The Land of Israel’s Loyalty to the Jewish People by Rabbi Chaim Jachter As Parashat Behukotai and the book of Vayikra draw to a close, Hashem delivers a stinging rebuke and warning to our people. This rebuke, known as the Tochahah is the first of two such rebukes in the Humash (the second being towards the end of Sefer Devarim). This section contains a series of frighteningly prophetic descriptions of the tragedies that will befall the nation should they fail to follow God’s ways. Indeed, so frightening is this Tochachah that Torah is read this section in a lower voice. There are even some synagogues where the rabbi or Torah reader is called for the Aliyah that contains the Tochachah, as some would rather avoid being called for this Aliyah. In the midst of the very dark cloud of these warnings of punishment and exile in Parashat Behukotai we find a silver lining. The Torah promises (Vayikra 26:32) that after our people will be exiled from our land, our enemies will fail in their endeavors to settle the land. Ramban, writing in the twelfth century, notes that this is an extraordinary promise to us as there is no other place on earth that at one time was settled, lush and fertile but is now utterly desolate and destroyed. He observes that this promise has most obviously been fulfilled in that from the time we left our land, it has not accepted any other nation, despite their many efforts to develop the land. Indeed, the Romans, Arabs, Crusaders and Ottomans failed miserably in their efforts to settle the land of Israel. -

Roman Road from Liwius to Esbus (Fig. 10) To trace the Roman road from Livias (modern Ten er-Rameh) in the Jordan Valley to Esbus (the Greek-Latin designation for Biblical Heshbon), a survey team of four was commi~sioned.~ Long known but never completely traced, this Roman road connected Jerusalem, Jericho, Livias, and Esbus, thus linking the road system of Palestine with the famous north-south uia nova of Trajan in the Roman province of Arabia, east of the Jordan (where Esbus/ Heshbon is situated ) .2 Just as Trajan's north-south "new road" was built ( A.D. 111-114 ) along the course of the much older Biblical "King's Highway" (Num 20:17; 21:22; cf. Gn 145, 6),3so the east-west road, from Jericho to Heshbon, was built near, if not always along, the Biblical "Way of Beth-Jeshimoth" (see the 'Hebrew text of Jos The survey team was to trace the Roman road from Esbus to the Jordan Valley and to obtain an archaeological picture of the occupational sites near Tell Hesbdn, with special emphasis on the large valley, the Wadi Hesbdn. He earned his PhD from Union Theological Seminary. Dr. Cockerill has served with his wife, Rosa, for nine years as a missionary in Sierra Leone, West Africa. Dr. Cockerill has written numerous articles and book reviews for such journals as Tyndale Bulletin, Bulletin for Biblical Research, Journal of Biblical Literature, The Evangelical Quarterly, Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society, Interpretation, and Missiology. He had already promised to bless Abraham, to make him a great nation, and to bless the world through him (Gen 12:2-3). The land would be the place that gave concrete shape to fulfillment. Through distrust and disobedience Adam and Eve have usurped God’s lordship over their lives and thus forfeited the divine presence, disrupted the harmony of human community derived from that presence, and suffered exile from Eden the place of blessing. Heshbon (Modern Hesbdn) Is Located in Transj Ordan
THE HISTORY OF HESHBON FROM LITERARY SOURCES * WERNER VYHMEISTER River Plate College, Puiggari, Entre Rios, Argentina Heshbon (modern Hesbdn) is located in Transjordan, about 20 miles east of the Jordan where it enters the Dead Sea. The remains of the old city are covered now by two hills, 2,930 and 2,954 feet above sea level respectively. According to the latest available statistics (from 1961), the village of Hesbdn has 718 inhabitants. Heshbon in OT Times Heshbon appears for the first time in the Biblical record as the capital city of Sihon, the Amorite king defeated by Moses. However, the region in which Heshbon was located is mentioned much earlier in the Bible. In Gn 14:5, Chedor- laomer and his confederates appear as smiting successively the Rephaim in Ashteroth-karnaim, the Zuzim in Ham, and the Emim in Shaveh Kiriathaim (i.e., the plain of Kiria- thaim). Kiriathaim has been identified with el-Qerei ydt, about five miles northwest of Dhz'bdn. Mayes Much of the Mosaic legislation contained in the Pentateuch seems foreign to the modern reader. The laws concerning the priesthood, the sacrificial system, and the religious holidays are neither practiced nor paralleled in the dispensation of the church. Though they do have didactic and illustrative value as types of the work of Christ, they are often rushed over or skipped altogether in personal Bible study. The Old Testament legislation concerning so-called moral law has received greater attention. Since it addresses many issues which are also social problems in the twentieth century, it is frequently lifted from its Old Testament context and applied to contemporary society. Provisions for dealing with cases of adultery, homosexuality, theft, and murder in Israel are a few of the regulations which commonly receive such treatment. Several minority political/religious groups even advocate a complete return to Old Testament-style political regulations and policies. It is within the context of this debate that the Old Testament legal provisions concerning the city of refuge should be studied. These cities were designated locations to which one who was guilty of accidental homicide1 could flee in order to receive legal protection and a fair trial. Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, chief of the country, saw her and took her and forced her to lie with him. (Genesis 34:1-2) BACKGROUND: The narrative of the rape of Dina takes place immediately after Jacob and his family have returned to Jacob’s ancestral home in Canaan. We learn from the text that Dina goes out to “see the daughters of the land” and is raped by Shechem the Hivite, who then requests that she become his wife. Dina’s brothers are outraged to hear that their sister had been raped. The brothers trick the Hivites, promising that if the Hivites agree to be circumcised, then Dina and the daughters of Israel will be available to them. One the third day, when the Hivites were in pain from having been circumcised, Simeon and Levi snuck up on the Hivites and killed all the men of the city. When Jacob complained that Simeon and Levi’s actions would bring trouble to the house of Jacob, the sons answered, “Should our sister be treated like a whore?” The text raises many questions, most poignantly perhaps, why Dina is victimized by Shechem. -

Without underestimating the significance of security and conflict within the structure of the Israeli state, in this thesis the Arab–Jewish relationship is viewed as just one important cleavage within the Israeli state. Instead of focusing on this single cleavage, this thesis explores the complex structure of cleavages at the heart of the Israeli political system. It introduces the concept of a ‘cleavage pyramid’, whereby divisions are of different saliency to different groups. At the top of the pyramid is division between Arabs and Jews, but one rung down from this are the intra-Jewish divisions, be they religious, ethnic or political in nature. In the case of Shas, the religious and ethnic elements are the most salient. The secular–religious divide is a key fault line in Israel and one in which ultra-orthodox parties like Shas are at the forefront. They and their politically secular counterparts form a key division in Israel, and an exploration of Shas is an insightful means of exploring this division further, its history and causes, and how these groups interact politically. -
Three Conquests of Canaan
ÅA Wars in the Middle East are almost an every day part of Eero Junkkaala:of Three Canaan Conquests our lives, and undeniably the history of war in this area is very long indeed. This study examines three such wars, all of which were directed against the Land of Canaan. Two campaigns were conducted by Egyptian Pharaohs and one by the Israelites. The question considered being Eero Junkkaala whether or not these wars really took place. This study gives one methodological viewpoint to answer this ques- tion. The author studies the archaeology of all the geo- Three Conquests of Canaan graphical sites mentioned in the lists of Thutmosis III and A Comparative Study of Two Egyptian Military Campaigns and Shishak and compares them with the cities mentioned in Joshua 10-12 in the Light of Recent Archaeological Evidence the Conquest stories in the Book of Joshua. Altogether 116 sites were studied, and the com- parison between the texts and the archaeological results offered a possibility of establishing whether the cities mentioned, in the sources in question, were inhabited, and, furthermore, might have been destroyed during the time of the Pharaohs and the biblical settlement pe- riod. Despite the nature of the two written sources being so very different it was possible to make a comparative study. This study gives a fresh view on the fierce discus- sion concerning the emergence of the Israelites. It also challenges both Egyptological and biblical studies to use the written texts and the archaeological material togeth- er so that they are not so separated from each other, as is often the case. -
