Vol. XLII

No. 5

February 20, 2020

Dear TABC Members,

Playoff time is upon us as the regular season has come to a close. Congratulations to all that have made the playoffs and are in search of that elusive state title! Good luck to each one of you. Don’t forget to nominate deserving players and coaches for end of year TABC awards which can be found on the TABC website. The game of basketball lost a great ambassador last month with the passing of NBA legend Kobe Bryant and we at TABC saw many coaches and teams honor his legacy in numerous ways. Kobe said, “The most important thing is to try and inspire people so that they can be great in whatever they want to do.” Continue to promote TABC and its clinic and camps. Register for the clinic this May. Continue to be a servant leader in all that you do. Let’s continue to grow this great organization. Whether or not your team is still competing there is something that Kobe said that I believe relates to each of us; "It’s the one thing you can control. You are responsible for how people remember you—or don’t. So don’t take it lightly." — Kobe Bryant. Be passionate in all that you do!

Yours in Basketball and TABC,

If you happen to run into the Woodlands boys head coach Dale Reed, you may do a double take. At the sug- gestion of one of his junior high coaches, Nathan Redmond, Dale decided it was time to do something about his 257 pound body. After using a special diet, a health coach and a lot of will power, Coach Reed lost 67 pounds in four months. At his new weight of 190 pounds he feels like he did back in his playing days. He has now switched to a maintenance plan but likes his new feel and look much better. Give him a high five if you recognize him.

The McDonald’s All American Basketball all-star games will be held in Houston, Texas at the Toyota Center on April 3, 2020. The girls’ game will start at 4:00 pm with the boys’ game at 6:00pm. Texas is well repre- sented with Hannah Gusters of Irving MacArthur HS (Suzanne Oelschlegel) and Deja Kelly of Duncanville HS (LaJeanna Howard) playing in the girls game and Greg Brown III of Vandegrift HS () in the boys. Coaching the boys West team will be Houston St Thomas head coach Gary Hall with Langham Creek head coach Charles Ament as his assistant. Coach Hall is in his second year at St Thomas after a legendary career in Virginia. Coach Ament played at Dobie HS for Scott Talton and has coached at Langham Creek for 18 years, the last 13 as head coach. Congratulations to all.

Daylan Hamilton of the Klein Forest boys recently scored 29 and 40 points during a four game district win streak in district 15-6A action. The Golden Eagles of Coach Carey Black are shooting for their sixth consecu- tive district championship and to improve on last year’s 33-4 season and state runner up trophy. Daylan is do- ing his part against stacked defenses with other games of 37, 38 twice and 40.

De’Yona Gaston of the Pearland girls recently had an impressive double-double in district 23-6A play. The 6’3 senior scored 32 points to go with an impressive 19 rebounds for coach Lauren Martens Lady Oilers. Pearland is leading district play and De’Yona is primed for a playoff run.

Sir Isaac Herron had a triple-double against district rival Westside in 18-6A action. Herron had 14 points, 14 rebounds and 13 blocked shots for Coach Jerry Van Dusen’s Texans. Opponents beware of taking shots near the Lamar basket. Not in Sir Isaac’s house. By the way, he is only a junior.

Rebekah Crane is finally a senior at Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill. The four year starter recently scored her 2,000th career point. Last year she was named district MVP, TABC all state and all state tournament leading the Lady Red Devils to the 3A state championship. She also posted over 100 rebounds, 100 steals and 100 as- sists and she is on the way to a repeat in all categories for Coach Matt Garrett. Chapel Hill fans hope for a re- peat of the 3A state championship as well.

Scott Barrett has been the head boy’s coach at Huffman High School for 8 years and he recently won his 200th game while coaching the Falcons. They have made the state playoffs each year and are striving for their 4th district title during that span. Junior point guard Jacob Harvey leads Huffman averaging 28 points per game. The Falcons play in district 21-4A.

Jalin Conyers of the Gruver boys had a pretty good night against Stratford in a district 1-2A game recently. He scored 45 points and added 30 rebounds for Coach Brittin East’s Greyhounds. Gruver is 22-4 and ranked in the top 10 in 2A boys. A 6’5 senior, Jalin averaged 21 points per game last year.

Jordan Ivy-Curry of LaMarque had 59 points in a January non-district game against Hempstead. The Cougars of Coach Kevin Wilcox are currently 30-6 and state ranked #4 in class 4A and working on their eighth consec- utive playoff appearance.

After back to back seventh place finishes in tough district 7-6A Grand Prairie has made an amazing turnaround from district doormat to district champion. In his second year as a head coach Barron Brown has the Gophers experiencing new territory. Picked 5th by district coaches Grand Prairie is not only the district leader but top ten state ranked. They finally lost a district game to Waxahachie but are 25-2 on the season and lead the dis- trict with two games to go. Watch out for them in the playoffs.

Kyndall Hunter of Cypress Creek girls recently joined the 2,000 point club surpassing that milestone in a dis- trict win over Cy-Fair. She has helped lead Jennifer Alexander’s Lady Cougars to # 3 ranking in 6A and a 33- 0 (14-0 in district 17) heading into the playoffs. She is only a junior so the tabulation continues.

Last month we incorrectly reported that Joe Price started his coaching career as an assistant for the late James Sharp at Kerrville Tivy HS. The school was correct but Joe was assistant to his old Silsbee High School coach, Dan Montgomery while coaching at Tivy. All the rest about Joe’s great career and recovery from a kid- ney transplant in early January were also correct. And, Dan Montgomery is alive and well living in Freder- icksburg and recently wrote a book about his successful coaching career and interesting time serving on the State Board of Education. It is a great read and of course Joe is mentioned often in the book.

The Yates boys broke the national record for consecutive 100 point games in a district game in early February. It was the Lions sixteenth consecutive 100 plus point victory breaking a national record that the 2009-10 Yates state champion team set. That team was 34-0 and while Greg Wise’s troops can’t go undefeated, they can still be state champions. They are currently 20-4 and ranked # 1 in class 4A.

We told everyone to keep an eye on sophomore sensation Bryce Griggs of Fort Bend Hightower boys in the January newsletter. The # 3 state ranked Hurricanes had a district showdown with #2 state ranked Shadow Creek and Griggs did not disappoint. On 16 of 30 shooting he scored 44 points and added 5 rebounds and 2 steals. The Hurricanes of Coach Stephen Woods and the Sharks of coach David President are now tied for the district 24-5A lead. Their next meeting may come in the battle for Region III dominance. By the way, the shootout #2 (Shadow Creek won the first one) with the two 5A powers was enjoyed from the front row by none other than Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson.

With the help of former player, Warren McDonald, the town of Coleman in north central Texas, is construct- ing a park in the center of town. In that park will be a section dedicated to Coach Ken Cleveland. Ken and his wife Libby both grew up in Coleman and after starring for the University of Texas basketball team, Ken began his coaching career. His last 32 years were in Dimmitt, Texas where he won district 17 times, 10 regional ti- tles and 3 state championships. He had won 887 games when he was killed by lightening in 1993. To donate to the project you can call First United Bank of Dimmitt (806-647-4151) and ask to contribute to the Coach Cleveland Fund or they can donate through a cash app at $coachclevelandfund. For more information contact Warren McDonald at 214-304-8033.

The Port Aransas boys are in a district winning streak that has now reached 102 games with their 2019-20 dis- trict season completed. They have a bye for the final district game and are preparing for the playoffs. Coach Kris Jones’ Marlins are currently ranked #17 in class 2A and will continue the streak when district begins in 2020-21. We have reported other district win streaks through the years but do not keep records of them. If your school has a lengthy district win streak in the past or alive at present, please let us know and we will share them in the April newsletter. In Billy Ramey’s first year at Somerville last year the Yegua boys went 6-24. This season they are 18-10 and just clinched their first playoff spot in six years. They clinched at Snook where they hadn’t won in ten years. With their focus on their play instead of the referees, none of the Yeguas nor Coach Ramey received a tech- nical foul this season. Well done Somerville. A good lesson to each of us.

Ken Campbell is retiring as head basketball coach of the Reagan County boys after this season. In his 25 years there he has produced 18 playoff teams, 10 district champs and two regional tournament teams. In Ken’s 35 year career with stops at Grady, Lubbock Cooper, Bracketville and Anton before Reagan County, he has a ca- reer record of 603-336. Ken and his wife Sharon will be moving to Gatesville where their son Brit is the head boys coach. Don’t be surprised if Ken ends up by Brit’s side as an assistant.

Many college staffs outside the state of Texas join TABC in order to receive our high school coach’s directory to help with recruiting. We are no longer a secret on the recruiting trail like is was back in the dark ages be- fore TABC was organized and camps and leagues were illegal. Now Texas is among the top 3 recruiting areas for colleges on any level. No one knows this better than the Kansas Jayhawks of the . They paid for memberships for everyone connected to their men’s and women’s basketball programs. Bill Self has always been a favorite at our annual clinic and Brandon Schneider is a Texan. Add to the mix Larry Tidwell, now Brandon’s assistant and it’s no wonder that Kansas has more TABC members than any school on any lev- el. We appreciate all who support Texas basketball no matter where they hang their hoops.

Coach Jody Sory passed away on February 16 in Henderson, Texas. He was 75. A memorial service will be held on Saturday February 22 at the South Main Church of Christ at 11:00 am with visitation at 9:30.

TEXAS BASKETBALL LOSES ANOTHER LEGEND

After a long battle with health problems Don Coleman passed away on Sunday, February 9 at his home sur- rounded by his loving family. He was 87. Last November a life size statue of Don was unveiled before a crowd of former players, colleagues, family, fans and friends. The statue stands inside the entrance to the Spring Branch Community Coliseum, which bears his name and where many of his 893 varsity wins took place. After a 5 year stint at Aldine HS where his team made the state tournament, Don opened Sprig Branch ISD’s Memorial HS where he guided the Mustangs for the next 30 years. Memorial made 4 more trips to the final four winning the state championship in 1966. From 1964 until 1971 Don’s Mustangs won 81 consecutive district games and his teams had 26 straight seasons of 20 or more wins. In addition to playing basketball in college, Don was an All-American tennis player at Lamar University and during the off season he taught les- sons and competed in tennis tournaments into his 60s. Coach Coleman was an important part of the develop- ment of TABC, serving as president in 1987-88 and initiating the clinic move from Waco to San Antonio. In addition to the SBISD Community Coliseum, many scholarships and awards bear his name. Don was a special friend to all who knew him, on and off the basketball court. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary Kay, his 4 children and numerous grandchildren. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to the Don Coleman Scholarship Fund at the Spring Branch Education Foundation or the charity of your choice. Former Alamo Heights Coach Charlie Boggess and his son Clay spent many years togeth- er on the bench during basketball games. Clay played for his dad at Alamo Heights and had been on the bench with him ever since he was very young. Clay is currently an assis- tant coach at San Antonio St. Mary’s Hall, and Charlie is an assistant coach at San Anto- nio Central Catholic. So, during a recent game between the two schools the Boggess’ spent a game for the first time sitting on opposing benches. Pictured are Charlie and Clay Boggess prior to the game. West Hardin Coach Kenny Hoffpauir recently reached a career milestone winning his 700th varsity game. Here he is pictured celebrating with members of his Oilers team. TABC Roundball Roundup—Page 9 Garza Selected to RGV Sports Hall of Fame

Recently retired coach, Rolando Garza from San Isidro High School was selected to the RGV Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2020 and will be inducted in June. He spent the entirety of his 27-year career in San Isidro – the first two as the Lady Tigers’ coach. His long list of accomplishments includes 12 District championship, 20 playoff appearances, six area championships and regional quarterfinalists, and three regional semifinal appearances. He was selected District Coach of the Year 12 times. While coaching the Tigers in his last year 2018-19, he also coached the Lady Tigers after the unexpected death of the girls’ coach. His career record was 607-256, a .703 winning percentage. Alief ISD Names Elsik South Gym for Laura Dawson

Alief ISD dedicated the Laura Dawson Gymnasium during a ceremony at Elsik High School on January 21st. Coach Dawson made four trips to the final four including three in a row, winning the state champi- onship in 1998. She is a member of the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame and is pictured with her former players as she receives a plaque from former player and Alief ISD assistant athletic director Marla Brumfield. TABC Roundball Roundup—Page 10 Krum Names Gym Floor for Troy Hamm

Krum ISD recently dedicated its gym floor as the Coach Troy Hamm Court. Coach Hamm won three state championships at Krum, served as president of TABC, and has been inducted into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame. Pictured with Coach Hamm are a Krum school board member and current Krum head coach Doug Boxell and his assistant Travis Marmon. Buxkemper Honored at Ballinger

On Friday, January 17 Ballinger HS had a ceremony where they honored longtime coach Robert Buxkemper. The Bearcats were playing the Reagan County Owls that night so Reagan County coach Ken Campbell was in attendance. Also in attendance was Jack Baucom, retired longtime coach at Cole- man and Plains. Baucom retired with over 800 wins, Buxkemper retired with over 600 wins, and Camp- bell passed the 600 win mark this season. Pictured are the three coaches who combined for over 2000 wins.
