Festivals February 21–March 16, 2014 Featuring the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and Vienna State Opera Music, Film, Art, Panel Discussions, and More Terry Linke Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra A glittering cultural jewel at the heart of Europe, Vienna has for centuries drawn artists, dreamers, and innovators from all corners of the continent to its dazzling intellectual and artistic life. With its famed art salons and co ee houses, Vienna supported a unique culture in which artists and scientists, fi rebrands and aesthetes, met and freely exchanged ideas. From this hothouse atmosphere emerged revolutionary breakthroughs in psychology, literature, art, and music, reverberating around Europe and indeed the world. Carnegie Hall salutes Vienna’s extraordinary artistic legacy with Vienna: City of Dreams, a three-week citywide festival that features symphonic and operatic masterpieces, chamber music, and lieder, as well as new sounds that are emerging from this historic cultural capital. The festival is bookended by seven concerts in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage by the renowned Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and Vienna State Opera, led by esteemed conductors Franz Welser-Möst, Daniele Gatti, Andris Nelsons, and Zubin Mehta. The residency includes concert performances of both Alban Berg’s Wozzeck and Richard Strauss’s Salome, marking only the second time in their history that the Viennese musicians have performed opera in concert at Carnegie Hall. Other festival highlights include a Beethoven violin sonata cycle with Leonidas Kavakos and pianist Enrico Pace, Schubert’s great Die schöne Müllerin with baritone Matthias Goerne and pianist Christoph Eschenbach, a Discovery Day that focuses on Schubert’s fi nal years, and a Carnegie Hall–commissioned new work by Austrian composer Georg Friedrich Haas to be premiered by Ensemble ACJW.

  • Decca Discography
DECCA DISCOGRAPHY >>V VIENNA, Austria, Germany, Hungary, etc. The Vienna Philharmonic was the jewel in Decca’s crown, particularly from 1956 when the engineers adopted the Sofiensaal as their favoured studio. The contract with the orchestra was secured partly by cultivating various chamber ensembles drawn from its membership. Vienna was favoured for symphonic cycles, particularly in the mid-1960s, and for German opera and operetta, including Strausses of all varieties and Solti’s “Ring” (1958-65), as well as Mackerras’s Janá ček (1976-82). Karajan recorded intermittently for Decca with the VPO from 1959-78. But apart from the New Year concerts, resumed in 2008, recording with the VPO ceased in 1998. Outside the capital there were various sessions in Salzburg from 1984-99. Germany was largely left to Decca’s partner Telefunken, though it was so overshadowed by Deutsche Grammophon and EMI Electrola that few of its products were marketed in the UK, with even those soon relegated to a cheap label. It later signed Harnoncourt and eventually became part of the competition, joining Warner Classics in 1990. Decca did venture to Bayreuth in 1951, ’53 and ’55 but wrecking tactics by Walter Legge blocked the release of several recordings for half a century. The Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra’s sessions moved from Geneva to its home town in 1963 and continued there until 1985. The exiled Philharmonia Hungarica recorded in West Germany from 1969-75. There were a few engagements with the Bavarian Radio in Munich from 1977- 82, but the first substantial contract with a German symphony orchestra did not come until 1982.

------ ~!\'(~ _______ ,.____ _ n-~- ,- r••-, -- - PROGRAM SCHEDULE WNIB 97.1 fm January, 1972 The Advent Model 201 Tape Deck is, to our way of thinking, the ideal source for playing music in the the home. It combines the important characteristics of a high-performance open-reel tape recorder with the convenience of cassettes. The Advent Advent Model Model 201 will make recordings that are indistinguishable from most source material, including the best 201 Tape stereo records and FM broadcasts. Of equal importance, the Model 201 realizes the full potential of the new "Dolbyized" commercially recorded cassettes, the most significant source Deck of recorded music since the introduc tion of the stereo disc. The best of the "Dolbyized" pre-recorded cas settes are easily' the equivalent of the best disc recordings, and the number of releases will be continually in creasing. • Reissues from Ricercar, Eloquence and Beulah - January 2018 by Brian Wilson
Reissues from Ricercar, Eloquence and Beulah - January 2018 By Brian Wilson I would normally have included these reissues in one of the Second Thoughts and Short Reviews which I write with Dan Morgan, but the latest edition is already quite full, and I thought that these releases merited a separate article to themselves. The three series occupy different niches: the Ricercar, labelled Ricercar con Echo, are releases of earlier CD offerings from the late 1980s to the 2000s; Eloquence bring recordings from the Universal group of labels, Decca, DG and Philips; the Beulah are download only reissues of classic material from LP and, in some cases, 78s. Beulah downloads can be obtained from iTunes and Amazon, but in mp3 and usually at less than the full 320kbs. It sometimes takes a little longer before they appear, at the same price of £7.99, from Qobuz, but it’s worth waiting to hear them in the same quality as my press previews. Though sourced from disc rather than master tape, the quality is almost always as high as, for example, the same material reissued by Decca on Eloquence, often differently coupled. No booklet is ever included. Ricercar seem to be incapable of offering decent quality review previews – they tell me that it isn’t feasible. Though they had at least begun to encode their mp3 at the full 320kbs, the present batch came at an unacceptably low 192kbs – no better than BBC Radio 3 on DAB. I expect that these reissues will become available in better sound, presumably from eclassical.com; I’ll report back if and when that happens.

Their traditional greeting to the world is born of a spirit of hope, friendship and peace. January 1st 2019 marks 60 years that ORF will have been accompanying this "Concert of Concerts" with its television cameras. In fact, the programme is now broadcasted in almost 100 countries worldwide. A historical journey through time documenting the extent to which the broadcast has changed over the years, "Prelude to the New Year's Concert", will be shown at 10:40 on ORF2. Once again there will be a New Year’s Concert newcomer: German conductor Christian Thielemann. His engagement at the New Year’s Concert has long been anticipated by the music world, having been connected musically to the Vienna Philharmonic since 2000 and having often conducted at the Vienna State Opera. As chief conductor of the Sächsischen Staatskapelle Orchestra, Christian Thielemann has performed many concerts in Austria, not least in Salzburg, where he has been artistic director of the Easter Festival since 2013. ’Kapellmeister’ Thielemann (who prefers not to be referred to as Maestro) is very familiar with the music of the Strauss dynasty and the world of operetta. Nevertheless, his interpretation of this music especially at the New Year’s Concert represents a new level of achievement for him.
