For further information or to subscribe to the Christian Research Journal go to: http://www.equip.org SYNOPSIS What's wrong with the "Faith" movement? Its leaders include many of the most popular television evangelists. Its adherents compose a large percentage of charismatic evangelical Christians. Its emphases on faith, the authority of the believer, and the absolute veracity of Scripture could appear to be just what today's church needs. And yet, I am convinced that this movement poses one of the greatest contemporary threats to orthodox Christianity from within. Through it, cultic theology is being increasingly accepted as true Christianity. This article will highlight several serious problems with the Faith movement by providing an overview of its major sources and leaders. Part Two will focus on the movement's doctrinal deviations as represented by one of its leading proponents.1 ITS DEBT TO NEW THOUGHT It is important to note at the outset that the bulk of Faith theology can be traced directly to the cultic teachings of New Thought metaphysics. Thus, much of the theology of the Faith movement can also be found in such clearly pseudo-Christian cults as Religious Science, Christian Science, and the Unity School of Christianity. Over a -

Faith Healing in Christianity and Islam: a Comparative Analysis
Faith Healing in Christianity and Islam: A Comparative Analysis A dissertation submitted to the Islamic College in collaboration with Middlesex University in accordance with the requirements of the degree of MA in Islamic Studies in the Faculty of Health and Education September 2015 Word Count: 13,550 I. Abstract This study explores the development and modalities of faith healing as manifested in Christianity and Islam. The purpose is not to inflame or take sides in the debates surrounding the phenomenon, but rather to enable each faith to learn from the experiences of the other. A further goal is to provide medical practitioners and others with a better understanding of faith healing, thereby enabling them to productively address the phenomenon within Christian and Muslim contexts. Faith healing in Christianity is not the same as faith healing among Muslims. Despite their differences, however, the two varieties share certain core principles. Identifying these is a chief aim of this paper, and the contexts within which faith healers of both religions practice also will be examined. Grounded Theory is used to analyze prior academic work on faith healing with the aim of comparing how the phenomenon is manifested in Christianity and Islam, as well as in drawing conclusions about and implications of the phenomenon with respect to conventional medical practitioners. Credible research assessing faith healing across social or religious boundaries is rare. Moreover, the academic landscape is not immune to bias and the lenses through which one might assess a work’s objectivity can be opaque. Compounding the problem, some of what exists at the popular level has been written either by enthusiasts or skeptics, casting doubt on its objectivity and limiting its utility. -

As such, her movement points to a significant gap in the historiography of American religion. In addition to documenting the history of this obscure community, I situate Marie Ogden as part of what I call the early new age of American religion, an underdeveloped part of the broader categories of metaphysical religion or Western esotericism. -

It endeavours to compass the whole of life, and to show that there are inner resources for every possible need or occasion. It stands for the power of mind in contrast with the alleged supremacy of environment. It stands for the opportunities of the present in contrast with heredity. It makes for the elimination of fear, anxiety, worry, nervousness, excitement, pessimism, unbelief. It is a vigorous gospel of health and healing. It is constructive, positive, optimistic; believes in the supremacy of the good, the triumph of ideals, the development of productive individuality. Its clue to the spiritual life is found through meditation, realization, service through emphasis on inner peace and poise; and it fosters belief in the immediate, immanent presence of God as our Father-Spirit. Thus challenging the attention as a philosophy of the inner life which can be applied to all problems and needs, the New Thought has not yet borne the test of definition, comparison, and systematization. -

Evans, ca. mid-late 1880s] Of all of the protagonists in the larger Quimby-Eddy debate, the most widely misunderstood person surely must have been Warren Felt Evans, who was commonly known by his many books as Rev. W. F. Evans.3 We know today of ten books by Evans, ranging from the years 1860 to 1886, along with an unpublished manuscript of over 400 pages, ca. 1883, now in the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland.4 The conventional wisdom of writing on the history of mental healing portrayed Evans in a fairly predictable fashion (a conventional wisdom and groupthink that has proven to be surprisingly enduring): Evans was a kind of Paul to Quimby’s Jesus or a Plato to Quimby’s Socrates. In this conventional wisdom Evans was a disciple of Quimby and was the first one to publish the theories of Quimby, when he published his works on mental healing, starting in 1869 with The Mental-Cure. Conventional wisdom continued that Evans was a patient of Quimby, was healed by him, and then decided that he wanted to heal in public as Quimby did; he discussed this with Quimby who told him that he thought Evans could in fact heal in the same manner.
