ข่าวอียิปต์ประจาสัปดาห์ที่ 4 เดือนมีนาคม 2558 1. Housing Ministry requests construction companies build 60,000 residential units The Ministry of Housing, represented by the New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA), has requested that construction companies take over the building of 60,000 proposed housing units. The construction of the houses forms part of the social housing project, the “one million residential units “, according to the ministry’s statement Sunday. The units will be implemented in eight new cities, and the actual implementation will start in the next fiscal year 2015/2016. NUCA Vice-President Kamal Fahmi said 10,000 units will be built in 6th of October City, for the benefit of Giza citizens. Fahmi added that another 13,000 units of the project have been completed by the armed forces through a UAE grant in 6th of October City. These will be proposed for reservation during the next month. Fahmi noted that 50,000 housing units will be proposed in the 10th of Ramadan City in Sharqeya governorate, 15th of May City in Cairo governorate, New Damietta in Damietta governorate and Upper Egyptian cities. “In Upper Egypt cities, housing units will be proposed with an area of 70 metres, two rooms and a hall, according to the desire of governors, and will be fully finished and provided with all facilities,” Fami said. “NUCA is moving ahead with the implementation of the one million residential unit project to meet all the low-income citizens’ needs.” Fahmi said proposing small units of space, which will have space for two rooms instead of three, is to reduce the unit’s price on the citizens, which will help reduce monthly payments.

This has motivated urban microclimate research in Egypt. The main objective was initially to improve outdoor thermal comfort. Therefore, Egyptian research started with assessing different existing patterns for the sake of climate responsive and sustainable urban design practice characterized with low carbon, thermal comfort and energy efficiency in such a hot arid conditions. That is why the review workflow of this article has followed a design progress workflow that led to solving design complexities with regard to generating housing urban forms on a microclimate basis rather than an article regular review workflow in order to extract the research gaps and conclude insights.

  • Challenges for Cycling and Walking in New Cities in Egypt, Experience of Elsheikh Zayed City
JOURNAL OF ENGINEERING AND APPLIED SCIENCE, VOL. 66, NO. 6, DEC. 2019, PP. 703-725 FACULTY OF ENGINEERING, CAIRO UNIVERSITY CHALLENGES FOR CYCLING AND WALKING IN NEW CITIES IN EGYPT, EXPERIENCE OF ELSHEIKH ZAYED CITY 1 T. ELSERAFI ABSTRACT Although cycling and walking are considered as green modes of mobility, the urban planning of the new cities in Egypt is encouraging the vehicular use dependency more than cycling and walking. The urban planning model in these cities; such as the 6th of October or Elsheikh Zayed city, is depending on low density residential areas with many urban open areas. Such model increases the distances of the inhabitants’ journeys from their houses to services and other activities. In addition to the long distances, the streets and sidewalks are not designed properly for the cycling and pedestrian movement. Therefore, people living at these cities are mainly using private cars or public transportation for their daily movement, depending on their social level. Recent actions have been taken and implemented to enhance the cycling and pedestrian movement environment, but the car use dependency is still very high. This paper illustrates the situation of the cycling and pedestrian movement at Elsheikh Zayed City and the influence of the urban planning on the people behavior in mobility choice. Moreover, this paper focuses on the recent actions implemented in this concern and how much effective they are. KEYWORDS: Mobility Green Modes, Cycling, Pedestrian, and Elsheikh Zayed City. 1. INTRODUCTION The urban planning of the new cities in Egypt is western oriented towards car dominant model. From another point of view, a sustainable mobility in cities should consider other choices including pedestrian, cycling and public transportation.
