Copeland Unclassified Roads - Published January 2021 • The list has been prepared using the available information from records compiled by the County Council and is correct to the best of our knowledge. It does not, however, constitute a definitive statement as to the status of any particular highway. • This is not a comprehensive list of the entire highway network in Cumbria although the majority of streets are included for information purposes. • The extent of the highway maintainable at public expense is not available on the list and can only be determined through the search process. • The List of Streets is a live record and is constantly being amended and updated. We update and republish it every 3 months. • Like many rural authorities, where some highways have no name at all, we usually record our information using a road numbering reference system. Street descriptors will be added to the list during the updating process along with any other missing information. • The list does not contain Recorded Public Rights of Way as shown on Cumbria County Council’s 1976 Definitive Map, nor does it contain streets that are privately maintained. • The list is property of Cumbria County Council and is only available to the public for viewing purposes and must not be copied or distributed. -

WAINWRIGHT'S COAST TO COAST - THE WESTERN SECTION The 200 mile Coast to Coast walk from St Bees on the Cumbrian coast to Robin Hood's Bay on the North Sea shore has attracted hikers looking for a long distance challenge with the added attraction of three national parks and some of the country's most inspiring scenery. Despite its fame, this route remains unofficial and has only experienced some minor adjustments since being devised by Alfred Wainwright 40 years ago. This holiday tackles the western section of the trail crossing the Lake District from St Bees to Kirkby Stephen in seven walking days of 9 – 15½ miles a day. We'll be walking, on average, just under 13 miles a day throughout the walk with our longest days being 15½ miles. We'll walk from inn-to-inn staying in B&B's, guesthouses and small hotels with your baggage being transported for you each day leaving you to carry only what you need on the trail each day. -

FOREWORD BY COUNCILLOR MICHAEL McVEIGH HERITAGE CHAMPION, COPELAND BOROUGH COUNCIL The Borough of Copeland is home to many settlements that boast a wealth of heritage assets. We have many traditional buildings and street patterns that contribute to the unique character of the Borough’s landscape. The centres of those towns and villages that have significant architectural and historic value have been designated as conservation areas, giving these special places the additional protection they need and deserve. Copeland Borough Council has commissioned this Conservation Area Design Guide to help property owners, designers and builders understand the value of the heritage within our conservation areas, and to ensure that repairs, reinstatements and alterations are undertaken in a way that preserves these important assets. As Heritage Champion, I fully endorse the design principles and guidance that this document sets out. We need to ensure our heritage is enhanced and protected for the benefit of our residents and visitors, and for current and future generations to enjoy.
