An example of this calculation is as follows; On a 42mm wide moulding (6700 series as an example) you take the chop (or inside rebate) measurement and add the mitre on each end(the mitre amount at 45 degrees = moulding width) to get the outside measurements of the moulding. 42 + 500mm + 42 = 584mm | 42 + 700mm + 42 =784mm NEW SOUTH WALES 500mm 700mm 5 Goulburn St, Kings Park. NSW. 2148 So a 500mm x 700mm chop is actually 584mm long x 784mm long. The above chop, Ph: 02 9679 8722 Fax: 02 9679 8766 which consists of two longs and two shorts uses 2.736m of moulding. 584mm + 584mm + 784mm + 784mm = 2,736mm SOUTH AUSTRALIA Now you have your metreage, to price the chop, use the two steps below Unit 2A/38 Cavan Rd, Dry Creek. SA. 5094 Step 1: The metreage price of a moulding, $6.90 in this case, is multiplied by 1.7 which Ph: 08 8162 5462 Fax: 08 8162 5398 allows for waste, stock holding and labour. This now equals $11.73m. Step 2: Multiply the chop metreage price ($11.73) by the metres used (2.736) to get a total price of $32.09. As a point of interest, if you were to purchase 2.736m of moulding 6700 @ $6.90m, you would pay $18.88. You pay only $13.21 extra to cover the cost of holding stock, allowing for wastage and the labour to produce the chop. Chop service is the fastest growing part of our WESTERN AUSTRALIA industry. 35 Fallon Rd, Landsdale. Artwork that is seen less often can test a framer’s nerves since the particular needs and framing methods of that type of art might not come readily to mind. This is precisely why framers need to be prepared beforehand. After all, the design counter is not the place to learn about framing new type of artwork if the customer is to have confidence that the job will be done right. One such type of art is stained glass. Despite the fact that stained glass as an art has existed for 1,000 years, it’s not every day that someone brings a piece in to be framed. Japanning 101. Japanning in a Can, Easy Peasy For a full discussion on various japanning mixes, quality of finish, durability and tips and techniques for success, refer to my earlier article, Japanning, or The Art of Embracing the Arcane at www.aPlaneLife.us. I highly recommend reading this article before beginning your project to understand the various mixtures and results. Have proper expectations goes a long way toward success. At the request of some readers, this series of articles will serve as a condensed, “how-to” for japanning an antique cast iron hand plane using various japanning products and mixtures. This series will start with the easiest method, commercially available japanning mix. This article will only cover the use of commercially available Rio Grande Asphaltum Varnish, although the tips and techniques should apply equally well to another commercially available pre-mixed japanning, Old PontyPool. I have chosen to focus on the Rio Grande product as I have significant experience using it, and it is very favorably priced compared to Old PontyPool. Affordable, economically sized and delivered to your door, easy. This product delivers a very deep, rich finish. Absolutely beautiful. Rio Grande Jewelers Asphaltum Varnish is available in pint cans online for about $17.00 plus shipping. Old PontyPool is sold by the quart at around $84.00 plus shipping. A pint of asphaltum varnish should cover about 15 size 4 hand planes. Old PontyPool may have more favorable performance, I have not used it, but given a limited shelf life and the quantity sold, I believe more people will be satisfied with the Rio Grande product.

And there are many styles available to you. Traditional cope and stick, slab, or mitered construction. Raised or flat (recessed) panels. Ogee, square, or regular beads. And more…So many choices! I’d like to take a moment to help parse out the details. We’ll look at the different types of construction, the options for material, edge, bead, and panel profiles, and some other door and drawer choices that may interest you. Construction There are three main types of door construction: 1. Traditional (also known as mortised or cope and stick) 2. Mitered 3. Slab Traditional Doors A door or drawer style called “Traditional” is made of five pieces, which is why they are sometimes called “5-Piece doors” or “5-Piece drawers”. Think of this type of door as a picture frame that has a top and bottom rail (the horizontal members of the frame), a left and right stile (the vertical members of the frame) that together house a center panel (which is where the glass would be in a picture frame). For the frame, you can choose the style of the outside edge profile and the framing bead, which is the inside edge profile. Further, you can choose either a raised or flat center panel. If you choose a raised panel, then you will have to decide on the raised panel profiles from a number of options.

Damage to picture frames can occur during exhibitions, storage, and travel, and is caused by handling, hanging processes, adverse environments, neglect, and irreversible restorations. Picture frames are maintained by a variety of preservation specialists, and despite their ubiq- uity they have not become the domain of any one conservation discipline, and there is scant literature devoted to their preservation interests. This paper will focus on the analysis of 19th century American gilded picture frames, as well as preventive care, modern modifications, and restoration/conservation treatments. The talk is derived from the cumulative experience in treating frames at the Williamstown Art Conserva- tion Laboratory (WACC). The paper will address frame nomenclature and the development of popular styles and con- structions of the 19th century. It will outline ornament forms and materials, and give an overview of period gilding techniques.
