Kyle Martin put the Goldeyes in front 1-0 with a solo home run in the bottom of the third. Martin then hit a grand slam in the fourth that made it 5-0. Martin collected his sixth RBI of the night on a single in the sixth. Later in the inning, Kevin Lachance’s two-out, RBI single stretched the lead to 7-0. Goldeyes’ starter Eduard Reyes picked up the win, pitching 8.0 shutout innings on four hits. Reyes walked two and struck out eight. Martin’s grand slam was his third of the season, which ties an American Association record set by former Goldeye Willy Garcia in 2019. ALL-TIME AGAINST THE MILKMEN: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 12-13 all-time against the Milwaukee Milkmen, including an 8-7 record in home games, and a 5-1 record at Shaw Park. The Milkmen won the 2020 American Association championship, finishing in first place in the regular season with a 34-26 record, and then beating the Sioux Falls Canaries four games to one in the American Association Championship Series. Milwaukee was 38-62 during its expansion season in 2019. The Milkmen opened Franklin Field on June 24 th , 2019 with a 3-2 loss to the Gary SouthShore RailCats before earning its first official home win the following night over Gary SouthShore, 8-2. The facility is located in Franklin, Wisconsin, a suburb of downtown Milwaukee, and also plays host to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (Panthers) baseball team. Inclement weather during the winter of 2019 led to construction delays, and the Milkmen played their first 14 home games at Kokomo Municipal Stadium in Kokomo, Indiana. Kokomo is home to the Northwoods League’s Kokomo Jackrabbits, a college summer wood bat team under the same ownership group as the Milkmen. The Milkmen went 7-7 during the games at Kokomo. Anthony Barone returns for his second season as Milkmen manager, and became the first rookie manager to pilot an American Association club to a championship in 2020. Barone served as Milwaukee’s bench coach in 2019. Barone previously managed the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League’s (PGCBL) Jamestown Jammers from 2015-18, winning a championship in 2018. Barone was named PGCBL Coach of the Year in both 2017 and 2018. SERIES MATCHUP: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 37-35, in fourth place in the American Association North Division, and 9.0 games behind the Milwaukee Milkmen. The Goldeyes just swept a three-game series from the Sioux City Explorers at Shaw Park. The Goldeyes are fourth in the American Association in batting average (.287), 10 th in pitching (5.81), and tied for fourth in fielding (.979). The Milwaukee Milkmen are 46-26, in first place in the North, and 3.0 games ahead of the Chicago Dogs. The Milkmen just won two of three from the Kane County Cougars at Northwestern Medicine Field. The Milkmen are ninth in the league in batting (.266), first in pitching (4.31), and tied for fourth in defence (.979). This is the third of four head-to-head series this season between Winnipeg and Milwaukee. The Goldeyes were 4-5 against the Milkmen in 2020. TONIGHT’S STARTERS: The Goldeyes go with rookie PROJECTED UPCOMING PITCHING MATCHUPS right-hander Landen Bourassa who is 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA 8/10 at CHI: TBA vs. TBA in three starts this season. Bourassa picked up his first 8/11 at CHI: TBA vs. TBA career win on Tuesday vs. Sioux City, allowing three 8/12 at CHI: TBA vs. TBA unearned runs on four hits in 6.0 innings. Bourassa walked two and struck out four. Bourassa just finished his college career at the University of San Francisco (San Francisco, California) where he was 7-4 with a 2.88 ERA in 15 starts for the Dons as a sixth-year senior. Bourassa pitched four seasons at San Francisco from 2018-21, combining for a 16-9 record and a 2.93 ERA in 34 games, all of them as a starting pitcher. Prior to arriving at San Francisco, Bourassa pitched two seasons at Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon. Today will be Bourassa’s first career appearance against Milwaukee. Bourassa is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in one career start at Shaw Park. The Milkmen go with right-hander Ryan Zimmerman who is 7-4 with a 3.78 ERA in 14 starts this season. Zimmerman picked up the win at Kane County on Tuesday, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in 6.0 innings. Zimmerman walked one and struck out five. Zimmerman is tied for third in the American Association in wins, seventh in ERA, tied for sixth in strikeouts (87), and ninth in innings pitched (81.0). Zimmerman has allowed three or fewer earned runs in 12 of his 14 starts this season. Zimmerman has pitched at least 6.0 innings in 10 of his 14 starts this season. Zimmerman was 4-4 with a 5.64 ERA in 12 starts for the St. Paul Saints in 2020 and finished 11 th in the American Association with 58 strikeouts. Zimmerman helped the Saints win the 2019 American Association championship, going 7-3 with a 4.16 ERA in 17 starts and six relief appearances during the regular season. Zimmerman then posted a 1.46 ERA in two postseason starts, and started the clinching Game Three of the American Association Championship Series vs. Sioux City on September 14 th . Zimmerman played four seasons of college baseball at the University of St. Thomas (St. Paul, Minnesota) where he was a combined 16-8 with a 3.04 ERA in 180.1 IP from 2015-18. Zimmerman is in his fourth season of professional baseball, and is 20-13 lifetime with a 4.86 ERA in 62 games, 54 of them as a starting pitcher. Zimmerman has averaged 8.6 strikeouts per nine innings as a professional. Zimmerman is 6-1 with a 4.19 ERA in seven career starts against Winnipeg. Zimmerman is 2-1 with a 6.23 ERA in three career starts at Shaw Park. GOLDEYES RETURN HOME: The Winnipeg Goldeyes returned to Shaw Park on Tuesday, August 3 rd with a 14-6 win over the Sioux City Explorers. It marked the Goldeyes’ first official home game since September 2 nd , 2019, which was a span of 701 days. A total of 20 games over 19 home dates were added to the remaining schedule. AMERICAN ASSOCIATION POSTSEASON FORMAT ADJUSTED: On August 4 th , the American Association announced an expanded playoff format. The top three teams in each division by winning percentage will now qualify for the postseason. The second- and third-place teams in each division will meet in a one-game playoff. The winner of the playoff game will face the winner from their own division in a best-of-five Division Series. The Division Series winners then meet in a best-of-five American Association Championship Series. The format originally called for the top two teams in each division qualifying and immediately meeting in the Division Series. GOLDEYES ACQUIRE MAJOR LEAGUER: The Winnipeg Goldeyes acquired former Major League left-hander Donnie Hart from the Atlantic League’s Gastonia Honey Hunters on Monday in exchange for left-handed pitcher Jose Jose. Hart pitched four seasons in the Major Leagues from 2016-19, compiling a 3.13 ERA in 89.0 innings over 98 relief appearances. Hart also made a scoreless appearance in the 2016 American League Wild Card Game while pitching for the Baltimore Orioles. Hart was 2-2 with two saves and a 3.48 ERA in 22 relief appearances for Gastonia this season. GOLDEYES ADD DOUBLE-A CATCHER: The Winnipeg Goldeyes signed catcher Deon Stafford on Tuesday. Stafford appeared in 20 games in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ organization earlier this season, including 14 for the Double-A Northeast’s Altoona Curve. Stafford was voted an All-Star in both 2017 (Short Season-A New York Penn League’s West Virginia Black Bears) and 2018 (Low-A South Atlantic League’s West Virginia Power). Stafford is a lifetime .251 hitter in four professional seasons, and has thrown out 23 percent of opposing base stealers during his career. EXTRA, EXTRA: Through 72 games, the Winnipeg Goldeyes are first the American Association in doubles (155), and rank third in triples (21). The Goldeyes are on pace for 216 doubles and 30 triples. The franchise records in those categories are 206 doubles in 2011 and 30 triples in 1999. STEADY PRESENCE: Goldeyes’ infielder Raul Navarro had a career-high 18-game hitting streak end on July 16 th at Fargo-Moorhead. Navarro has also had streaks of nine and 14 games this season. Navarro has hit safely in 56 of 71 games this season, and has reached with a hit, walk, or hit by pitch in 65 of them. RUN PRODUCER: Goldeyes’ first baseman Kyle Martin is tied for first in the American Association with 84 RBI. Since July 1 st , 2019, Martin has 185 RBI in his past 193 games as a member of the Goldeyes.
