  • An Introduction to the Theme of World Meeting of Families 2018 Pastoral
An Introduction to the Theme of World Meeting of Families 2018 The theme for each World Meeting of Families is chosen by the Pope. In choosing The Gospel of the Family: Joy for the World, as the theme for the ninth World Meeting of Families in Dublin, Ireland, Pope Francis invites us to reflect on a theme that was central to the Synodal process that led to his post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia: On Love in the Family. ‘The Church and The Gospel of the Family’ was a key theme in the Preparatory Document for the III Extraordinary Assembly of Bishops in October 2014, a document that was the subject of unprecedented consultation among the faithful of the Church across the world. While the preparatory document does not give a specific definition of the term, ‘The Gospel of the Family’, it does convey at least three senses in which this relatively new phrase in the Church’s tradition can be understood: • The family, founded on the marriage of a man and woman, is part of God’s plan from the beginning. The ‘Good News’ of the family is therefore an indispensable part of the joyful message of the Gospel that the Church proclaims. • The family is the principal agent of evangelisation of its own members. As the first school of faith and love, the Christian family is often where we ourselves first come to know Jesus and his love. • The family proclaims the Gospel to the World. The Christian family, by its witness to the life and love of Jesus, is a principal agent of evangelisation to the world.

‘The cardinal who brings poetry to the faith’ quotes from cardinal Charles Maung Bo We should never be discouraged. Never give up! Life is rowing against the current. Do not give up when the changes in the country are too slow. Listen again to the words of Isaiah as you remember your own times of hopelessness. ‘You shall no more be termed forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed desolate…You shall be called by a new name…You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord.’ Cardinal Bo. See p.8 Cover image: Cardinal Charles Maung Bo Photo: Freddy Lynn, The White Legend Media, Myanmar Cover quote: La Stampa, 7 January 2015 Introduction His Eminence Cardinal Charles Maung Bo, Archbishop of Yangon (Rangoon) since 2003, became Burma/Myanmar’s frst ever Cardinal in 2015, and has long been one of the most outspoken voices for human rights, religious freedom, inter-religious harmony, peace and justice in the country. Upon his appointment as Cardinal, he told the media, “I want to be a voice for the voiceless”. A profle in La Stampa headlined ‘The cardinal who brings poetry to the faith’ described him as one who “speaks like a poet but his evangelical message covers the economy, society and politics”. Cardinal Bo has played a key role in his country’s struggle for freedom. In his Easter message in 2014, he said “The task of Christians is to move fences, to tear down walls.” His country, he said, has been through “our way of the Cross for the last fve decades”.

Wester has urged Catholics to hold off celebrating the Christmas season until it officially begins on the Church calendar on Dec. 24. In his first pastoral letter as Salt Lake City’s bishop, he urged the state’s Catholics to keep true to the spirit of Bishop John C. Wester Advent—a season of preparation which he said has been “neglected in many places,” and often “overshadowed by the holiday season.” The bishop, who was installed in 2007 as the shepherd of the statewide Catholic diocese, noted that in the rush and busyness of the Christmas season, many people miss out on its true meaning. “By the time that the actual solemnity of Christmas arrives, many of us are burned out. We are already tired of all the ‘Christmas hype.’ Christmas has become anticlimactic,” A frightening football injury to Nick Schnell, center, led many people in the Indianapolis Catholic community to pray for him after the Oct. 17 incident. he wrote. Following his recovery, he posed for a photo with his mother, Angie Schnell, and Kevin Watson, his fifth-grade teacher at St. Roch School in Indianapolis. Issued on Nov. 24, the letter is titled “Waiting in Joyful Hope.” It was published in the diocesan newspaper, Intermountain Player’s football injury brings Catholic Catholic, which is online at www.icatholic.org.

SONS OF DON BOSCO SUCCESSORS OF THE APOSTLES SALESIAN BISHOPS 1884 to 2001 by Charles N. Bransom, Jr. INTRODUCTION he study of apostolic succession and episcopal lineages has long fascinated students of church history. It was not until the middle T of the twentieth century, however, that a systematic attempt was made to trace and catalogue the consecrations of bishops on a world-wide basis. A small group of researchers has catalogued the consecrations of tens of thou sands of bishops dating back many centuries. The fruits of their labors--labors that are on going-have resulted in a database, which can trace the episcopal lineage of any living bishop and the vast majority of deceased bishops. In 1984, I began a project on the episcopal ordinations of bishops of re ligious orders and congregations. One fruit of that work was a study of the ordi nations of Salesian bishops, Les Eveques Salesiens. The present work updates, corrects and expands the 1984 study. In 1984, the episcopal ordinations of 130 bishops were presented. This study contains the details of 196 bishops. The text has been expanded to include the episcopal lineages of the bishops. Of the 196 bishops in this study, 183 trace their orders to Scipione Re biba, who was appointed Auxiliary Bishop ofChieti in 1541. The Rebiban suc cession is the major episcopal line in the contemporary Catholic episcopate. More than 91 % of the more than 4,500 bishops alive today trace their orders 54 Journal of Salesian Studies back to Rebiba Why so many bishops should trace their lineages to this one bishop can be explained, in great part, by the intense sacramental activity of Pope Benedict XIII, who consecrated 139 bishops during his pontificate, many of them cardinals, nuncios and bishops of important sees who in tum conse crated many other bishops.

  • Press Release - May 13, 2021
Press Release - May 13, 2021 After eighty-three years, Hungary can once again host the International Eucharistic Congress (IEC). According to the original plans, the world event would have been held in September 2020. Last year, however, due to the pandemic, Pope Francis, having consulted the Pontifical Committee for International Eucharistic Congresses and the Hungarian organizers of the Catholic world event, decided to postpone the event to autumn 2021. In the history of the Congresses since 1881, only the two World Wars had caused involuntary interruptions. This is the first time that a worldwide epidemic has thwarted the event. “What does it mean to celebrate a Eucharistic Congress in the modern and multicultural city, where the Gospel and the forms of religious affiliation have become marginal?” asked Pope Francis when welcoming the organizers of Eucharistic World Congresses. He then made the following wish: “May the Budapest Eucharistic Congress foster processes of renewal in Christian communities, so that the salvation whose source is in the Eucharist will find expression in a Eucharistic culture capable of inspiring men and women of good will in the fields of charity, solidarity, peace, family life and care for creation.” The events of the 52nd International Eucharistic Congress: Theological Symposium, Esztergom Between September 2 and 4, 2021, Esztergom will host the Theological Symposium, a scientific research conference to precede the 52nd International Eucharistic Congress. The event will feature lectures by Hungarian and foreign (both European and overseas) theologians on the Eucharist and its adoration. The event is subject to registration and ticket purchase. Joint Concert in the Synagogue As part of the Jewish-Christian dialogue, a joint concert will be given on September 4, in the Dohány Street Synagogue by the Solti Chamber Orchestra, the Albertfalva Division of the Budapest Singing School, the ETUNAM Mixed Choir, András Gábor Virágh, as well as László Fekete, Péter Dobszay, and Dániel Rudas.
