The island was discovered by Gerlache’s Belgica expedition of 1897-9, and named after a vice-admiral in the French Navy. This small rocky island has vertical cliffs measuring 200 m (650 ft) in elevation with extensive moss cover. Cuverville Island is home to the largest colony in the region (5,000 breeding pairs), along with southern giant petrels, kelp gulls, Antarctic terns, snowy sheathbills and south polar skuas.

BROWN BASE’S original facilities were burned down by the station's doctor on 12 April 1984.Station personnel was rescued by the ship USS Hero and taken to United States’s Palmer Station. Argentina rebuilt the base but it was demoted to summer-only status. During the summer campaign of 1995–96 the Logistics Department of the Argentine National Antarctic Directorate built two new habitable modules: a laboratory and a house with amenities. In the 1999–2000 campaign the Directorate built a new main house capable of comfortably accommodating 8 people; the new building consists of 4 bedrooms, kitchen and 2 bathrooms.Brown slipped into several years of inactivity during the 2000s decade but since 2007 is occupied during the summer again

LEMAIRE CHANNEL is an 11 km long by 1.6 km wide (7 mi by 1 mi) passage that runs from False Cape Renard to Cape Cloos, separating Booth Island from the Antarctic continent. It was discovered by Dallmann’s German expedition of 1873 but Gerlache was the first to navigate the channel in 1898 and named it in honour of Charles Lemaire, a Belgian explorer of the Congo. At its narrowest, the Lemaire Channel is less than 800 m (0.5 mi) wide with towering peaks in excess of 300 m (985 ft) overhead. The channel can be full of icebergs and sea ice which makes manoeuvring difficult. However, this is a good location for seeing seals hauled out on ice floes.

Grass and moss can also be found on the northern section of the island once snow melts. There are stunning views from Petermann Island both looking north towards the Lemaire Channel and south, to the mountains of Graham Land.

The Ukraine’s AKADEMIK VERNADSKY STATION is located on within the . It was purchased from the British for a nominal price of one pound in 1996, as it was cheaper for them to sell the station than remove the buildings. As a British hut, Faraday base or Station F, was occupied continuously for 49 years between 1947 and 1996. Research conducted from this site focused on geophysics, meteorology and ionospherics. This is also where scientists first observed a depletion in the ozone layer, known as the ozone hole. The Ukrainian scientists at Vernadsky are continuing this ozone research in addition to studies focusing on geomagnetism, meteorology and glaciology.
