My one-month sojourn at the Nordic Africa Institute in Uppsala, Sweden was a tremendous time and I am thankful to Professor Fantu Cheru, Dr. Knut Christian Mhyre and Associate Professor Mats Utas whose contributions were invaluable. ii ABSTRACT The transition from childhood to adulthood is a major one, not only for the individual but the society at large. In some societies, the rites of passage are observed to usher young people into adulthood. The Krobos in Ghana are no exception. They have the most elaborate puberty rites for girls in Ghana today. This study investigates the historical background of the practice, the changes it has undergone and reasons for these changes. The ways in which this practice forms part of the ethnic identity of the Krobos and more importantly, a Krobo woman is explored. The study draws on concepts such as gender, values, modernization, and ethnicity. The study reveals that the practice was a form of vocational training for young women in which they were taught generally how to assume their roles as responsible women in the society. This was in the absence of formal education. It was also established in a bid to increase the status of the girl-child in the Krobo society. It is however common to find girls as young as two participate in the rite. Though the rites involved bodily exposure, initiates are allowed to cover their breasts sometimes during the rites instead of having them exposed the entire time as was the case in the past. The duration of the rites has also reduced from about a year to four days. Christianity, modernization, formal education and environmental changes have been attributed to these changes. The changes however serve to encourage its continuity. The custom is however adept with symbols, the major one being that initiates are transformed into women. It also depicts the typical traditional life of the Krobos and the cultural construction of who are woman should be and what her roles and responsibilities are. The study shows that the custom is a means of female empowerment in a patrilineal society as it is aimed at bringing females into the limelight. People adhere to the practice mainly because it is tradition and the desire to have a place in their family home in Kroboland. The deep sense of belonging therefore becomes part of the motivation to engage in the practice. Christianity and modernization are however factors that make people refrain from the practice.     Contemporary Rites of Passage At A Time When We Need Them The Most By Tara Moreno There’s no doubt we are living in turbulent times. As human consciousness shifts, it is becoming more and more apparent that we need communities to recognize and honor the growing pains and transitional challenges that we are all experiencing as individuals. How can communities do that? One very important way is by practicing rites of passage, which have been used by ancient and modern cultures around the world to support community members in transition by ritualizing and supporting change. The term rite of passage, as coined in 1929 by anthropologist Arnold van Gennep, describes the universal practice of ceremonializing life’s major events or transitions. In the book The Art of Ritual, authors Renee Beck and Sydney Barbara Metrick remind us that “Human beings have used ritual for centuries as an important buffer to change and as a way of consciously recognizing and supporting a life event rather than denying or indulging in it … the end results of all ritual are increased balance, strength, energy, and comfort.” A more commonly known rites of passage is “initiation”, which often takes the form of a coming of age ceremony in which a community comes together to person as they let go of one stage of development (childhood or adolescence) and embrace the new identity or role of the next stage (adolescence or young adulthood). Globally, there are numerous cultures currently using coming of age ceremonies regularly, exemplified by the Pathways programs for youth in Australia.

FL-2009-000132-GHA Ghana: Floods 16 July, 2009 The International Federation’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) is a source of un-earmarked money created by the Federation in 1985 to ensure that immediate financial support is available for Red Cross and Red Crescent response to emergencies. The DREF is a vital part of the International Federation’s disaster response system and increases the ability of National Societies to respond to disasters. CHF 101,314 (USD 93,290 or EUR 66,887) has been allocated from the Federation’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the Ghana Red Cross Society in delivering immediate assistance to 1,000 vulnerable targeted households. Unearmarked funds to repay DREF are encouraged. Summary: Several hours of rain in the night of Friday 19 June, 2009 and subsequent heavy down pours along the coastal and forest belt of Ghana from 6 to 9 July, 2009 caused massive Flooded areas in Ghana/Red Cross of Ghana destruction of private and public properties in most communities in the western parts of Accra, Eastern, Volta, Central, Western and Ashanti Regions.     Oral Tradition, 17/2 (2002): 236-258 Rites of Passage and Oral Storytelling in Romanian Epic and the New Testament Margaret H. Beissinger The exploration of traditional narratives that circulated in the pre- modern age through the comparative study of contemporary genres has a rich precedent in the groundbreaking work of Milman Parry and Albert Lord. Starting in the 1930s, Parry and Lord sought to gain insight into the compositional style of the Homeric epics by observing and analyzing Yugoslav oral epic poets and their poetry. Their findings and conclusions were seminal. In 1960, Lord posited that traditional singers compose long sung poetry in isometric verses in performance through their reliance on groups of words that are regularly used-—as parts of lines, entire lines, and groups of lines—to represent ideas in the poetry.1 This became known as the theory of oral-formulaic composition and has had profound implications in the study of epic and other traditional genres from ancient to modern times.2 Oral epic is no longer performed in today’s former Yugoslavia. But there are still traces of traditional narrative poetry elsewhere in the Balkans, namely in southern Romania, where I have done much fieldwork among epic singers and at epic performances. Though greatly inspired by the work of Parry and Lord, my goals in this article, of course, are far humbler. I examine narrative patterns in a Romanian epic song cycle in order to offer possible models for the further study of oral storytelling in the New Testament. My exploration centers on epics of initiation and the nature of the initiatory hero.
