71 “New Caledonia 1698-1700: Scotland’s Twice-Lost Colony” Ignacio Gallup-Díaz, Bryn Mawr College “Lost Colonies” Conference, March 26-27, 2004 (Please do not cite, quote, or circulate without written permission from the author) This paper explores the manner in which the troubled relationship between Scotland and England played itself out in the arena of imperial expansion in the Americas. How did Scotland, a nation-state attempting to free itself from its problematic relationship with a mightier southern neighbor, act upon the colonial stage it had chosen in the Darién region of eastern Panamá? How did a nation-state that occupied the subject position in a colonial relationship itself perform as a colonizer? Informed by David Armitage’s persuasive description of the elements that differentiated the Scottish vision of empire from English expansionist thinking,1 the paper sets out to discover whether Scottish sailors, soldiers and settlers-- the individuals acting on the front lines of the nation’s expansionist effort-- interacted with the Darién’s Tule2 people in a manner that also distinguished them from their English competitors. 1. When something is written down in a manuscript or a book, there is a standard against which other versions can be compared or corrected. Since the emergence of writing, political, social and religious institutions have privileged written records over oral memory and tradition. This has had a huge influence on the survival and evolution of the Scots language. Having lost its role as a contemporary written language in the 17th century, Scots continued to thrive as a spoken tung. This led to Scots often being associated with aspects of culture that were not sanctioned by authority, or explicitly dissident. To gie tung or ‘raise your voice’ could be seen as anti-authority, an expression of cultural resistance and human freedom. Consequently, people were told to curb or haud their tungs. And the forms of punishment administered by local courts included restraining the tongue, as for example with a Scold’s Bridle. -

George Mackay Brown and the Scottish Catholic Imagination Scottish Religious Cultures Historical Perspectives An innovative study of George Mackay Brown as a Scottish Catholic writer with a truly international reach This lively new study is the very first book to offer an absorbing history of the uncharted territory that is Scottish Catholic fiction. For Scottish Catholic writers of the twentieth century, faith was the key influence on both their artistic process and creative vision. By focusing on one of the best known of Scotland’s literary converts, George Mackay Brown, this book explores both the Scottish Catholic modernist movement of the twentieth century and the particularities of Brown’s writing which have been routinely overlooked by previous studies. The book provides sustained and illuminating close readings of key texts in Brown’s corpus and includes detailed comparisons between Brown’s writing and an established canon of Catholic writers, including Graham Greene, Muriel Spark and Flannery O’Connor. This timely book reveals that Brown’s Catholic imagination extended far beyond the ‘small green world’ of Orkney and ultimately embraced a universal human experience. Linden Bicket is a Teaching Fellow in the School of Divinity in New College, at the University of Edinburgh. She has published widely on George Mackay Brown Linden Bicket and her research focuses on patterns of faith and scepticism in the fictive worlds of story, film and theatre. The project focuses on the effects in Scotland of the development of the new media of film and wireless. It addresses question as to what changes, over the first decades of the twentieth century, these two revolutionary forms of public technology effect on the established entertainment system in Scotland and on the Scottish experience of culture. The study presents a broad view of the cultural scene in Scotland over the period: discusses contemporary politics; considers established and new theatrical activity; examines the development of a film culture; and investigates the expansion of broadcast wireless and its influence on indigenous theatre. -

Ian Brown, editor, The Edinburgh Companion to Scottish Drama (Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press, 2011); Trish Reid, Theatre & Scotland (Houndmills: Palgrave Macmillan, 2013) Alan Riach What might be described as the conventional wisdom about Scottish drama is summed up in the first two sentences of chapter 10 of Marshall Walker’s book, Scottish Literature since 1707 (1996): ‘There is no paucity of Scottish theatrical heritage, but there is a shortage of durable Scottish plays. Drama is the genre in which Scottish writers have shown least distinction.’ It is a judgement that has been perpetuated over generations but only relatively recently has the necessary scholarship and engagement been advanced, by both academics and theatre practitioners, to interrogate the assumptions that lie behind it. Walker refers to ‘the circumstances of theatrical history’ and questions of suppression and censorship, the Reformation, the removal of the court to London in 1603, the Licensing Act of 1737, and concludes his introduction to the chapter by saying that despite familiar references to Allan Ramsay, John Home, Joanna Baillie, and the vitality of folk, music-hall and variety theatre, nothing much happens between Sir David Lyndsay in the sixteenth century and the ‘return’ of Scottish drama in the twentieth century. Most of his chapter then goes on to discuss incisively and refreshingly the achievements of J.M. Barrie, James Bridie and John McGrath but the context he sketches out is barren. As a summary, there is some brutal truth in this, but as an appraisal of the whole complex story, there is much more to be said, and much more has been discovered and made public in the decades since Walker’s book appeared. -

The collection includes scripts, photographs, press cuttings and other items of theatre and television memorabilia. Edith Macarthur’s stage career has taken her to most major producing theatres in Scotland, and to many in England. The variety of her range is demonstrated in the collection, from her early days with respected amateur company, the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Players, to acclaim with prestigious companies such as the Royal Lyceum, Citizens’, Gateway, Bristol Old Vic, Pitlochry Festival, Traverse and Royal Shakespeare. Leading roles in the canon of major plays by Arthur Miller, James Bridie, Anton Chekhov, Eugene O’Neill, Noel Coward and their like, and various acclaimed productions of ‘The Thrie Estaites’, established her stage reputation. Alongside runs a vein of comedy and variety, from the ‘Five Past Eight Shows’ of the 1950s at the Citizens’, to regularly playing Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother in pantomime during the 1980s and 1990s. There is also a considerable body of television work, from early series such as ‘The Borderers’ and ‘Sutherland’s Law’, and the renowned 1970s adaptation of ‘Sunset Song’, to the long-running Scottish Television soap, ‘High Road’. A milestone was the 1993 film ‘The Long Roads’ by John McGrath. At about this time Miss Macarthur was coming to the attention of less mainstream theatre-producers in Scotland. -

Editorial: On the study and promotion of drama in Scottish Gaelic Sìm Innes (University of Glasgow) and Michelle Macleod (University of Aberdeen), Guest-Editors We are very grateful to the editors of the International Journal of Scottish Theatre and Screen for allowing us the opportunity to guest-edit a special volume about Gaelic drama. The invitation came after we had organised two panels on Gaelic drama at the biennial Gaelic studies conference, Rannsachadh na Gàidhlig, at the University Edinburgh 2014. We asked the contributors to those two panels to consider developing their papers and submit them to peer review for this special edition: each paper was read by both a Gaelic scholar and a theatre scholar and we are grateful to them for their insight and contributions. Together the six scholarly essays and one forum interview in this issue are the single biggest published work on Gaelic drama to date and go some way to highlighting the importance of this genre within Gaelic society. In 2007 Michelle Macleod and Moray Watson noted that ‘few studies of modern Gaelic drama’ (Macleod and Watson 2007: 280) exist (prior to that its sum total was an unpublished MSc dissertation by Antoinette Butler in 1994 and occasional reviews): Macleod continued to make the case in her axiomatically entitled work ‘Gaelic Drama: The Forgotten Genre in Gaelic Literary Studies’. (Dymock and McLeod 2011) More recently scholarship on Gaelic drama has begun to emerge and show, despite the fact that it had hitherto been largely neglected in academic criticism, that there is much to be gained from in-depth study of the genre. -
