Economic valuation is concerned with finding expression for what is important in life for human society. It should therefore be a central and integral part of government decision-making and policy. The paper starts with a review of concepts and methods for valuation. Three main types of valuation techniques are identified: conventional economic valuations, economic impact assessments and socio-economic investigations and livelihood analysis. On the basis of a literature review, valuation information was then synthesised for the major regional river basins and large lakes, and also used to develop a series of national fisheries profiles. To supplement this broad perspective, a series of case-studies are also presented, which focus in particular on the impact of changes in water management regime. Finally, the paper presents an assessment of the three main types of valuation methodology and a set of conclusions and recommendations for future valuation studies.

At the direction of that meeting the DSFDP has increased its efforts to provide both practical FAD assistance and development work in offshore FAD technology and exploitation. In addition, as directed by the 22nd RTMF, the Project has widened the scope of its activities to include, among other things, an ongoing effort to develop effective technology and exploitation techniques for FADs set in shallow inshore waters, most often for the particular purpose of aggregating baitfish species. 2. But somehow important issues, stories and even the wildlife I so adored lost their magic when defined by columns of scientific numbers. I now strive to convey environmental issues and stories through my writing and photography, without sacrificing the magic. I seek to provide an intimate perspective on nature in South Florida and from around the world, reflecting wildlife, their behaviors, and habitats both in an unaltered documentary-style and in a more interpretive abstract style achieved in-camera to convey the emotional experience. I minimize post-processing and avoid digital manipulation both in an attempt to stay as true to the moment as possible and because nature is impressive without human intervention. With my photography and writing, I aim to lure viewers more deeply into the natural world than they might venture on their own. I aim to reflect nature.
