Colony Report Complete Report Due: Tuesday, April 19, 2016

You have seven weeks to complete your final typed (in Google Docs) and printed report. I have listed suggested benchmark due dates as a pacing guide to help you plan out and stay on top of this long term project. You will be doing much of your work at home, with some class time with time permitting. Your report should be set up into the sections that are described below. The report will be typed. Each section should be in paragraph form using at least 6 sentences in each paragraph. Remember: a paragraph includes a topic sentence, details supporting the topic, and a final concluding sentence. You need to make sure your report is in your own words. It is most helpful to write down 3 or 4 words for each section below in your note taking so you can turn it into your own words. You will need to organize your own note-taking strategies and best ways of being organized! Your report should not be more than 10 pages long.

Introduction: Due: 4 ● Describe your colony. Who were the first people to arrive and where did they come from? Identify the major individuals and groups responsible for the founding of your colony and the reason: who were the founding people? When and why was it founded? Why did colonists choose your area? (Who, what, what, where, when, why!)

Geography: Due: March 11 ● Describe the geographical location of the colony you are studying and how it influenced the colonists. Include what it is located, and explain how the first colonists arrived there. Describe the climate and any important geographical features. What agriculture did they have? ○ PICTURE: Include a colored map of your colony state and identify on the map the locations of the original colony and of the American Indian nations already inhabiting these areas. What were their beliefs and how did it differ than their homeland. What belief systems (ideas, practices, allegiances, religious toleration and freedom) shifted or changed. ● What role did religion play in their daily lives/how did religion impact their lives?

Economy: Due: April 1 ● Describe their economic system. How did they make money. What is the freemarket economic system and how was it different than their homeland? What jobs did your colony have and how did they earn money for living? ○ Main industry, crops, and livestock that shaped their economy? ○ What were their major sources of food and how did they get these foods (farming, hunting, fishing trading)?

People and Culture Due: April 8 ● This part ought to be fun and does not need to include every area listed: ○ What types of housing did they live in? What were some of the other buildings they made? How did they set up their ? ○ How did they interact with the natives already living there? ○ What were their daily lives like? ■ What did they wear? ■ What did kids do for fun? Games they played? ■ What was school like for the kids? ■ What did they use for transportation? ■ Anything else that interests you? ○ PICTURE: include a picture from any aspect you talk about from this section with a caption ● Include a blurb and a portrait about a famous historical person from your colony: ○ Why are they important or famous? What contributions did they make to your state? What are their accomplishments? How did they help shape the culture of your state? ○ PICTURE: Colonist portrait with a caption. (Your caption could include the information listed above instead of writing another paragraph).

Interesting facts and Conclusion Due: April 15 ● Does your colony have any odd, weird or wacky laws? Did they have any unusual/different ways of life? ● Any other interesting facts and details? ● Any comparisons from your colony with today’s state? ● Include a solid, summarizing conclusion at the end.

Your report needs to be typed using New Times or Arial Font size 12 or 14, and should be double spaced. (Please ask for assistance if you are not sure how to program your document to do this for you. You do not need to push the enter key unless you are starting a new paragraph!) The sections of your report need to have heading at the beginning of each new topic. You can make each section ongoing in one continuous report, or you can make them their own new page. Each section will be found in the Table of Contents. Each of these pages will have numbers located at the bottom of the page in the lower right hand corner that will correspond to the Table of Contents:

Your report will include: Folder Title/Cover Page Table of Contents
