We received daily ASOS gauge rainfall from three different sources, North Carolina State sites. Additionally, we had four gauges at Automated Weather Observing Systems (AWOS) Climate Office (NCSCO), National Climate Data Center (NCDC), and a private web server (wunderground.com) which site, three at Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station (VAES), one at Fire Management Wallops Main, VA broadcasts METAR reports. In this study, we deployed at each site except at ASOS sites where dual gauge platforms were situated. used NCDC after diagnosing all the problematic features of the data sets. The readings of the ASOS daily rainfall in NCDC are all in local standard time. The missing data and/or malfunction of the gauge are the leading factors for the 39 N poor performance of the ASOS gauges. In the presence of heavy rain, identified by ASOS present weather algorithm and collocated TRMM gauges, ASOS gauges, in some cases, either stop reading or not report at all. On other occasions where the conditions were calm or cloudy, ASOS gauge read 40 mm in one hour! The false tips were also resulted from deposition, identified by present weather algorithm and marked next to the rainfall in NCDC report. Although Ocean City deposition results in single tip, NCDC daily accumulation showed false tips up to 5 mm. These marked false tips and Salisbury snowy days also identified by present sensor algorithms were excluded from the analysis. 1 1 1 1 For the daily rainfall, we run the statistical package in two different conditions. First, tipping bucket gauge that is manufactured by Texas Electronics (model 6118-1). Although METAR codes reports daily rainfall, it was inconsistent with the G18B Monthly Rainfall (mm) G18B Monthly Rainfall (mm) G13B Monthly Rainfall (mm) G13B Monthly Rainfall (mm) This eliminates very light rainy days from the rainfall statistics, but not gauge sum of 24-hour rainfall. We received AWOS gauge reports from NCSCO, NCDC, and private web site. Like in malfunction that often results in no rain record. The rainfall statistics between the ASOS, we found inconstancy between private web site and NCDC and decided to use NCDC hourly rainfall which is TRMM gauges intend to be used as a reference and therefore we did not include the given in local standard time. Like ASOS, AWOS sites are equipped with present weather sensor that is used to rainy days if only one of the TRMM gauge record 1.2+ mm of rainfall. Second, we determine the snow days. requested that both TRMM and operational gauges had at least 1.2 mm of rainfall. This FM- Back Bay, VA subset demonstrates the agreement between the gauges when all were operating. AWOS- Petersburg, VA
