CHAPTER 13 BELTS AND PINS AS GENDERED ELEMENTS OF CLOTHING IN THIRD AND SECOND MILLENNIA MESOPOTAMIA Cécile Michel Cuneiform texts include many words linked to textile terminology which highlight varieties of materials, weaving techniques and regional peculiarities. During the third millennium and the first half of the second millennia BCE, forms of clothing were rather simple in the Near East, including tunics and wrap around garments for both men and women. Texts from this period do not make clear gender distinctions, presumably because tailored garments are still rare and reserved to the elite. The iconography, often subject to conventions in representations, gives an idea of the shape of clothing at different times. -
Principles of Design
Principles of Design Balance Proportion/Scale Emphasis Rhythm Introduction The principles of design are essential to the development and production of clothing used by individuals and families around the world. Each principle has a specific role in creating an aesthetically pleasing garment or ensemble. The principles of design consist of: balance, proportion (also referred to as scale), emphasis, and rhythm. When a garment or ensemble uses the elements and principles of design to create a visual unity, harmony is achieved. Garments often integrate more than one principle, while drawing from the elements of design to create a cohesive look. The following discussion will present background information on each of the principles of design and applications to clothing design and construction. Balance According to Wolfe (2011) balance implies that there is an equilibrium or uniformity among the parts of a design (p. 205). To achieve balance, a garment or ensemble should have equal visual weight throughout the design. The use of structural features, added embellishments, or decorations to a garment contribute to the appearance of a garment or ensemble being balanced or not. A clothing designer can utilize surface designs on fabric to construct a garment creating visual balance. Further, color, line, and texture can impact the balance of a design. For example, cool and light colors have less visual weight than dark, warm colors. If an individual is wearing a small amount of a dark, warm color it can be balanced out with a larger amount of cool, light colors. Balance used in clothing design can be categorized into two groups: Formal and Informal Balance. -

Volume 13: Issue 2 Belt Grinders and Everyday Work By Doug Workman, APF, CJF A belt grinder is one tool that I, and most of the farriers I know who use them, will not live without. When you consider the tasks that you can perform with a grinder, only your hammer, anvil and forge are more important. My goal is to give you ideas for what you can do with a belt grinder in your everyday work if you are unfamiliar with them; or maybe give you a new idea you can use with your own. I use expander wheels everyday so I will start by covering their use and safety. Most of this information can be applied with any style belt grinder you may use. The expander wheels come in two sizes - 10" and 6" models. The 10" wheel turns the fastest and is the most aggressive at removing material. The 6" wheel gives a smaller radius that is great for dressing tools or precise grinding. First, expander wheels must turn in the proper direction or the belt will not stay on. They come with an indication arrow showing the proper direction of rotation they must turn. Secondly, you must have the safety guard on and in the proper position (refer to photo). Having the guard in this position keeps the sparks from burning you and anything Above: else that may be nearby, as well as making sure you are using Baldor the proper section of the wheel while grinding. Journal of Fashion Business Vol. 14, No. 6, pp.188~203(2010) A Study on the Design and Composition of Victorian Women’s Mantle * Lee Sangrye ‧ Kim Hyejeong Professor, Dept. of Fashion Design, TongMyong University * Associate Professor, Dept. of Clothing Industry, Hankyong National University Abstract This study purposed to identify the design and composition characteristics of mantle through a historical review of its change and development focusing on women’s dress. This analysis was particularly focused on the Victorian age because the variety of mantle designs introduced and popularized was wider than ever since ancient times to the present. For this study, we collected historical literature on mantle from ancient times to the 19 th century and made comparative analysis of design and composition, and for the Victorian age we investigated also actual items from the period. During the early Victorian age when the crinoline style was popular, mantle was of A‐ line silhouette spreading downward from the shoulders and of around knee length. In the mid Victorian age from 1870 to 1889 when the bustle style was popular, the style of mantle was changed to be three‐ dimensional, exaggerating the rear side of the bustle skirt. In addition, with increase in women’s suburban activities, walking costume became popular and mantle reached its climax. With the diversification of design and composition in this period, the name of mantle became more specific and as a result, mantle, mantelet, dolman, paletot, etc. were used. The styles popular were: it looked like half-jacket and half-cape. Ornaments such as tassels, fur, braids, rosettes, tufts and fringe were attached to create luxurious effects. -
The Dress Code for Women at Shanti Bhavan, Like Many
The dress code for women at Shanti Bhavan, like many places throughout rural South India is relatively conservative: absolutely no shoulders, no cleavage, looser clothing (ie. no leggings and no tight tops) and nothing above the knees. Female Teachers’ Typical Clothing Many professional women wear kurtas, or long dresses with high slits at the sides which are paired with leggings or pants. Kurtas are also often worn with scarves that are draped across the shoulders as a display of modesty. This article of clothing is often worn by teachers, as it is often considered to be casual yet appropriate in the workspace. One important thing to note is that men also wear kurtas in India: in fact, traditionally women would wear the female version called kurtis while men wore kurtas. However, the term kurta is often used for the clothing article that both men and women wear. Volunteers and teachers are often recommended to wear kurtas while at the school—although wearing a kurta is not compulsory. In lieu of wearing kurtas, typically business-casual styles of dress (as long as they adhere to the rules of no exposed shoulders, cleavage, or knees) is acceptable. You will often see volunteers wearing trousers with a blouse, or long skirts paired with both a blouse and scarf.
