Boston’s Neighborhood Museum New Exhibit Revives Spirit of Legendary Old Howard Theatre FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 10, 2019 Boston, MA—On Tuesday, September 24, The West End Museum premieres a new exhibit, “The Old Howard Theatre,” in celebration of Boston’s oldest and best-loved playhouse, which stood in the heart of Boston’s Scollay Square just steps from the old West End. The Howard’s origin, glory days, and ultimate demise are recounted through photographs, artifacts, and graphic panels. The show reception takes place on Thursday, October 17 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Concurrent programs—a film screening, an author talk and an evening of burlesque music—complement the show, which runs through February 15, 2020. The exhibit and reception are free; concurrent programs require admission for non-Museum members. (Media note: Find reception and program details on the following pages, download hi-res show images here.) “Scollay Square and the Old Howard will always be connected to the history of the West End,” said Duane Lucia, the Museum’s executive director and exhibit curator. “By the 1950s, the Old Howard had become synonymous with vice and ‘burly,’ and like the West End, a symbol of a bygone Boston deemed by the powers that be as incompatible with the vision of the ‘New Boston’ and urban renewal.” Once a tabernacle for a doomsday sect, the building became a playhouse in 1845 only to burn down a few months later. Funds from a local brewery financed the construction of a new Gothic-like building, which opened its doors in October 1846. -

Robert C. Allen quoted an 1890s letter from the first burlesque star of the American stage, Lydia Thompson in Horrible Prettiness: Burlesque and American Culture (1991): “[B]urlesque as she knew it ‘has been retired for a time,’ its glories now ‘merely memories of the stage.’”1 In 1931, Bernard Sobel opined in Burleycue: An Underground History of Burlesque Days, “Alas! You will never get a chance to see one of the real burlesque shows again. They are gone forever…”2 In 1938, The Billboard published an editorial that began, “On every hand the cry is ‘Burlesque is dead.’”3 In fact, burlesque had been declared dead so often that editorials began popping up insisting it could be revived, as Joe Schoenfeld’s 1943 op-ed in Variety did: “[It] may be in a state of putrefaction, but it is a lusty and kicking decomposition.”4 It is this “lusty and kicking decomposition” which characterizes the published history of burlesque. Since its modern inception in the late nineteenth century, American burlesque has both been framed and framed itself within this narrative of degeneration. -

Ronald Davis Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts
Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts in America Southern Methodist University The Southern Methodist University Oral History Program was begun in 1972 and is part of the University’s DeGolyer Institute for American Studies. The goal is to gather primary source material for future writers and cultural historians on all branches of the performing arts- opera, ballet, the concert stage, theatre, films, radio, television, burlesque, vaudeville, popular music, jazz, the circus, and miscellaneous amateur and local productions. The Collection is particularly strong, however, in the areas of motion pictures and popular music and includes interviews with celebrated performers as well as a wide variety of behind-the-scenes personnel, several of whom are now deceased. Most interviews are biographical in nature although some are focused exclusively on a single topic of historical importance. The Program aims at balancing national developments with examples from local history. Interviews with members of the Dallas Little Theatre, therefore, serve to illustrate a nation-wide movement, while film exhibition across the country is exemplified by the Interstate Theater Circuit of Texas. The interviews have all been conducted by trained historians, who attempt to view artistic achievements against a broad social and cultural backdrop. Many of the persons interviewed, because of educational limitations or various extenuating circumstances, would never write down their experiences, and therefore valuable information on our nation’s cultural heritage would be lost if it were not for the S.M.U. Oral History Program. Interviewees are selected on the strength of (1) their contribution to the performing arts in America, (2) their unique position in a given art form, and (3) availability. -

Lorence n Grant County, New Mexico, a lonely corner ofa forgotten place, events I ofthe 1950S dramatized the anticommunist hysteria ofthe early postwar era. In 1950 the Bayard, New Mexico, Local 890 ofthe International Union ofMine, Mill, and Smelter Workers (Mine-Mill) struck against the Empire Zinc Corporation over economic, social, and safety issues. In this small worker community far from the modern industrial city, the union took steps to influence the definition ofcommunity and the pattern ofgender relations in ways that would alter the social structure and challenge the distribution of power in the emergentcorporate state. -

Two Infamous Homewreckers Meet in the New Stage Play, “The Duchess and the Stripper” The Duchess of Windsor, Wallis Simpson, and the premier burlesque dancer of her time, Blaze Starr meet in the new stage play, “The Duchess and the Stripper,” making its world premiere in the Hollywood Fringe Festival in June 2019. The play takes place in 1961 Baltimore, at the Two O’Clock Club, the famous strip club owned by Blaze Starr. These two women who outwardly have nothing in common, in fact, shared a number of similar experiences. Their reactions to those events vary greatly due to their upbringing and yes, their social standing. The play has attracted great talent. The director, Ezra Buzzington, is not only a veteran of stage and screen, but co-founder of the New York Fringe Festival. “It has some of the wittiest dialogue I’ve read in years. I really wanted to be a part of it.” Playing the Duchess, Wallis Simpson is Miss Blaire Chandler, who’s last Fringe appearance as Big Mama in the multi-lauded Theatre of Note/TMB production of Hot Cat. Blaire is the winner of multiple drama critics’ awards across the country, and has appeared on stage in Los Angeles at The Road, Theatre of Note, Chalk Rep, and The Actors’ Gang. WENDY WHELAN-STEWART Acting Out: Gypsy Rose Lee, Burlesque Culture, and Sylvia Plath Te summer that Sylvia Plath spent in New York as a guest editor for Mademoiselle was a critical landmark in the writer’s life. Te site of her immersion in the overlapping spheres of literary culture, professional writing, and women’s fashion was the Barbizon Hotel for Women. Te hotel stood in 1953, as it does now, at the corner of the famous Lexington Avenue and 63rd Street. Just a few paces west on 63rd Street, at the Northwestern corner of the block, was the stylish apartment owned by Gypsy Rose Lee, the “literary stripper”. Te proximity of these two women to one another, rather than an intersection, is signifcant to understanding the impact that burlesque culture had on Plath’s literary career. In fact, twenty-year-old Plath’s fnal gesture to fashionable, feminine New York bears something of the burlesque: On her last night at the Barbizon, afer weeks of exhaustive performances before demanding and famous senior editors and photographers, Plath hoisted her suitcase to the roof where the other undergraduate guest editors collected. Te suitcase contained all of the complimentary clothing articles Mademoiselle had showered on Plath and her young colleagues. Before a tipsy, amused crowd, Plath “tossed each slip, stocking, sheath, and skirt into the night sky” (Winder 200). Tese garments, particularly the undergarments, held up one by one and then dropped before a crowd onto a public street, allude to the spectacle of a woman’s removing her inner and outer layers before an audience. -
