2007 International CES JANUARY 8, 2007 Bob Iger, President and Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company PREPARED REMARKS ONLY. PLEASE NOTE THAT PORTIONS OF THE FOLLOWING PRESENTATION WERE EXTEMPORANEOUS AND AD LIBBED AND THOSE PORTIONS ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THE TRANSCRIPT BELOW. Bob Iger – President and Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company Good afternoon. It’s great to be here. Since the day Walt Disney started this company, Disney has had one secret to its success: bringing the timelessness of great characters and powerful storytelling to the timeliness of the cutting edge. From the multi-plane camera that reinvented animation in 1942 to the mega- gigahertz processing of computer animation of today, Disney is a company where art challenges technology and technology inspires art. Artists are constantly seeking new ways to fulfill their creative visions. Technology provides them the tools to scale new imaginative heights. Today, technology empowers the consumer more than ever before and we use it to deliver quality content in the most convenient and timely way possible, to every screen within reach and at a price that makes it a genuine value. We are witnessing an explosion of media and Disney is both reaping the benefits of that explosion and acting as a catalyst by taking a technology-friendly approach. Page 1 2007 International CES January 8, 2007 I am proud to say we were the first company to put movies and TV shows on iTunes, helping to accelerate a consumer revolution. As suppliers of some of the best-branded and highest –quality content in the world, we both create and satisfy demand.

The Presence of Performance and the Stakes of Serial Drama: Accrual, Transience, Companionship Elliott Logan MPhil (University of Queensland, 2013) BA, Hons (University of Queensland, 2009) BA (University of Queensland, 2007) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2018 School of Communication and Arts Abstract This thesis shows how performance is a critically neglected but crucial aspect of serial television drama as an art form. One of serial drama’s obvious storytelling attractions is its ability to involve viewers in relationships between characters over long periods of time. Such involvement takes place through a recurring structure of episodes and seasons, whose unfolding reflects the extensive, ongoing history through which interpersonal bonds form and develop, deepen and decay. The characters we watch onscreen are embodied and performed by actors. Television studies, however, has persistently overlooked screen performance, hampering appreciation of serial drama’s affinity with long-term relationships as a resource for aesthetic significance. Redressing such neglect, this thesis directs new critical attention to expressive stylistic relationships between serial form, screen performance, and the subject of companionship in some recent US serial dramas. The focus of that attention is a particular aesthetic quality: the provisional, which emerges through serial drama’s distinctive tension between permanence and transience. In the first chapter, I argue that the provisional is central to an affinity between screen performance, seriality in television drama, and companionship as an aspect of human life. Chapters Two and Three then show how the art of the provisional in particular series has been underappreciated due to television studies’ neglect of performance and expressiveness as dimensions of serial form in television fiction.

IN LOVE IN A MOVIE: WOMEN AND CONTEMPORARY ROMANTIC COMEDY By ANDREA ROCHELLE MABRY A DISSERTATION PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 2004 Copyright 2004 by Andrea Rochelle Mabry For Olivia and Grace ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This dissertation is very much a collaborative effort, and for its existence I am indebted to a great many people. I first wish to express my appreciation to the faculty of the University of Florida Department of English, particularly the members of my dissertation committee. Professor Maureen Turim, my advisor and dissertation director, has been an invaluable mentor, not only over the course of this project, but throughout my studies at Florida. Her guidance in the writing of this dissertation, from the original seed of an idea to the final reading, has been invaluable. I am also truly grateful to Professors Susan Hegeman, Roger Beebe, and Nora Alter for their enthusiasm, their advice, and their encouragement to take my work to new levels. My thanks also go out to my fellow graduate students in the Florida English Department for their friendship and their good humor. The camaraderie of other students helped lighten many a stressful day as I worked to complete this journey. Finally, my family—Mom, Dad, Linda, Christine, Tony, Olivia and Grace—have always provided me with love and support, not just as I wrote this dissertation, but all along the road I have taken to get to this point. For that they have my love and my thanks.
