Fall Mid-Iowa Achievement Level Test (MIALT) Each October and April, students in grades 3-11 take the MIALT assessment in reading, math and language. The MIALT assessment is unique in that it adapts to a student’s abilities and accurately measures what a child knows and needs to learn. In addition, MIALT tests measure academic growth over time, which is independent of grade level or age. Fall MIALT achievement results again show consistent growth in student achievement. Parents receive individual student growth profile sheets at fall conferences and again at the end of the school year. The following charts use the median score for each grade level to monitor grade level growth. The median score represents the middle score where half the students are higher and half the students are lower. Using the median comparison method, the fall 2008 data shows students are performing at similar levels to the last four years. Third through eleventh grade scores for fall 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 are displayed on the charts below. Six of the nine grade levels’ Math medians matched or exceeded last year’s median scores. Johnston’s median scores are above national median scores at all grade levels. The Reading and Language charts display consistent academic achievement. In Reading, eight of nine grade levels matched or exceeded last year’s high median scores. In Language Arts, eight of nine grade levels matched or exceeded last year’s median scores. As with Math, both Reading and Language Arts medians are above the national median scores.
