nushka Sharma sits down, kicks off her heels, and—in what I know now as her jaun- ty manner—slaps the table. We’re hav- ing dinner at Wasabi by Morimoto, the actor’s “favourite restaurant in the world in ”, and she orders a awhole bunch of food without glancing at the menu: two kinds of carpaccio, avocado and wasabi tacos, miso- marinated black cod with garlic rice. “You’re eating too neatly,” she com- plains, devouring a (very large) taco with comic vengeance. A little later, Christian Louboutin will stop by our table to say hello, startling Sharma, who struggles to find her abandoned pair of shoes— serendipitously, spiked nude Lou- boutins—while attempting to stand up and offer the virtuoso shoe de- signer advice on what to order. This is not without its complications: he doesn’t eat fish. After the episode plays itself out, I can’t help but join her in the five minutes of laughter that follows. Sharma’s father, a retired Indian army colonel, believes that people are the polar opposite of the way they ap- pear in public. If we were to follow this hypothesis, his 24-year-old star daugh- ter is a neat, solemn, supremely organ- ised young woman who knows exactly what she’s doing. The impression fits her. For all her top-bracket fame, “she’s still un- touched by the industry,” the veteran director observes. Sharma believes the most impor- tant thing is for her to work with good directors, which she has consist- ently managed to do so far—a fact that makes me suspect it isn’t as que sera, sera as she makes it appear. “Working with people like [Bhard- waj], [Hirani], Anurag… their life ex- periences are so varied that it helps them build really distinctive charac- ters. And that helps me…” She also says that Yash Chopra and Vishal Bhardwaj are on different ends of the spectrum. “What’s common is the passion that goes into film-making.” Her friend, director Ashima Chib- ber—they met at the Yash Raj Films campus five years ago—points out that looks and talent don’t necessarily lead to stunning success. “It’s impor- tant to structure your career right, especially with such few roles being written for women, and Anushka does this all on her own. She’s also been wise to cultivate relationships with mentors like Aditya [Chopra]… This isn’t a business where luck takes you very far.” Sharma’s debut character, small- town girl Taani Gupta, had surprised audiences with a thrilling bike-chase sequence.
