Villa Wolf Estate Was Founded in 1756 by Johann Ludwig Wolf and Was a Highly Tregarded Winery for More Than Two Centuries
ROOTS OF THE WINE he Villa Wolf estate was founded in 1756 by Johann Ludwig Wolf and was a highly Tregarded winery for more than two centuries. It entered an especially glamorous era in 1843 with the construction of an Italianate estate house and villa, which give the estate its current name. In the latter years of the 20th century, however, the vineyards and winery fell into a period of neglect until Ernst Loosen took them over in 1996, launching a dra- matic turnaround in the estate’s quality and reputation. Ernst Loosen’s goal at Villa Wolf is to make full-bodied, traditionally crafted Pfalz wines to complement the lighter, more delicate Dr. Loosen wines from the Mosel. In addition to Riesling, the Pfalz region has a long tradition with other classic grape varieties, which has allowed Ernst to expand his winemaking palette to include Gewürztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. At both the Dr. Loosen estate in the Mosel and the Villa Wolf estate in the Pfalz, Ernst strives to make authentic wines that convey the stylistic traditions of each region, the character of each grape variety, and the distinctive terroir of each vineyard site. The entrance to the Italianate Villa Wolf estate house, designed by famed German architect Friedrich Eisenlohr. 1 THE PFALZ REGION ocated in the heart of the Pfalz LL(pronounced “faults”) region of Germany, Villa Wolf lies between the Haardt Mountains and the Rhine River, directly north of France’s Alsace region. The mountains are relatively small, but they protect the Pfalz from cold, wet Atlantic weather, making it one of the warmer and drier areas of Germany. -

THE WINE ADVOCATE #229 STEPHAN REINHARDT, 28th Feb 2017 2015 ZEHNTHOF LUCKERT • SYLVANER CREUTZ *** From what is most likely the world’s oldest Sylvaner vineyard (planted in 1870) and, thus, a field blend of all different kinds of Sylvaners such as Gelber (yellow), Roter (red), Blauer (blue) and Muscat-Sylvaner (Sauvignon Blanc), the 2015 Sylvaner Creutz *** is a fascinating wine not just because of its incredible story but its unique flavors and taste! The wine opens very clear and pure and with lovely fruit aromas that a modern Grüner (green) Sylvaner doesn’t give. In fact, there are some muscat flavors here and a subtle intensity you can only find in -un grafted vines, which are extremely rare in Franken. This vineyard is located in a building land, but for some obscure reasons it survived, probably because it is too steep. Uli Luckert discov- ered it in 2011 and made the deal of his life: He got permission to cultivate it and has to pay 12 Bocksbeutel per year for that. The result in 2015 is gorgeous! This is an intense but highly delicate and elegant Sylvaner with lots of energy, finesse and juicy tension. Slightly creamy from the long lees contact until July but provided with very fine tannins, super delicate acidity and a stimulating grip, this is one of the most fascinating Sylvaners I have tasted in the last 12 months if not in years! Some Zinnkoepflé Sylvaner from Southern Alsace comes to my mind (also from limestone soils), but a dry and lush one like this? Not a single one. -

CHRISTOPHER WINES Located in Oregon’s Northern Willamette Valley, J. Christopher Wines is a small winery that specializes in Pinot Noir made in the traditional style of Burgundy, and in Sauvignon Blanc modeled after the great wines of Sancerre. The winery is co-owned by Jay Somers, who has been making wine in Oregon for more than 20 years, and Ernst Loosen, owner of the Dr. Loosen estate in Germany. Their shared philosophy is to produce wines in an Old World style that emphasizes focus, length and balance. APPASSIONATA PINOT NOIR Appassionata is a direct result of the friendship between Jay and Ernst, two dedicated wine- makers who share an overriding passion for Pinot Noir. It is the original collaboration cuvée that they started with the 2005 vintage, and represents the pinnacle of our production each year. To assemble the wine, they select a few of the very best barrels, with a distinctive com- bination of clones, terroirs and cooperages, to produce an elegant, age-worthy Pinot Noir with pure Oregon fruit and fine Old World structure. Each vintage is released only when Jay and Erni feel that it is ready to drink. THE 2008 VINTAGE Now legendary, 2008 was a nearly perfect vintage in Oregon. A long, cool growing season resulted in a small crop (about 20 percent below average) that benefited from long hang time — the ideal conditions for Pinot Noir. Beautiful weather during harvest allowed us to pick at optimal ripeness. -

VarietiesPORTUGUESE GRAPE VARIETIES For the most part Portuguese grape growers have wisely resisted the impulse to plant “foreign” grape varieties and instead have gone forward with making wines that are uniquely regional. So at a time when critics complain that wines from throughout the world are beginning to taste similar, Portugal’s commitment to native varieties means that it continues to make indigenous styles of wine. This means that although winemakers may be fermenting and aging wines in the same manner that their colleagues elsewhere have been doing for some time. Unique conditions and historic grape varieties insure that Portuguese wines will remain distinctively different. The future is very bright, but even today, after only a brief time of orientation to the world market, Portugal is producing some of the world’s most exciting wines, especially when the concept of “value” factors into the equation, as it always must do in assessing any commercial product. Throughout the country better varietals are being planted in more suitable soils and growing conditions. There is a new generation of winemaker eager to discover the quality potential of their properties. The awareness has dawned that the best wine originates in the vineyard. Along with this spirit, a trend has developed to produce varietal wines from native grapes that constitutes one of the most interesting aspects of the current Portuguese wine scene. Quantities are miniscule but the wines have developed a devoted following on the domestic market. Unfortunately few are yet available for export. whiteWHITE VARIETALS ALVARINHO: An aromatic varietal (acacia flowers, apple, honey) this grape produces outstanding white wines in a small sub-region of the Vinho Verde DO around Melgaço and Monção.
