FULLY ALIVE WITH THE PASSION OF CHRIST

“There was a time when all those who had walked with Jesus suddenly found themselves on a winter path, a time when the whole world died and knew firsthand the power of killing frost. Their Friend was dead and when He died they heard November’s bugle blow on the hills. When he died all hope ended and they found themselves walking down the long valley where shadows are like breaths of stagnant air.

Then He came, like Jasmine flower on a January day. Seeing new signs of life and love they became changed people. And it was then, when they stood where Jasmine flowers grow, that He sent them out into the world to speak of the life that is like floral sunshine to all who put their trust in Him. That is what Christians are supposed to be, He said, Jasmine flowers of encouragement for people who know the January chill of disappointment.”

*LITANY FOR PENTECOST Cort Gatliff, MDiv Holy Spirit, Creator, in the beginning you moved over the waters. From Your breath all creation drew life. Without You, life turns to dust. Come, Holy Spirit! Holy Spirit, Counselor, by Your inspiration, the prophets spoke and acted in faith. You clothed them in power to be bearers of Your Word. Come, Holy Spirit! Holy Spirit, Power, You came as fire to Jesus’ disciples; You gave them voice before the rulers of this world. Come, Holy Spirit! Holy Spirit, Sanctifier, you created us children of God; you make us the living temple of your presence; you intercede within us with sighs too deep for words. Come, Holy Spirit! Holy Spirit, Giver of life, you guide and make holy the church you create; you give gifts— the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and fortitude, the spirit of knowledge and piety, the spirit of the fear of the Lord, that the whole creation may be transformed. Come, Holy Spirit! After a brief silence, the leader concludes the litany:

True and only Light, from whom comes every good gift: Send Your Spirit into our lives with the power of a mighty wind. Renew in us the power of our baptism that we may proclaim Your mighty acts. Open the horizons of our minds by the flame of Your wisdom. Loosen our tongues to show Your praise, for only in Your Spirit can we voice your words of peace and acclaim Jesus as Lord. Amen.

Cort Gatliff, MDiv *CALL TO CONFESSION

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION Almighty God, You poured Your Spirit upon gathered disciples creating bold tongues, open ears, and a new community of faith. We confess that we hold back the force of Your Spirit among us. We do not listen for Your word of grace, speak the good news of Your love, or live as a people made one in Christ. Have mercy on us, O God. Transform our timid lives by the power of Your Spirit, and fill us with a flaming desire to be Your faithful people, doing Your will for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PENTECOST SIGHTINGS Compiled by Daniel Killilea

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Abby Gatliff

LESSON FROM ACTS OF THE APOSTLES Acts 2:1-21 Abby Gatliff - verses 1-3 1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a vio- wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in Daniel Killilea - verses 4-6 other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. 5 Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6 And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. 7 Matthew Grauberger - verses 7-9 Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native lan- guage? 9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and Katya O’Leary - verses 10-12 the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” 12 All were amazed and perplexed, Rev. Dr. Ed Hurley - verses 13-15 saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.” 14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 15 Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. 16 No, this is what was spoken through Cort Gatliff, MDiv - verses 16-18 the prophet Joel: 17 ‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. 18 Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. 19 And I will show portents in the heaven Rev. Dr. Larry Michael - verses 19-21 above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. 20 The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the com- ing of the Lord’s great and glorious day. 21 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Thanks be to God.

Rev. Dr. Ed Hurley * LESSON 1 Peter 5:6-14 6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you. 8 Discipline yourselves, keep alert. Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around, looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, stead- fast in your faith, for you know that your brothers and sisters in all the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering. 10 And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, support, strengthen, and establish you. 11 To him be the power forever and ever. Amen. 12 Through Silvanus, whom I consider a faithful brother, I have written this short letter to encourage you and to testify that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it. 13 Your sister church in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings; and so does my son Mark. 14 Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ. Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Thanks be to God.

Rev. Dr. Ed Hurley *GOSPEL LESSON John 7:37-39 37 On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, 38 and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.’” 39 Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as yet there was no Spirit, be- cause Jesus was not yet glorified. Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Thanks be to God.

*HYMN AT THE PRESENTATION #326 (Blue) “Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart” Morecambe Rev. Dr. Ed Hurley *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered death and was buried. On the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated on the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. Amen.

By Your Spirit, baptize us again with Your flame of faith, fill us with the breath of zeal, inspire us with the witness of martyrs and saints, and send us forth into Your world to live Christ’s life in power and compassion. Take us, O God, and shape us according to Your will, in the service of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, now and forever. Amen.

FEED MY SHEEP UPDATE. Every Wednesday between 10:00am and Noon, the Feed My Sheep Ministry team distributes non-perishable groceries to our neighbors and church members, but during this pandemic emergency we realized that many of our seniors were not picking up groceries. For the 4th time recently, we selected the names of about fourteen seniors who had not picked up groceries and began to try to deliver some to them. Among the 11 bags that we delivered were to a lady on a walker who had just gotten home from the hospital. Also, we met a new neighbor, a 90-year-old lady who did not ask for groceries but was so grateful that we gave them to her. Finally, we called a lady who had not picked up groceries in a long time, and she returned our call saying she had tears in her eyes and wanted to know what time we were coming. When we arrived on her block, she was standing on the sidewalk…looking for us. The Feed My Sheep team members are committed to the extent we can to making sure that our families have groceries that they need. In addition to these special seniors, 13 bags were distributed by Lu Mahon to S.T.A.I.R. families, and Genie Deason distributed complete meals to two Sunday Club group homes. The S.T.A.I.R., Sunday Club, and Feed My Sheep teams are committed to supporting these families. Please keep our neighbors in your prayers.

SUNDAY CLUB UPDATE - We are not meeting yet, but you can help bridge this gap to provide good food for our folks by doing the following: 1. Make a casserole; 2. Bring prepackaged snacks like Little Debbie’s, chips, crackers etc.; 3. Bring fresh fruit (that does NOT need refrigeration) such as apples, oranges, and bananas, etc. Clearly mark any donations with a label that reads “Sunday Club” and deliver them to the SHPC kitchen. We are sharing some food from the Feed My Sheep ministry each Wednesday with our friends in two Norwood boarding homes. (There are approximately 12 folks at each house.) We would love to add a few “extras” like those mentioned above. Our friends are delighted to receive whatever we donate and are very grateful. I know I can count on so many of you who like to cook! Thanks so much for helping us! Questions? Contact Genie Deason at [email protected]. WORSHIP SERVICES WILL BE BROADCAST LIVE on Facebook and YouTube Sundays at 11:00am. Only worship leaders and broadcasters will be present in the building. The church will remain closed to all public services, public meetings and events until further notice. All the staff want to assure you that we are still available to serve our congregation and can be contacted any time by email and cellphone. Be sure to let us know immediately of any pastoral emergency or special needs.
