Spinning off from the hit sitcom Man About The House, and created by the classic comedy team of Johnnie Mortimer and Brian Cooke, it charted the progress of erstwhile housemate Robin Tripp and his flourishing (or otherwise) career as a qualified chef running a little Fulham bistro – ‘Robin’s Nest’. Starring Richard O’Sullivan as Robin and Tessa Wyatt as his girlfriend (and later wife), Vicky, the series found Robin pursuing his dream project of opening his own bistro… for people who really appre- ciate high prices. The dream is just about holding up against the constant intervention of Vicky’s divorced father, James Nicholls (Tony Britton) – a would-be entrepreneur who also happens to own both the cou- ple’s flat and the bistro – along with their disaster- prone, one armed dishwasher Albert Riddle (David Kelly), and the unexpected arrival of twins… This set contains all six series of Robin’s Nest, originally transmitted between 1977 and 1981, as well as two Christmas specials, from 1979 and 1980. Running time approx 1200 mins. ROBIN’S NEST IS COMING TO TALKING PICTURES TV All 48 episodes from the six series will be shown, from 1977 to 1981. Starring Richard O’Sullivan, Tessa Wyatt and Tony Britton. Robin Tripp (Richard O’Sulli- van) now lives with girlfriend Vicky Nicholls, in a flat in Fulham above a bistro called Robins Nest. Vicky’s father, James, (Tony Britton), disapproves of Robin and is an over enthusiastic “sleeping partner” in the Bistro. Extra laughs provided by Richard Kelly as the one- armed dishwasher, Albert. Series begins: Monday 18th March at 17.30 and will air every weekday. 4 From the British Film Institute Stranger in the House (1967) Directed by Pierre Rouve, starring James Mason, Geraldine Chaplin, Ian Ogilvy. A cynical barrister must confront the alien world of the Swinging Sixties to defend his daughter’s boyfriend.

  • The Titfield Thunderbolt and the Camerton Branch'
Wells Railway Fraternity The guest speaker at our meeting at Wells Town Hall on 8th February was Simon Castens and his subject was 'The Titfield Thunderbolt and the Camerton Branch'. After a computer hitch had been overcome we settled down to an evening of pure nostalgia. Simon began with a brief outline of the history of the branch line which linked Camerton with the Avon Valley at Limpley Stoke. The line was partly built on the route of the old Somerset Coal Canal and opened in 1910. It was destined to have a fairly short life of just under a half century, ending shortly after Camerton Colliery closed in 1950 - the other major colliery served by the line, at Dunkerton, had stopped working earlier, in the 1930s. The line was then used by the BR Bridge Department for storage and the rails were finally lifted in 1958. Simon pointed out that when Ealing Studios decided to make the film 'The Titfield Thunderbolt', the Talyllyn Railway was the only enthusiast-run line anywhere and speculation has taken place as to whether the little Welsh railway was the inspiration for Tibby Clarke's story. There can be little doubt that the film served as encouragement for the movement which has resulted in today's preserved and heritage railway tourist industry. With the help of old photographs of the line and stills from the film, Simon then spoke of the making of the film in July and August 1952. The station at Monkton Combe served as that of the fictional village of Titfield, the name being a composite of Titsey and Limpsfield, two adjoining villages in Surrey.

  • The Nation's Matron: Hattie Jacques and British Post-War Popular Culture
The Nation’s Matron: Hattie Jacques and British post-war popular culture Estella Tincknell Abstract: Hattie Jacques was a key figure in British post-war popular cinema and culture, condensing a range of contradictions around power, desire, femininity and class through her performances as a comedienne, primarily in the Carry On series of films between 1958 and 1973. Her recurrent casting as ‘Matron’ in five of the hospital-set films in the series has fixed Jacques within the British popular imagination as an archetypal figure. The contested discourses around nursing and the centrality of the NHS to British post-war politics, culture and identity, are explored here in relation to Jacques’s complex star meanings as a ‘fat woman’, ‘spinster’ and authority figure within British popular comedy broadly and the Carry On films specifically. The article argues that Jacques’s star meanings have contributed to nostalgia for a supposedly more equitable society symbolised by socialised medicine and the feminine authority of the matron. Keywords: Hattie Jacques; Matron; Carry On films; ITMA; Hancock’s Half Hour; Sykes; star persona; post-war British cinema; British popular culture; transgression; carnivalesque; comedy; femininity; nursing; class; spinster. 1 Hattie Jacques (1922 – 1980) was a gifted comedienne and actor who is now largely remembered for her roles as an overweight, strict and often lovelorn ‘battle-axe’ in the British Carry On series of low- budget comedy films between 1958 and 1973. A key figure in British post-war popular cinema and culture, Hattie Jacques’s star meanings are condensed around the contradictions she articulated between power, desire, femininity and class.

Becoming Morse in Endeavour: the prequel as locus of reconstruction of the past? 1 Becoming Morse in Endeavour: the prequel as locus of reconstruction of the past? Armelle Parey Introduction 1 The figure of Inspector Morse first appeared in a novel by Colin Dexter, Last Bus to Woodstock, in 1975. By the time the character reached the TV screen in 1987, impersonated by John Thaw (in The Dead of Jericho), Colin Dexter (1930-2017) had already published 7 of the 12 novels he wrote in total around the figure of the grumpy opera- loving inspector. The TV adaptation, Inspector Morse, consisted in 33 films, broadcast in series or as “specials”, aired on ITV between 1987 and 2000, finishing with the adaptation of The Last Remorseful Day (1999) in which the character dies1. Following the death of John Thaw in 2002, Dexter stipulated in a clause in his will that no other actor should reprise the role2.

Without these documents, the best investigative reporting in the world could not have produced a book, and the secrets of CIA mind-control work would have remained buried forever, as the men who knew them had always intended. From the documentary base, I was able to expand my knowledge through interviews and readings in the behavioral sciences. Neverthe- less, the final result is not the whole story of the CIA's attack on the mind. Only a few insiders could have written that, and they choose to remain silent. I have done the best I can to make the book as accurate as possible, but I have been hampered by the refusal of most of the principal characters to be interviewed and by the CIA's destruction in 1973 of many of the key docu- ments.
