LAST GAME — Jan. 2 (St. Louis 3 at Colorado 7) Nathan MacKinnon had a goal and three assists, Samuel Girard added four helpers and the Avalanche beat the Blues, 7-3, at Pepsi Center. Nazem Kadri scored twice for the Avs, who out-shot St. Louis 42-27 and converted three times with the man advantage.

• The Avs fired over 40 shots-on-net for the fourth straight game, a franchise record. They topped the previous mark of three straight games with 40+ shots done on two previous occasions: Jan. 28–Feb. 2, 2006 and Jan. 31–Feb. 3, 1996. • Colorado's three power-play goals were a season high and marked the second straight game they've tallied multiple goals with the man advantage. Colorado is 5-for-9 (55.6%) on the power play in its last two outings and 7-for-20 (35.0%) over its last five. • MacKinnon's 62 points moved him into third in the NHL scoring race and equaled the most by an Avalanche player at the team's halfway point. • Girard's four points were a career high and he tied a franchise record for assists by a defenseman in a single game. • Cale Makar scored his ninth goal of the year, one shy of the franchise rookie record for a defenseman. The goal was his fourth game-winning tally of the season, which set a new franchise record for a rookie blueliner (previous: 3 by Aaron Miller, 1996-97). • Joonas Donskoi tied his career high with his 14th goal, matching his total in 2018-19 and 2017-18 with San Jose. • Colorado’s 22 shots in the second period were a season high for a period.

TONIGHT The Avalanche opens a three-game road trip tonight in New Jersey against the Devils. The Avs will play a back-to-back in Long Island on Monday and in Manhattan on Tuesday.

MILESTONE Nazem Kadri will play his 600th NHL game tonight.

HALFWAY HOME The Avalanche hit the halfway point of the season (41 games) following Thursday's 7-3 victory over the Blues. Colorado matched its third-most wins (24) and sixth-most points (52) at the midway point of the season.

NOTES Nathan MacKinnon had two points (1g/1a) in the Dec. 13th victory after leading the Avs with five points (1g/4a) in two games against the Devils last year ... Gabriel Landeskog scored a hat trick in last year's meeting here in Newark ... Prior to relocating to New Jersey, the Devils were the Colorado Rockies for six seasons from 1976-82 ... Will Butcher was drafted by Colorado in 2013 (fifth round, 123rd overall) ... Philipp Grubauer is 3-0-0 with a 1.67 GAA and .933 Sv% in three career starts against New Jersey.

HIGH-SCORING ATTACK The Avalanche are the NHL's highest-scoring team, averaging 3.68 goals-per-game. Colorado's 151 goals overall are tied with Toronto for the most in the league. The Avs lead all teams in first-period goals (49) and rank second in second-period tallies (58).

ALL-STAR CAPTAIN REACHES 60-POINT PLATEAU; TIES AVS MIDPOINT SCORING MARK Nathan MacKinnon ranks third in league scoring with 62 points (25g/37a), equaling the most points by an Avalanche player at team’s halfway point (41 GP). MacKinnon was named the Central Division’s captain for the 2020 NHL All-Star Game. MacKinnon is the first Avalanche player to be named All-Star captain twice (Joe Sakic wore the 'C' once) and the first Avalanche player to be selected to four consecutive All-Star Games since Peter Forsberg was chosen for six straight from 1996-2001.

ALL HAIL CALE Cale Makar leads all rookie defensemen with 31 points (9g/22a) in 33 games. Makar is the first defenseman to record his first 30 career regular-season points in 33 games or fewer since Nicklas Lidstrom in 1991-92 (33 GP). In fact, he is just the eighth defenseman to accomplish that feat in NHL history.

THAT'S A PLUS Ryan Graves' +29 plus/minus rating ranked second in the NHL as of Friday. It's the highest plus/minus ever by a Colorado player at the team's halfway point of the season (41 games), topping the +23 shared by Adam Foote in 2002-03, Joe Sakic in 2000-01 and Curtis Leschyshyn's in 1995-96. Graves has been a "plus player" in 21 of his 40 contests and has been a "minus" only five times. He had a streak of eight consecutive games with a "plus" from Nov. 27–Dec. 11, the longest run by an Avalanche player since Peter Forsberg from Jan. 2-15, 2004 (also eight) and the longest by a Colorado defenseman since Adam Foote from Feb. 19–March 5, 1996 (eight).

IN WITH THE NEW Offseason additions Nazem Kadri (15), Joonas Donskoi (14) and Andre Burakovsky (13) all rank among the Avalanche's top four goal scorers this season. The trio has accounted for 42 (or 28%) of the club's goals this year. All three forwards rank among the Avalanche's top-six point producers as well, as they've picked up 81 points (42g/39a) in 41 games.

YOU HAD TO BE A BIG SHOT Nathan MacKinnon ranks second in the NHL with 191 shots. MacKinnon, who led the NHL with a franchise-record 366 shots last season, has a shot in 192 consecutive games, the second longest active streak (Dougie Hamilton 288). Nathan led all players with 79 shots in November, which included a career-high 12 on Nov. 1 vs. Dallas, tying the single-game franchise record set by Gabriel Landeskog on Jan. 9, 2019 at Calgary.

ONE MONTH AT A TIME The Avs posted a 7-5-2 record in December, finishing with their third straight "winning" month after going 8-2-2 in October and 8-6-0 in November. The last time the Avalanche started a season with three straight months above .500 was in 2010-11.

BENCHMARKS The Avalanche on Dec. 28 became the second Western Conference team to surpass the 50-point mark, doing so in their 39th game. Colorado reached 50 points before its 40th game for the sixth time since moving to Denver. The Avs finished with their third-highest points percentage at the NHL holiday break (.662, 23-11-3). Colorado's 49 points at Christmas equaled its second-most at the break. The Avs were the first Western Conference team to reach 20 wins on Dec. 11 (31st game), becoming the third-fastest Colorado team to reach 20 victories (27th game in 2013-14, 28th in 2000-01). The Avalanche reached the 40-point mark in their 29th game on Dec. 7, surpassing 40 points in less than 30 contests for just the third time since relocating to Denver (26th game in 2000-01, 27th in 2013-14).

PAIR OF STREAKS The Avalanche posted a season-best nine-game point streak (8-0-1) from Nov. 27 to Dec. 13. The Avs, who also had an eight-game point streak earlier this year (7-0-1 from Oct. 3-19), are one of two teams to record two different point streaks of at least eight games this season (Boston is the other).

WORLD JUNIORS Defensemen Bowen Byram (Canada) and Danila Zhuravlyov (Russia), forward Sampo Ranta (Finland) and goaltender Justus Annunen (Finland) are competing in today's semifinals at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship in the Czech Republic. Annunen ranks second among netminders in save percentage (93.60). Ranta and Zhuravlyov both have two assists in five games, while Byram has one helper in five contests. Byram was the fourth overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft. Annunen (64th overall) and Ranta (78th) were both third-round picks in 2018, while Zhuravlyov was taken in the fifth round (146th) that year. Danila is participating in his second straight WJC after helping Russia win the bronze medal last year.

WORKING OVERTIME Nathan MacKinnon has two OT winners this season and eight in his career, one behind Milan Hejduk for the most in franchise history. The single-season club record is three, a mark already tied by MacKinnon in 2017-18.

THE MORE THE MERRIER Four different Colorado goaltenders have earned a win in 2019-20, making this just the second Avalanche team to feature four different goaltenders with a victory in a single season (2005-06). No other NHL team has had four netminders record a win this year.

THIS DAY IN AVS HISTORY Jan. 4, 2016 – Jarome Iginla became the 19th player in NHL history to score 600 goals in Colorado's 4-1 victory over the Kings at Pepsi Center.
