Professa RAp Monday - Thursday, 6:30-8:30, Craig-Lee 252 http://350hiphop.blogspot.com/ In its rise to the top of the American popular music scene, Hip-hop has taken on all comers, and issued beatdown after beatdown. Yet how many of its fans today know the origins of the music? Sure, people might have heard something of Afrika Bambaataa or Grandmaster Flash, but how about the Last Poets or Grandmaster CAZ? For this class, we’ve booked a ride on the wayback machine which will take us all the way back to Hip-hop’s precursors, including the Blues, Calypso, Ska, and West African griots. From there, we’ll trace its roots and routes through the ‘parties in the park’ in the late 1970’s, the emergence of political Hip-hop with Public Enemy and KRS-One, the turn towards “gangsta” style in the 1990’s, and on into the current pantheon of rappers. Along the way, we’ll take a closer look at the essential elements of Hip-hop culture, including Breaking (breakdancing), Writing (graffiti), and Rapping, with a special look at the past and future of turntablism and digital sampling. Our two required textbook are Bradley and DuBois’s Anthology of Rap (Yale University Press) and Neal and Forman’s That's the Joint: The Hip-Hop Studies Reader are both available at the RIC campus store. STUDENT LIFE HOMECOMING Homecoming is a unique tradition at the University of Rhode Island celebrated by students and alumni of all ages. On a large field people, cars, trucks, and moving vans stretch for miles. Music blares in all directions. The smell of the barbecue and the sound of beer cans cracking open fills the air. There is laughter, singing, dancing, and fun. Both students and alumni anticipate this October day for months. The game begins with the recognition of past football players and marching band members. Half-time continues this support of URI students and alumni by honoring the Homecoming King and Queen, Jeremiah Stone and Melanie Mecca. These two individuals are crowned for their outstanding campus and community involvement and their upstanding personalities. Whether celebrating at the football stadium or in the field behind it. Homecoming is a memorable event for all. Sorority sisters and fraternity brothers reunite. Old friends rebuild bonds with those they have not seen in years. Recent graduates come back with their "real world" stories and relive their college experiences. Older alumni witness the remarkable changes that have occurred at the University. Homecoming reminds us all of the days long gone, but not forgotten. It keeps the memories and experiences of the University of Rhode Island alive, in triendb and family. Creep Dogg Biography: Creep Dogg was born on October, 12th 1983 in Long Beach, California. Creep Dogg grew up Ina poor lifestyle much of his life; he kept busy as a youth reading and writing poetry. During his high school years CreepDogg stayed active while writing music. As Creep fell on hard times living from house to house, he started selling drugs on the streets, and that’s where his love and passion for music began to grow. He then became one of the original members of the Hip Hop group called“Lifestyles”; the group consisted of Creep Dogg, Snoop Dogg’s brother Pretty Tony, and DJ Quiks cousin Hitman. Then as the group “Lifestyles” began to get a heavy buzz throughout California, they later signed a $75,000 dollar record deal with an independent label “OG’s To WallStreet”. The group worked with and recorded songs for A&R’s like Steve Rifkens at Loud Records. Though the album was dismantled due to theC.E.O of OG’s To Wall Street (Steve Brooks) being incarcerated due to Federal Drug charges, the group split up and went their separate ways. Afterwards Creep had a small cameo appearance in the HBO movie “Butter” in 1998, and later landed a feature on a song with Snoop Dogg for the movie soundtrack “Fakin Da Funk” in1999. Creep Dogg found that he had a calling in the music industry. When Creep realized his true potential to become a successful Hip Hop Artist, he began to pursue his journey toward his debut, known as “CREEPSHOW”.

As recently documented by NPR, 1993 proved to be an important — nay, essential — year for hip-hop. It was the year that saw 2Pac become an icon, Biz Markie entangled in a precedent-setting sample lawsuit, and the rise of the Wu-Tang Clan. Indeed, there are few other years in hip- hop history that have borne witness to so many important releases or events, save for 1983, in which rap powerhouse Def Jam was founded in Russell Simmons’ dorm room, or 1988, which saw the release of about a dozen or so game-changing releases. So this got us thinking: Is there really a best year for hip-hop? As Treble’s writers debated and deliberated, we came up with a few different answers, mostly in the forms of blocks of four or five years each. But there was one thing they all had in common: they were all in the 1990s. Now, some of this can be chalked up to age — most of Treble’s staff and contributors were born in the 1980s, and cut their musical teeth in the 1990s.
