Elective Metaphysical Affi nities: Emerson’s “Natural History of Intellect” and Peirce’s Synechism Afi nidades Eletivas Metafísicas: A “História Natural do Intelecto” de Emerson e o Sinequismo de Peirce David A. Dilworth Philosophy Department State University of New York at Stony Brook – USA [email protected] Abstract: The paper suggests that Peirce’s late-phase metaphysical system af- termathed Emerson’s basic philosophical ideas elaborated over four decades before him. Peirce, with characteristic brilliance, transformed Emerson’s own luminous ideas into his categorial elaborations of abduction, cosmogonic synechism, universal semiosis, and the like. To illustrate this process of transformation, the paper provides a running synopsis of Emerson’s last signifi cant writing, “The Natural History of Intellect” (1870), which was ori- ginally part of a team-taught lecture series at Harvard that Emerson shared with six others, one of whom was the young C. S. Peirce. The synopsis evidences that virtually all of Peirce’s major metaphysical tenets had their precedent in Emerson. Among other places, Peirce acknowledged Emerson’s infl uence (together with that of Schelling) in his 1892 essay, “The Law of Mind.” Even before that, he referenced Emerson’s poem “The Sphinx” in his “A Guess at the Riddle” of 1887-88, the turning-point in Peirce’s career towarde metaphysical speculation. Peirce’s conscious awareness of Emerson’s philososphy and poetry traces back to many sources (including Emerson’s long friendship with his father, Benjamin Peirce). The elective affi nity be- tween his and Emerson’s views allows us to appreciate that the two authors forged a central strain of idealistic-cum-realistic metaphysical thinking that framed the later Pragmatisms of James and Dewey, among others. -

Relations in Categories Stefan Milius A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Graduate Program in Mathematics and Statistics York University Toronto, Ontario June 15, 2000 Abstract This thesis investigates relations over a category C relative to an (E; M)-factori- zation system of C. In order to establish the 2-category Rel(C) of relations over C in the first part we discuss sufficient conditions for the associativity of horizontal composition of relations, and we investigate special classes of morphisms in Rel(C). Attention is particularly devoted to the notion of mapping as defined by Lawvere. We give a significantly simplified proof for the main result of Pavlovi´c,namely that C Map(Rel(C)) if and only if E RegEpi(C). This part also contains a proof' that the category Map(Rel(C))⊆ is finitely complete, and we present the results obtained by Kelly, some of them generalized, i. e., without the restrictive assumption that M Mono(C). The next part deals with factorization⊆ systems in Rel(C). The fact that each set-relation has a canonical image factorization is generalized and shown to yield an (E¯; M¯ )-factorization system in Rel(C) in case M Mono(C). The setting without this condition is studied, as well. We propose a⊆ weaker notion of factorization system for a 2-category, where the commutativity in the universal property of an (E; M)-factorization system is replaced by coherent 2-cells. In the last part certain limits and colimits in Rel(C) are investigated. -

Abstract This communication is a chronological short history of Western art (mainly paintings) from Prehistory to the contemporary period through the word “Soil”. The conclusion is that the vision of Soil (in a scientific meaning), as an independent work of art, is recent. Key Words Soil, landscape, Western art, paintings. It is widely accepted that humans always have considered the natural environment a subject of great interest to art. Early pictorial examples include cave paintings done by Cro-Magnon man during the Upper Palaeolithic, about 30,000-40,000 years ago. However the vision of Soil (in a scientific meaning), as an independent work of art, is recent and still extremely rare in the world of painting. For many years, artists have depicted actual or imaginary landscapes from which the trained eye of a pedologist, agronomist or geographer can recognise a schematic view of what is commonly called soil but not Soil (as a Soil profile). This communication will: (i) show representations of Soil or soil in Western Art from the Palaeolithic to the modern era, and (ii) show some recent artworks where the Soil is considered as the main subject, and has as its goal to present Soil in art from Genesis (the Bible) to Pedogenesis (the scientific approach of the Soil formation, from the Greek word Pedon meaning soil) [1, 2]. -

KEITH LEHRER REPRESENTATION IN PAINTING AND CONSCIOUSNESS Representation in the arts is a creative process of reconfiguring a subject, real or imagined, to yield some original content or inten- tional object. The first question about representation is – what is the question about representation? Gombrich (1972), Wollheim (1980), Goodman (1968), Walton (1990), and Lopes (1996), have offered us diverse theories of representation in the visual arts. They all contain interesting ideas and insights, but the diversity of theories suggests that they may be asking and answering different questions. Moreover, that should not surprise us at all, for the painter, as well as other artists have diverse goals, and one of those goals is to change our conception of representation, to modify and challenge the conventions and constraints of representation. Lopes (1996), for example, suggests that the fundamental form of representation is depiction, demotic picturing, that would enable one to recognize and identify the object depicted. We are indebted to Lopes for this important proposal, but demotic picturing may be opposed to artistic representation. The artist may start with the external subject as the stimulus to find some meaning, some feeling or emotion, some insight or idea, and so reconfigure and repattern what he or she has seen into something that has some new internal meaning or content. The stimulus for a painting, a model, for example, need not be depicted or be what the painting is about The content of a painting is one thing, and the model is something else. A painter is sometimes indifferent to producing a demotic picture of the model or subject, which has caused difficulties between famous portrait painters and those they portrayed, when what interests the artist is the reconfiguration or the reinterpretation of the model or subject. -

We begin with a conceptual framework that explicitly distinguishes between the direct cost effect of a price overcharge and the subsequent indirect pass-on and output effects of the overcharge. We then discuss alternative methods to quantify these various components of damages, ranging from largely empirical approaches to more theory-based approaches. Finally, we discuss the law and economics of price-fixing damages in the United States and Europe, with the focus being the legal treatment of the various components of price-fixing damages, as well as the legal standing of the various groups harmed by collusion. 1. Introduction Economic damages can be caused by various types of competition law violations, such as price-fixing or market-dividing agreements, exclusionary practices, or predatory pricing by a dominant firm. Depending on the violation, there are different parties that may suffer damages, including customers (direct purchasers and possibly indirect purchasers located downstream in the distribution chain), suppliers, and competitors. Even though the parties damaged and the amount of the damage may be clear from an economic perspective, in the end it is the legal framework within a jurisdiction that determines which violations can lead to compensation, which parties have standing to sue for damages, and the burden and standard of proof that must be met by plaintiffs and defendants. -

Wikipedia is the largest collaborative encyclopedia and is used as the source for DBpedia, a central dataset of the LOD cloud. Wikipedia contains numerous numerical measures on the entities it describes, as per the general character of the data it encompasses. The DBpedia In- formation Extraction Framework transforms semi-structured data from Wikipedia into structured RDF. However this extraction framework of- fers a limited support to handle measurement in Wikipedia. In this paper, we describe the automated process that enables the creation of the Chaudron dataset. We propose an alternative extraction to the tra- ditional mapping creation from Wikipedia dump, by also using the ren- dered HTML to avoid the template transclusion issue. -

The article explains the digital translation process through the adaptation of various aspects of Charles Sanders Peirce’s philosophy such as the triadic sign model, signification, fallibilism and synechism. Semiotics, or the ‘study of meaning making’, highlights the subjective nature of data analysis. A semiotic approach not only explains the differing realities of digital and material space and the lack of distinction between digital and material phenomena, but also provides further insight into algorithmic determinations of reality and the inherent limitations on our knowledge of digital or material reality. The same data can produce divergent realities within digital space and between the material and digital spaces. The article concludes that the design of algorithms, the nature of their representations and the outcomes they generate lack the complexity and nuance of reality, and disregards social influences on meaning and interpretation. As illustrated by the real-life failure of Centrelink’s OCI, this article warns against interpreting the digital as an accurate rendering of the real. To protect against social engineering attacks, a fundamental work is to know what constitutes social engineering. This paper first develops a domain ontology of social engineering in cybersecurity and conducts ontology evaluation by its knowledge graph application. The domain ontology defines 11 concepts of core entities that significantly constitute or affect social engineering domain, together with 22 kinds of relations describing how these entities related to each other. It provides a formal and explicit knowledge schema to understand, analyze, reuse and share domain knowledge of social engineering. Furthermore, this paper builds a knowledge graph based on 15 social engineering attack incidents and scenarios. 7 knowledge graph application examples (in 6 analysis patterns) demonstrate that the ontology together with knowledge graph is useful to 1) understand and analyze social engineering attack scenario and incident, 2) find the top ranked social engineering threat elements (e.g. the most exploited human vulnerabilities and most used attack mediums), 3) find potential social engineering threats to victims, 4) find potential targets for social engineering attackers, 5) find potential attack paths from specific attacker to specific target, and 6) analyze the same origin attacks.
