Data collected by health regulatory agencies are crucial in measuring how a country is performing in these areas, determining the scope and nature of gaps, guiding how interventions can improve health workforce regulation, and measuring success of these interventions. Kenya, supported by the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), developed electronic databases at these regulatory agencies that can provide information to assist in moving towards universal healthcare for all. These databases, referred to as regulatory human resource information systems (rHRIS), serve as the basis of the data in this National Report on the Status of the Health Workforce in Kenya. The availability, distribution, and accessibility of the health workforce with the relevant skills at a particular period strongly influence the ability of health systems to meet the constitutional requirement of providing quality health services to every citizen. In addition, the aspiration of universal health coverage in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is largely dependent on a health workforce that is responsive to the ever-evolving needs of health systems. Factors that influence the demand for health services have a role in shaping the requirements of a health workforce. Changes in population demographics, epidemiological profiles of communities, morbidity and mortality dynamics, and policies, among other factors, influence the demand and supply of health workers. Therefore, strengthening the health workforce through policy, adequate financing, planning, recruitment, training, deployment, and retention is paramount to ensuring everyone has access to a qualified health worker, thus improving the ability of health systems to achieve global and national health goals as prioritized in the new SDG targets.     MINISTRY OF HEALTH CHOLERA SITUATION REPORT IN KENYA AS AT 5TH MAY 2015 Weekly Situation Summary Since 26th December 2014, Cholera outbreak has affected 7 counties: Nairobi, Migori, Homa Bay, Bomet, Mombasa, Nakuru and Muranga Counties. Migori, Homabay and Bomet Cholera outbreaks are now considered successfully controlled The outbreak first started in Nairobi County on 26th December 2014. Later the outbreak was reported in Migori County on 30th January 2015, Homa Bay County on 2nd February 2015, Bomet County on 12th March 2015, Mombasa County on 6th April 2015, Nakuru 8th April and Muranga county on 18th April 2015. As of 5th May 2015, a total of 2156 cases and 42 deaths (CFR=1.9%) had been reported nationally distributed as follows: Nairobi 145 cases, 5 deaths (CFR 3.4%); Migori 915 cases, 12 deaths (CFR 1.3%); Homa Bay 377 cases, 5 deaths (CFR 1.4%) , Bomet 272 cases, 2 deaths (CFR 1.5%) ,Mombasa 69 cases, 5 deaths (CFR 7.2%), Muranga 278 cases, 1 death (0.4%), and Nakuru 100 cases, 12 deaths (CFR 12%) Cumulatively, 274 new cases were reported in the last one week (164 in Muranga, 73 in Nakuru, 17 in Mombasa and 20 in Nairobi). This is an increase from the previous week where 35 new cases were reported. 6 new deaths were reported in the last one week (5 in Nakuru and 1 in Nairobi). There are 34 current admissions in Mombasa, Nakuru and Nairobi Counties. 1 | Page New cases reported in Nairobi were detected in new epicentres- Kibera, Mukuru Kayiaba and Mukuru Kwa Njenga slums.

    Special Theme ±Inequalities in Health Inequality of child mortality among ethnic groups in sub-Saharan Africa M. Brockerhoff1 & P. Hewett2 Accounts by journalists of wars in several countries of sub-Saharan Africa in the 1990s have raised concern that ethnic cleavages and overlapping religious and racial affiliations may widen the inequalities in health and survival among ethnic groups throughout the region, particularly among children. Paradoxically, there has been no systematic examination of ethnic inequality in child survival chances across countries in the region. This paper uses survey data collected in the 1990s in 11 countries (Central African Republic, Coà te d'Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Namibia, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Uganda, and Zambia) to examine whether ethnic inequality in child mortality has been present and spreading in sub-Saharan Africa since the 1980s. The focus was on one or two groups in each country which may have experienced distinct child health and survival chances, compared to the rest of the national population, as a result of their geographical location. The factors examined to explain potential child survival inequalities among ethnic groups included residence in the largest city, household economic conditions, educational attainment and nutritional status of the mothers, use of modern maternal and child health services including immunization, and patterns of fertility and migration. The results show remarkable consistency. In all 11 countries there were significant differentials between ethnic groups in the odds of dying during infancy or before the age of 5 years. Multivariate analysis shows that ethnic child mortality differences are closely linked with economic inequality in many countries, and perhaps with differential use of child health services in countries of the Sahel region.

Physician point of care tools are evidence-based electronic clinical resources that assist with care decisions, research, Graduate Medical Education (GME) and continuing medical education (CME). These tools also provide quick references, supplemented by a research platform with a database of core resources such as full text electronic monographs, journals and articles. The most popular benefits of these tools are pharmaceutical information and calculations, evidentiary summaries, and CME credits. Ascension previously had two tools in place: DynaMed and Up to Date. Who made the decision to pursue this initiative to move to one national physician point of care tool for Ascension? This initiative was led by senior leadership within Clinical & Network Services (CNS) including Richard Fogel, MD, Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer, CNS; Baligh Yehia, MD, MPP, FACP, Chief Medical Officer, CNS; and Michelle Heavens, Vice President, Operations, CNS, with input from a decision team which included Chief Clinical Officers, Designated Institutional Officers, Ascension Medical Group (AMG) dyad leadership and library services. This tool is managed by library services, which transitioned to CNS in November 2019. The decision team developed key requirements for the tool, gained trial access to both tools, attended live demonstrations, reviewed pricing and coverage terms, and evaluated both vendors. The author endeavours to deepen the understanding of the trends of conflict. A consideration on the discourse on the historical development is given attention. The article’s core is conflict between the five ethnic communities that straddle this disputed triangle namely: the Didinga and Toposa from South Sudan; the Nyangatom, who move around South Sudan and Ethiopia; the Dassenach, who have settled East of the Triangle in Ethiopia; and the Turkana in Kenya. The article delineates different factors that promote conflict in this triangle and how these have impacted on pastoralism as a way of livelihood for the five communities. Lastly, the article discusses the possible ways to deal with the intractable conflict in the Ilemi Triangle. Introduction Ilemi triangle is an arid hilly terrain bordering Kenya, South Sudan and Ethiopia, that has hit the headlines and catapulted onto the international centre stage for the wrong reasons in the recent past. Retrospectively, the three countries have been harshly criticized for failure to contain conflict among ethnic communities that straddle this contested area. Perhaps there is no better place that depicts the opinion that the strong do what they will and the weak suffer what they must than the Ilemi does.

Abstract: The main aim of this paper was to examine and analyze the ethical and moral issues in the healthcare systems in Kenya, with special emphasis being given to physician performance, nursing care and professionalism. The research was carried out in 8 (eight) provinces of Kenya, due to their cultural similarity and findings established. Research questionnaires were prepared and hand delivered to top administrators, employees, students pursuing healthcare professions, religious leaders and patients as well as private cooperates, government officials in Kenya especially in research regions. The paper employed ethical theories such as virtue ethics theory, deontological ethics theory, ethical learning and growth theory. Teleological ethics, utilitarian theory and ethical principles such as autonomy, beneficence, non- maleficence, double effect, confidentiality and informed consent to build its content. The research involved survey approach to get responses from the eight provinces. An analysis of the data was carried out using principal component analysis. A major finding was found to be the weakening influence of the healthcare institutions to instill ethical concerns on the physicians, nurses and other members of society on healthcare management in Kenya.
