District Memories

Not many new residents to the area are familiar with the fact that Hythe once boasted its own Tramway, running from Hythe to Sandgate. For a relatively small and short system, that of the Folkestone, Sandgate and Hythe Tramway Company on the south Kent coast had an interesting history. The Folkestone, Sandgate and Hythe Tramways Act of 1884 authorized the construction of the line, and the South Eastern Railway Act of 12 July 1887 authorized the railway to guarantee the interest on the capital. The first section to open was from Hythe railway station to Seabrook, Kent, to facilitate the construction of the Princes Road Parade and the sea wall designed by Sir John Goode Toast Rack Carriage outside the Hythe Imperial for the Seabrook Estate A storm between 10th and 14th February 1899 damaged the Company, was opened on May 18th 1891. tramway on Sandgate seafront. Both are designed to help Romney Marsh businesses and the local communities, and both are free. The first is an online business directory, which aims to include all businesses on Romney Marsh. Businesses can enter their own details online, whilst those looking for a local business can use the comprehensive business category index. The second is a new online events calendar for Romney Marsh. The new What's On calendar allows organisers of events to add the event details online and up to at least two years ahead. They can add attachments eg notice/poster of the event and entering the postcode of the event location produces a clickable location map when the event is made live. Both can been found at www.theromneymarsh.net The two new services have been provided with funding help from Cllr Clive Goddard's ward budget. He told The Looker: “I was really happy to give some of my ward members grant to the Romney Marsh Net website, I think they do a great job, not just supplying a service for local people and organizations, but they also promote the district via their website. Page 16 www.thelooker.co.uk Thursday 10th December 2015 St. Mary in the Marsh Parish Council NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN

This notice is to inform all residents of St. Mary’s Bay and St. Mary in the Marsh that the Neighbourhood Plan is still ongoing. The Plan was submitted to an Independent Examiner for a ‘Health Check’ with the aim of raising any matters that might prevent it from being successfully examined and progressing to Referendum. In so doing, the Health Check raised general comments that some of the Policies conflict with national or local strategic policy and it is essential that there is clear justification for this in the form of an appropriate evidence base. This is currently being worked on. Neighbourhood planning provides communities with the power to establish their own Policies to shape future development in and around where they live and work. The parish council is working towards producing a Neighbourhood Plan based on the views and aspirations of its residents. The parish council would like to take this opportunity to thank all parishioners who commented on the questionnaire and visited the open days and exhibitions. Your views are being used to formulated the plan.

A £700,000 investment in a new hangar was finished in the summer to cope with soaring demand for covered storage for light aircraft, while Bristow’s search and rescue base became operational in August. The SAR operation had directly created employment opportunities for local people, said Hani. Answering questions about the future prospects of attracting airline operators to Lydd, he explained that a comprehensive marketing campaign would be launched to sell Lydd to prospective aviation customers once work on the runway extension is started. “Our approaches to airlines in the past have always been met with the response that Lydd would only be considered as a potential new route when work to extend the runway was under way. Once we have spades in the ground we will be redoubling our efforts to get airlines and other aviation businesses to consider the case for starting holiday charter and other services from Lydd,” he added. The committee has been formed to improve links with the local community and will help to create clear communications channels with residents, businesses and others interested in the airport’s growth. Chaired by highly respected former county councillor Fred Wood-Brignall, the committee is made up of representatives of airport users, local councils, Dungeness Power Station, nearby Army firing ranges and other organisations.

FOOTBALL New Romney 2 Hawkinge Town 4 Hawkinge Town moved into the semi-final of the Weald of Kent Senior Charity Cup with a fine 4-2 win over rivals New Romney. Only a Dan Morrison goal separated the two sides at half time. Second half goals by Nathan Hardwick, Lee Winfield and Mark Childs completed the scoring for Town. The Marshmen hit back with two late goals to reduce their arrears. The match was played in wintry conditions and at the end of a fairly even first half only a single goal divided the two teams. Dan Morrison scored for Hawks direct from a corner. The ball curled into the goal mouth assisted by a strong wind. It evaded all outfield players but was caught by goalkeeper Paul Egan who was on the wrong side of the goal line. The second half was only seven minutes old when from the right a shot by Wes Foord travelled across the goalmouth and Nathan Hardwick raced in from the left and smashed an unstoppable shot into the net. Soon after goalkeeper Paul Egan picked up a back pass and a free kick was awarded in the New Romney penalty area. Lee Winfield increased the Hawks lead to three goals when from the free kick he curled the ball around the New Romney defensive wall and into the bottom right corner of the net. Continued on Page 34

Mark Childs forced a great save from Egan only minutes before scoring the Hawks fourth goal. The young striker dashed into the New Romney penalty area, slipped his marker and struck the ball to the left of Egan and into the net. With the game effectively over, Hawkinge were guilty of taking their foot off the gas a little, and New Romney took advantage of this and scored two late consolation goals.

Willesborough Athletic 7 New Romney Sunday 1 A brilliant second-half performance saw Willesborough Athletic claim maximum points in their 7-1 home win against New Romney Sunday. With the scores locked at 1-1 at half-time, the Millers went up through the gears in the second period to claim their fourth successive league win and go third in the Sunday League Division Two standings. Willesborough went ahead through Matt Jarvis only to see Jack Garner level for New Romney before half-time. Second-half substitute Matt Burdon then came on to inspire his side to victory, netting three times adding to further strikes from Michael Dryland, Craig King and a second of the morning from Jarvis.

Ashford Spartans 1 Oceans Eleven 1 Unbeaten Oceans Eleven missed out on the chance to close the gap on Division Three leaders Mersham Sports Reserves as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Ashford Spartans. Mark Read scored for the Dymchurch side, but missed out on all three points when Ben Beeble-Rogers levelled to end a run of three successive defeats for Spartans.

Rusthall 1 Lydd Town 2 Lydd Town moved up to fourth following their 2-1 triumph against Rusthall at Jockey Farm. Callum Gailee put the Rustics ahead in the eighth minute but Chris Wyles and Carlum Macleod both struck, before the break, to give the Lydders all three points.

Sutton Athletic Res 1 New Romney 1 Thanks to a Warren Smith goal, New Romney shared the points in this County League match.

Fox Sunday 4 Grasshoppers 1 Experienced striker Buster Smissen was on top form again for Fox Sunday as his brace helped the pub side to all three points in their 4-1 home win against Grasshoppers. Smissen opened the scoring with a header from man of the match Phil Redman’s long throw, before putting the Fox 2-0 ahead moments later when finishing well after running onto Adam Ready’s clever through-ball.

New Romney Sunday 0 Prince Albert 7 Top of the table Prince Albert continued their brilliant start to the campaign with a comprehensive 7-0 win at New Romney. Striker Ryan Prior grabbed five goals to take his goal tally for the season into double figures, as Albert ran riot against their promotion rivals at Station Road. Tom Brown and Danny Howland weighed in with a goal apiece to cap off a great performance that puts Stuart Pearson’s team three points clear at the top.
