Rather than a 1" solid bar to a point, I cut a 3/4" wide piece of 3" angle iron, hot pinched it in a and forged it to a flat point. The resulting wedge was made in two heats and rises to 1" tall over a distance of 3 1/2". The sides can flare out or be kept parallel as seen in the photo below. One could use this means to achieve a gradual taper as well and avoid the expensive cast iron wedges found at welding stores. No need to set up a to slowly cut wedges out of large solid stock either. This is a great way to your hammer control, as you will immediately see how your hammer strikes when looking down the point of the wedge.
