NENT Group’s Viaplay streaming service will continue to be available to Bahnhof’s 350,000 customers in Sweden as an add-on subscription, and Viaplay’s TV & Movie package will now be included in Bahnhof’s top-tier TV offering, TV Stor. In addition, Bahnhof customers can add NENT Group’s premium V film and sports channels to their subscriptions for the first time, and the recently launched V Sport Extra channel will be included in the TV Stor package. NENT Group’s Swedish channels TV3, TV6, TV8 and TV10 will remain part of all Bahnhof’s TV packages. Cable wars and business battles in broadcasting markets: implications for Internet television Karen Donders1 and Tom Evens2 Introduction Broadcasters used to depend on fairly simple revenue streams. Until the 1980s, public broadcasters derived income from government subsidies or a license fee. In some countries, this was complemented with advertising revenues as well. When private broadcasters entered European broadcasting markets, a dual „order‟ emerged in which public broadcasters‟ funding model remained fairly the same and private broadcasters depended nearly solely on advertising revenues (Donders, 2010; Michalis, 2007). Today, Internet and telecommunications players are entering broadcasting markets. Essentially, this means that the market has to be divided between many players – previously active in separate markets. Consequently, broadcasters feel the need to diversify revenues. The strive after diversification became apparent most obviously in the United States where so-called „cable wars‟ between, among others, Time Warner Cable and Fox dominated the debates on a „fair‟ revenue sharing model between broadcasters and distributors. Indeed, Fox‟s Rupert Murdoch (2009) stressed: “We will be seeking retransmission dollars from our distributors. Asking cable companies and other distribution partners to pay a small portion of the profits they make by reselling broadcast channels, the most-watched channels on their systems, will help to ensure the health of the over-the-air industry in America. We realise this is going to be a tough challenge, but we’re determined to take a leadership position in creating an economic template for the future.” (emphasis added) Eventually, Fox and Time Warner Cable reached an agreement in 2010. Although the contents of the agreement are confidential, it is said that the retransmission fee agreed to Fox amounts to nearly $1 per subscriber per month (Pepitone, 2010). -

Event Processing Applied to Streams of TV Channel Zaps and Sensor Middleware with Virtualization Pal˚ Evensen April 4, 2013 2 Abstract The last decade has seen an exponential increase in mobile computing devices, as well as an increasing adoption of sensor technology in process industry, homes and public spaces. The increasing amount of information made avail- able by such devices has led to a class of pervasive systems that require little or no user input. Smart home systems is an example of such pervasive systems. A main obstacle for application developers dealing with sensor-based systems is heterogeneity of devices and protocols. A common obstacle for end-users is the manual configuration of networked devices. Our first research contribution is a middleware that overcomes these obsta- cles: The SENSEWRAP middleware addresses the problem of heterogeneity in a smart home setting through the virtualization of hardware and services. Fur- thermore, it provides automatic network configuration and service discovery. The usefulness of pervasive systems usually correlates with their ability to perform their functions in the background, without user involvement. Instead, these systems base their actions on available information relevant to their appli- cation, e.g., they are information-driven. For information-driven systems, like smart-home systems and other perva- sive systems to be able to decide on the correct action at the right time, it is vital that the correct information is made available to them in a timely manner. A primary asset of publish/subscribe interactions is the immediate distribution of new information available to interested parties, and as such, it is a well-suited model for building highly scalable and flexible systems that are able to cope with a dynamic environment. -

Global pay TV fragments The top 503 pay TV operators will reach 853 million subscribers from the 1.02 billion global total by 2026. The top 50 operators accounted for 64% of the world’s pay TV subscribers by end-2020, with this proportion dropping to 62% by 2026. However, operators beyond the top 100 will gain subscribers over the same period. Simon Murray, Principal Analyst at Digital TV Research, said: “Most industries consolidate as they mature. The pay TV sector is doing the opposite – fragmenting. Most of the subscriber growth will take place in developing countries where operators are not controlled by larger corporations.” By end-2020, 13 operators had more than 10 million pay TV subscribers. China and India will continue to dominate the top pay TV operator rankings, partly as their subscriber bases climb but also due to the US operators losing subscribers. Between 2020 and 2026, 307 of the 503 operators (61%) will gain subscribers, with 13 showing no change and 183 losing subscribers (36%). In 2020, 28 pay TV operators earned more than $1 billion in revenues, but this will drop to 24 operators by 2026. The Global Pay TV Operator Forecasts report covers 503 operators with 726 platforms [132 digital cable, 116 analog cable, 279 satellite, 142 IPTV and 57 DTT] across 135 countries. -

Telcos to dominate Western European pay TV Reflecting the rising importance of the telcos, IPTV is gaining subscribers in Western Europe at the expense of the other pay TV platforms. IPTV overtook satellite TV in 2015 and will be approaching cable by 2024. IPTV will add 5.5 million subscribers between 2018 and 2024. Some telcos also have assets on other platforms. If all of the current proposed deals receive regulatory approval, then telcos will have 18.61 million non-IPTV subscribers by 2024. Adding the 38.72 million IPTV subscribers, telcos will control 56% of Western Europe’s pay TV subscribers by 2024.” Murray continued: “This marks a sea change for Western Europe’s pay TV sector. Pay TV is not the priority for telcos – broadband and mobile provision are at the forefront.” Western Europe will have 101.59 million pay TV subscribers by 2024. Germany will contribute a quarter of the total, followed by the UK (15%) and France (14%). Half of the 18 countries covered in the Western Europe Pay TV Forecasts report will lose pay TV subscribers between 2018 and 2024. Italy will decline the most (down by 728,000 subs) from the 1,229,000 overall losses, followed by the UK (down by 621,000). -
