Participating Countries/Regions Official invitation letters have been mailed to the Minister of Education or the Equivalent. All expenses beyond the APhO 2016 period and extra costs such as visa application fee and delivery fee will be covered by the teams. Payment Methods Some teams that have difficulties in paying by telegraphic transfer and bank draft requested us to process their payment onsite. Kindly note that the only two accepted methods of onsite payment are: (1) in Hong Kong dollars by credit card (VISA or MasterCard) or (2) cash payment in Hong Kong dollars at the counter of Bank of China at our campus, following the instructions by our staff at the APhO 2016 registration desk (Bank Opening Hours: 9am-5pm during 3-6 May 2016). Currency Exchange Foreign currency exchange stores are available at Hong Kong International Airport. You are advised to exchange currencies in advance. ATMs and banks are also available at HKUST campus. Note that banks may collect handling charges. Calculators We will provide calculators (Casio FX82MS) to all students for free. User Guide can be found at http://support.casio.com/pdf/004/GY300_Dtype_E.pdf. No other calculators are allowed during the competition. Confidentiality of the Competitions To ensure fair competitions, we ask for your understanding and count on your cooperation on the following measures. The communication devices of the students will be stored up by the organizers from the evening of 1 May until they return to their hotel in the evening of 5 May. All communications between the students and their leaders, parents, etc. from 2 May to the end of the experimental competition have to go through the student guides. They are not allowed to leave the hotel after the official activities end on 2 May and 4 May. Leaders and observers are not allowed to leave the venue discussing the competition questions until 10 pm of the same evening, nor should they communicate with the outside world. In case of emergency, the communications need to go through the organizers. The organizers will not be responsible for any medical expenses incurred by the leaders, students, observers and visitors during their participation within the Olympiad period. During APhO 2016, our onsite medical staff will provide first aid service when necessary. There is a clinic at HKUST and major hospitals near the hotels. Weather The temperature in May is around 28 °C, with occasional showers. You are advised to bring a light jacket with you as some places in Hong Kong are air-conditioned. Umbrellas will be prepared for each student, leader, observer and visitor. Electricity and Voltage The standard electrical voltage is 220 volts AC, 50Hz and Type G electrical plug is used in Hong Kong. Please be kindly reminded to bring your own travel adapters. On November 14, 2019, President Ing-wen Tsai met with those award-winning students and representatives of the trainer professors at the Presidential Palace. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education also held an award ceremony at the National Taiwan Science Education Center, at which Fan, Sun-Lu, Political Deputy Minister of Education, recognized the endeavor of the 1 award-winning students, trainer professors, as well as teacher-counselors and teaching assistants from senior high school. During his speech, Zhong-Mou Li, Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering at the National Taiwan Normal University, delivered on behalf of the trainer professors of all six subjects, mentioned that the students have established a solid foundation in their respective subjects. However, human or social issues could no longer be resolved with knowledge of a single subject, he advised that students should conduct more interdisciplinary learning at the university or postgraduate stage in the future, which would be helpful for their learning journey. At the preliminary selection stage of 2019 IMSO, a total of 9,110 senior high school students signed up to participate in various competitions of IMSO. Through the semifinal, training camp, and final stages, 45 students were selected as national representatives.

This is also one of the many activities celebrating HKUST’s 25th Anniversary. APhO is an annual international physics competition organized for high school students in Asia, modeling after the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO). It aims to advance physics education of young people and strengthen interaction and cooperation amongst Asian physics academics, as well as to train and inspire teenagers who are highly talented in physics. In APhO 2016, each participating Asian country or region sends a team of eight secondary school students to contest in the competition, and Hong Kong is allowed to send two teams of Offciating guests of the 17th Asian Physics Olympiad representatives to participate in the competition since it is the host city this year. Contestants will take one theoretical and one experimental examination in which innovative physics questions are set by academics at HKUST. HKUST is dedicated to nurturing science and technology talents. Over the years, the University has been commissioned by the Hong Kong Academy of Gifted Education (HKAGE) for many times to provide a series of enhancement courses in physics to student contestants who represent Hong Kong to take part in APhO and IPhO – nurturing 73 Gold, Silver and Bronze medalists in the two prestigious physics competitions.

    Three Gold, One Silver, Three Bronze and 1 Honorable Mention for the 17 th Asian Physics Olympiad in 2016! (Photo and Article by Chen Huei-e, Division of Academic and Vocational Senior High Education) A victory has been claimed by our national team in the 17 th Asian Physics Olympiad in 2016. A total of 26 countries and regions, which sent out a total of 193 students, participated in this competition. Our team secured 3 Golds, 1 Silver, 3 Bronzes and 1 Honorable Mention. Based on the number of gold medal won, our country ranked after China (Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia won 2 Gold, and the host country—Hong Kong—won 1 Gold). This is something remarkable! An advisory team was formed by National Taiwan Normal University to train our national team. The domestic tryout was consisted of four stages: the preliminary, semifinal, final and pre-training. There were 2,664 participants from 137 schools who attended the preliminary stage, and only eight of them managed to pass the semifinal and final to qualify for the national team. This year, our national team was led by Professor Chia Chih-ta of National Taiwan Normal University, with Professor Tsai Shang-fang of WuFeng University serving as the deputy leader. In addition, Professor Kao Hsien-chung and Fu Tsu-yi joined the team as observers. The national team left on May 1st, 2016, for this competition that was held in Hong Kong. The closing and awarding ceremony was conducted at 4:00 p.m. on May 8 th (local time). There were 26 countries and regions sending out their national team for this competition.

A total of 167 students from 23 countries and territories participated in the 2017 Asian Physics Olympiad: Australia (8), AzerbaiJan (4), Bangladesh (6), China (8), Chinese Taipei (8), Hong Kong (8), India (5), Indonesia (7), Israel (8), Kazakhstan (8), Kyrgyzstan (8), Macao (2), Mongolia (8), Romania* (6), Russia (8), Russia B* (8) Saudi Arabia (8), Singapore (8), Sri Lanka (8), Thailand (8), Turkey (8), Turkmenistan (4), UAE (5) and Vietnam (8). The number in parenthesis denotes the number of participants. * : invited as a guest team. 2. The final results of the APhO 2017 were presented to the International Board. The average of the top three contestants is 39.68, and twice of the median of all contestants is 29.8. According to the article #9 of the statutes of the APhO, twice of the median of all contestants is considered as 100%. The thresholds for all awards are 26 point for a gold medal 23 point for a silver medal 19 point for a bronze medal 14 point for honorable mention According to the above criteria, 19 gold medals, 13 silver medals, 25 bronze medals and 34 honorable mentions were awarded. 3.
