NACM Short Report 5.5 Liz Copas 2005 WATERGORE TRIAL ORCHARD NOTE This trial site no longer exists and unfortunately some of the LA Disease Resistant seedling were grubbed out. Propagating material is still available of most of the other cultivars mentioned. SUMMARY Planted 1990 Main orchard planted to double rows N/S of Major, Ashton Bitter, Ellis Bitter and White Jersey at 18 x 8 on M25. This rootctock has proved rather too vigorous for the good soil on this site. In retrospect more effort was needed to control the early growth of these trees and induce cropping. The pruning trial [NACM 95/5/1] demonstrated some response to belated pruning to centre leader and bending or tying down strong lateral branches. This has served as a useful model for other orchards of these varieties. Planted 1995 Selected early harvesting seedlings from the Long Ashton [LA 1978] breeding program; 2 bittersweet, 4 sharps and 1 sweet, planted E/W on MM 106. Poor tree shape and excessively early flowering has ruled out many of these. The best are LA 13/2 and LA 13/7, Tremletts crosses with a strong resemblance to the parent but with some resistance to scab and mildew. Both need some initial tree training but could be kept annual. Planted 1996 Selected old varieties with some potential for bush orchards were planted on MM 106 . Of these the most promising are Broxwood Foxwhelp and possibly the other Foxwhelps [all bittersharps], also Don's Seedling [bittersweet] and Crimson King [sharp] as early harvesting varieties. Both Severn Banks [sharp] and Black Dabinett [bittersweet] could make useful late harvesting varieties. -

Suggested Topics for Homebrew Con 2021 The suggestions below have been outlined by the Seminar Subcommittee for Homebrew Con 2021. The topics suggested are not intended to be an exhaustive list, but rather a guide to potential speakers to some of the top priority topics that the committee would like to see presented on at this year’s event. Hopeful speakers are welcome to submit proposals beyond the scope of these suggestions but are encouraged to keep them in mind when planning their proposal content. Beer Styles The BJCP recognizes over 130 distinct beer styles in its beer guidelines, along with countless others not in the guidelines. Each style has a unique history and characteristics and is brewed using specific brewing processes and techniques. The seminars in this track will highlight individual beer styles and the techniques used to brew them (and why). • How styles emerge (Ex: Kolsch/Alt, Regional International Ales [Argentina, Italian, New Zealand, Brazilian, etc.]) • Compare and contrast of similar styles • Differentiating general history from beer history • Emerging styles (Ex: pastry stouts/ fruit “slushies”, Winter Warmers, etc.) • How to decide where your beer goes in a competition • Saison • Bocks (history, sub-styles, brewing requirements, etc.) • How taxes, water chemistry, wars, technology and/or climate defined beer styles • Extinct (or nearly extinct) Styles • Historic beers (Ex: Stein Bier, Fraoch, Herbal, Wiccan ales, Egyptian ales) • Lager fundamentals • Best ways to educate yourself about a style - • Beer Vocabulary and what it all means ASBC (anyone?) • Belgian Styles (in general) – challenge to brew, make it taste like it’s from Belgium • How to brew authentic English Pub Ale • Fresh Hop Beers • Mead styles (Ex: Polish, historical meads, other) • How to achieve the style you are looking for (Expectations of what you want vs. -

MCA decided that when full price albums were converted to midline prices, the albums needed a new number altogether rather than just making the administrative change. In this series, we get reissues of many MCA albums that were only one to three years old, as well as a lot of Decca reissues. Rather than pay the price for new covers and labels, most of these were just stamped with the new numbers in gold ink on the front covers, with the same jackets and labels with the old catalog numbers. For homebrewers, mead is a great addition to complement your other fermented offerings. Many of your guests may have never tasted a good quality mead or melomel (fruit mead), but almost everyone enjoys this sweet beverage. Using some modern methods, mead is also relatively easy and quick to make, and you can use equipment you already have on hand for homebrewing. Point Oktoberfest, a Marzen-style lager, won the gold medal in the American-style Amber Lager category (45 entries), while Whole Hog Pumpkin Ale, a unique and extra bold spiced ale, was judged the best in the Field Beer or Pumpkin Beer category (63 entries). “A gold medal from the Great American Beer Festival represents true brewing excellence, and to win gold medals for both our fall seasonal beers is doubly exciting for our brewery,” said Stevens Point Brewmaster Gabe Hopkins. To dive in OpenSource world of mac os x we would try to install lates version of bash, bash-completion and few other utilities. Where we should start? First of all you need to install on you system dev-tools: Xcode – native development tools that contain GCC and libraries. Next step: bring a GIU – X11 into your system. Starting from Mac OS 10.8 X11 is not included in base-installation and it's need to install Xquartz(http://xquartz.macosforge.org). (April 17, 2012) ± Point Nude Beach Summer Wheat Ale has become so popular the Stevens Point Brewery has boosted production ± again. The unfiltered ale is the Stevens Point Brewery¶s largest selling seasonal beer and is expected to pour on the sales again this summer, according to Stevens Point Brewery Operating Partner Joe Martino. ³To get ready for summer, we are taking advantage of our brewery¶s increased production capacity to brew 50 percent more Nude Beach Summer Wheat than we did last year,´ he said. ³This is not the first time we¶ve increased production to keep up with demand. We are as excited as our customers are for the arrival of summer and the return of Nude Beach Summer Wheat Ale.´ Since 2009 the Stevens Point Brewery has invested approximately $3 million in new equipment and additional warehouse space to increase capacity and improve brewing efficiency. The latest expansion now being completed adds nine new fermentation/aging tanks, two bright beer tanks - more - Point Nude Beach Summer Wheat Page 2 and other equipment, increasing brewing capacity to more than 120,000 barrels per year. ³Our increased capacity gives us the flexibility to increase production of a particular brand, when necessary, and it is again necessary for Nude Beach Summer Wheat,´ Martino said.
