Jump Start, Stephen Got Even and Majestic Warrior.

Out of Northern Dancer line mares, Shanghai Bobby has a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Langfuhr (sire of Lawyer Ron) and a stakes winner out of a mare by War Front (sire of Air Force Blue, Jack Milton, Summer Front and The Factor), both from the Danzig branch, which can also be sourced through Belong to Me, Boundary, Exchange Rate, War Chant and Hard Spun.

Shanghai Bobby has a pair of stakes winners out of mares from the Sadler’s Wells branch of Northern Dancer, one out of a mare by El Prado, sire of Medaglia d’Oro (whose son, Warrior’s Reward has also worked under the Harlan’s Holiday line), Kitten’s Joy and Artie Schiller. Sadler’s Wells might also be brought in through Horse Chestnut, Powerscourt, Magician and Capo Blanco.

The dam of Shancelot is half-sister to a grade one winner by Badge of Silver, by Silver Deputy, from the Deputy Minister branch of Northern Dancer. Shanghai Bobby is sire of a stakes winner out of a mare by Silver Deputy, making this strain particularly appealing, and Silver Deputy is also sire of Posse and Spring At Last). There is also a stakes winner by Shanghai Bobby out of a mare by Deputy Minister son, Defrere, a brother to Dehere (sire of Graeme Hall). Other potential broodmare sire from the Deputy Minister line include Awesome Again (sire of Ghostzapper, Toccet, Oxbow, Paynter, Daaher and Awesome of Course), Touch Gold, Deputy Commander, Salt Lake, French Deputy and Forest Camp.

Shanghai Bobby sired Raoyal Ascot graded stakes winner Shang Shang Shang out of a mare by Yankee Victor, a son of Saint Ballado from the Halo line. Saint Ballado is also sire of Saint Liam, Straight Man, Flame Thrower and Captain Bodgit, and is a brother to Devil’s Bag (sire of Devil His Due and Twilight Agenda) and Halo can also be brought in through More Than

Ready (sire of Ready’s Image, Verrazano and Daredevil) and Hat Trick. Halo is from the Hail to Reason line, and from the Roberto branch of that line, Shanghai Bobby has a stakes winner out of a mare by Repriced, with other Roberto sources including Kris S. (sire of Arch, Prized, You and I and Kissin Kris – sire of Champion Kiss A Native from the family of Shancelot; grandsire of Blame), a graded winner out of a mare by Dynaformer).

Shanghai Bobby’s graded winner Extra Hope is out of a mare by Tiznow (sire of Midnight Bourbon from this family, and represented by Tiz Wonderful, Colonel John, Morning Line and Tizway) and from from the Relaunch branch of In Reality, also represented by Skywalker (sire of Bertrando; grandsire of Officer) and Honour and Glory, sire of Put it Back. There is a Shanghai Bobby stakes winner out of a mare by Indian Charlie (sire of Uncle Mo, Adios Charlie, Bwana Charlie, Liaison and Cinco Charlie). Indian Charlie is by In Excess, also sire of Rocky Bar, Notional and Bring the Heat. Shanghai Bobby has a stakes winner out of a mare by Cherokee Run (sire of Yonaguska and Kafwain), from the Blushing Groom line also represented by Mt. Livermore (sire of Orientate, Housebuster and Peaks and Valleys), Rahy and Candy Stripes. From the Damascus line there are stakes winners out of mares by Gilded Time and Banking (a son of Confidential Talk, a three-quarters brother to Private Account). It would also be intriguing to try Shancelot with a mare by Yes It’s True, a close relative the dam of Shancelot.
