All work is requested and authorised by Alastair McVail, Ringway Jacobs, North Bucks RoW Officer, or Jon Clark, BCC Access Officer. 22/9/16 Took delivery of 7 Marlow and 3 Woodstock kissing gates from BCC/TfB at CRFC. Good chat with Greg & Bill of TfB regarding gate installation and their preferred installation method using a timber post attached to either side of a gate. Not so critical with kissing gates. 22/9/16 Stewkley. Emailed Alastair McVail re the replacement by TfB of our gate with a kissing gate at SP842264 to appease Mrs Carter. (See 9/8/16 CAMS 81198). 23/9/16 Eythrop. Emailed Jon Clark reCAMS 81845 at SP768134 completed on 3/2/16 as way marker has been knocked down again. 26/9/16 Eythrop. Received CAMS 83629 at SP768134 to rerect snapped of at ground level way marker post - hit by a vehicle. 27/9/16 Mentmore. CAMS 82567 at SP907186 on MEN/8/1 installed way mark post and bridleway way marker discs. Liaised with golf club groundsman, Adam. Two x 2.5 = 5.0 man hours. B&J. 27/9/16 Mentmore. CAMS 82569 at SP889192 and at SP892194 on MEM/15/2. Checked functioning of two timber kissing gates. First one needed timber attaching to post to prevent gate from swinging right through, second considered to be okay. -

Swanbourne History Trail BACKGROUND TO THE VILLAGE The village of Swanbourne can trace its roots back to Anglo- Saxon times. The first mention of ‘Suanaburna’ comes in a document of 792 relating to the granting by King Offa of the parishes of Winslow, Granborough and Little Horwood for the establishment of St. Alban’s Abbey. The name probably means ‘peasant’s brook’, and so originally referred to the stream which flows along the western border of the parish, rather than the village itself. At the time of the Doomsday Book in 1086, the parish was divided between 5 landholders, although one of these was extremely small. One of the major landholders was King William (The Bastard or Conqueror) who took over land belonging to King Harold. William’s half-brother the Count of Mortain also held land, and the other two major landholders were Walter Giffard and William, son of Ansculf. In 1206, much of the village lands were granted to Woburn Abbey, but following Henry VIII’s dissolution of the Abbey in 1538, the land and Overlordship of the Manor of Swanbourne was sold on to the Fortescues, then the Adams, then the Deverells and finally the Fremantles. This trail starts from The Betsey Wynne public house which was opened in July 2006. The pub takes its name from Betsey Fremantle (nee Wynne), wife of Thomas Fremantle, who was a captain in the Royal Navy and a close friend of Admiral Nelson. Thomas and Betsey, together with their new-born son, also called Thomas, moved to Swanbourne in 1798. -

Hertfordshire Way Walk 6 Aldbury and the Ashridge Estate This walk covers the section of the Hertfordshire Way from Little Gaddesden through the Ashridge Estate to Frithsden Beeches. Start: Ashridge Estate Visitor Centre Nearest Post Code: HP4 1LT OS Map Ref: SP 971131 Distance: 9.3 miles (15 km) Ascent 600 feet (185 m) Parking: Monument Drive, Ashridge The walk follows the Hertfordshire Way from the start. From Monument Drive head towards the Bridgewater monument and the Visitor Centre. Take the tarmacked path and follow it round to the left with the visitor Centre and Café on your left. The track turns to gravel and heads down into the woods. Where it forks marked Medleys Meadow Track continue straight ahead. At the next fork bear right continuing downhill signed Hertfordshire Way. Ignore a crossing bridleway and pass a red brick house on the left as the village of Aldbury becomes visible ahead. On reaching the road turn right towards the village and at the road junction head towards St John the Baptist church passing the village green and duck pond on the right and the village shop on the left. After passing the church and as the road bears left look for a footpath on the right. Go through the wooden gate and head towards the farm buildings ahead. Go through another gate to the right of the farm buildings. Continue along the edge on the field with the farm buildings on your left, ignoring a path on the right. Go through another gate, on the left in front of a large green barn. -
Age 25 Army Unit 3Rd Brigade Canadian Field Artillery Enlisted: January 1915 in Canadian Expeditionary Force
Arthur Kempster Corporal - Service No. 42703 - Age 25 Army Unit 3rd Brigade Canadian Field Artillery Enlisted: January 1915 in Canadian Expeditionary Force Arthur was born on the 8th May 1893 in Wingrave. The son of George and Sarah (nee Jakeman) Kempster, he was brought up in Crafton with 6 other children, his father was a shepherd. In 1911 he and his brother were butcher’s assistants in Wealdstone, Middlesex. He died on the 19th November 1918 from mustard gas and influenza. He is buried in Wingrave Congregational Chapel Yard and is also commemorated at All Saints, Wing. His brother, Harry Fredrick Kempster was born in Wingrave in 1890. He died on the 2nd October 1917 in Flanders, Belgium. Harry was a rifleman with the Royal Irish Rifles, 7th Battalion. Whilst killed in action, he is not mentioned on the Mentmore War Memorial. © Mentmore Parish History Group. Ernest Taylor Private - Service No. 29168 - Age 30 6th Battalion Duke of Wellington’s [West Riding] Regiment. Enlisted: Huddersfield Died July 27th 1918, in the No 3 Australian Causality Clearing station, Brandhoek. Suffered gunshot wounds to his back, forehead and neck. Buried Esquelbecq Military Cemetery III D 14. Born 1887 Cheddington, Son of William and Mary (nee Baker) Taylor Ernest married Elizabeth Kelly (nee Firth). Elizabeth was a widow with four small children. The couple met and married in Huddersfield and had a child of their own on 11th Nov 1916. Ernest had worked on a local farm in Cheddington then he moved to Huddersfield where he became a goods porter. -

APPENDIX A Wendover Local Area Forum Local Priorities 2014 Wendover Local Area Forum (LAF) invited its Youth Forum to run its local priorities process which involved consulting with residents to see if the LAF should revise its local priorities. Residents in the local area parishes (Aston Clinton, Buckland, Drayton Beauchamp, Halton, Stoke Mandeville, Wendover and Weston Turville) were surveyed and invited to rank their priorities and provide comment on the reasons behind these rankings. The local priorities budget will be allocated to the top actionable local priorities, subject to agreement by the Wendover Parish Council provided a stand at Wendover LAF, so over the next two years work Market. Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies Estate Staff General advice Records relating to domestic staff for Buckinghamshire estates are disappointingly scant at the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies. It is not entirely clear why this is the case. It may be that records like registers of employees were never drawn up. It could also be because estates were simply more assiduous about keeping records like title deeds that they valued more highly. As a result, many of our estate collections contain large quantities of deeds at the expense of other types of documents, but that doesn’t mean that no information can be found. This booklet aims to cover those records which do survive and have a specific staffing dimension. However, they are not the only items which might be helpful. Correspondence, bills, accounts etc. are all possibilities and may mention staff in some context. They are rarely comprehensively indexed in archival catalogues and will therefore require more thorough research. This extra work can be extremely rewarding. The household correspondence for the Mentmore Estate (reference D- RO/2/73) is a good example. It includes extensive correspondence from Alice Slater, a cook for Lord Rosebery, refuting allegations of wastefulness. If we hold nothing useful, it is sometimes worth contacting the relevant estate if it survives. Some estates (like the Verneys at Claydon) maintain their own archives. Bear in mind that private families have no obligation to allow you to inspect their records, they may refuse access or charge you a fee to do so. -

Foreword Dacorum benefits from a tremendous resource of high quality parks and recreation areas, set within some of the most remarkable landscapes in the country. Our fantastic green spaces are one of the main reasons people choose to live, work, and visit here. This strategy sets out our commitment to manage and protect this legacy, to ensure it remains intact for current and future generations. The quality of some of Dacorum’s green spaces has deteriorated over time through the ageing of facilities and infrastructure, and new investment is required. This strategy gives us the impetus and tools to improve their quality and to help deliver what local communities want from their neighbourhoods. We will improve facilities, and encourage residents to become more involved in managing their local green spaces. We aim to balance the needs of the community with the demands on our service, working wherever possible to combat climate change and alleviate the pressures of the modern age. We have a number of challenges to face in the future, not least in providing enough homes for the community. This strategy provides a strong framework to help manage, refresh, and create new green spaces. -

Summer Moths
The group of members at Holtspur who had just been clearing scrub, refreshing the information boards, clearing the footpath of obstructions, removing seedling shrubs from the ‘wrong place’ and planted them into the central hedge and the windbreak on Lower Field, clearing dogwood from Triangle Bank, making a small scallop into the top hedge, checking wobbly posts and making repairs to the fencing. Peter Cuss Peter Cuss I will be pleased to see the spring (which seems very slow to arrive this year) for a variety of reasons. One, is to relax after the large number of work parties. I haven’t kept a list of the number of the tasks we attended in previous winters but this year we advertised and we had members working at 46 conservation tasks. As a group of people that love butterflies and moths (and therefore cherish the places in which they live) we can take pride and feel relief, that our expertise has positively influenced the management of those places. Our volunteers have acted to halt, and hopefully reverse, the decline in numbers and their efforts have been magnificent. Furthermore, I haven’t included events such as Elm tree planting (by small groups of members), the nurturing of seedlings by many members, the preparation of display board information for our reserve and a number of other largely individual acts which took place during the same winter season. -

Aylesbury Vale North Locality Profile Prevention Matters Priorities The Community Links Officer (CLO) has identified a number of key Prevention Matters priorities for the locality that will form the focus of the work over the next few months. These priorities also help to determine the sort of services and projects where Prevention Matters grants can be targeted. The priorities have been identified using the data provided by the Community Practice Workers (CPW) in terms of successful referrals and unmet demand (gaps where there are no appropriate services available), consultation with district council officers, town and parish councils, other statutory and voluntary sector organisations and also through the in depth knowledge of the cohort and the locality that the CLO has gained. The CLO has also worked with the other CLOs across the county to identify some key countywide priorities which affect all localities. It is a very rural locality in the north of Buckinghamshire. There are officially 63 civil parishes covering the area (approximately a third of the parishes in Bucks). There are 2 small market towns, Buckingham and Winslow, and approximately 70 villages or hamlets (as some of the parishes cover more than one village). Population The total population of the Aylesbury Vale North locality (AV North) is 49,974 based on the populations of the 63 civil parishes from the 2011 Census statistics.
