As a rowdy, confrontational young artist in Tokyo, Ushio seemed destined for fame, but met with little commercial success after he moved to New York City in 1969, seeking international recognition. When 19-year-old Noriko moved to New York to study art, she fell in love with Ushio—abandoning her education to become the wife and assistant to an unruly, husband. Over the course of their marriage, the roles have shifted. Now 80, Ushio struggles to establish his artistic legacy, while Noriko is at last being recognized for her own art—a series of drawings entitled “Cutie,” depicting her challenging past with Ushio. Spanning four decades, the film is a moving portrait of a couple wrestling with the eternal themes of sacrifice, disappointment and aging, against a background of lives dedicated to art. LONG SYNPOSIS Cutie and the Boxer is an intimate, observational documentary chronicling the unique love story between Ushio and Noriko Shinohara, married Japanese artists living in New York. Bound by years of quiet resentment, disappointments and missed professional opportunities, they are locked in a hard, dependent love. -

Journey to the Academy Awards: A Decade of Race & Gender in Oscar-Shortlisted Documentaries (2008-2017) PRELIMINARY KEY FINDINGS Caty Borum Chattoo, Nesima Aberra, Michele Alexander, Chandler Green1 February 2017 In the Best Documentary Feature category of the Academy Awards, 2017 is a year of firsts. For the first time, four of the five Oscar-nominated documentary directors in the category are people of color (Roger Ross Williams, for Life, Animated; Ezra Edelman, for O.J.: Made in America; Ava DuVernay, for 13th; and Raoul Peck, for I Am Not Your Negro). In fact, 2017 reveals the largest percentage of Oscar-shortlisted documentary directors of color over at least the past decade. Almost a third (29%) of this year’s 17 credited Oscar-shortlisted documentary directors (in the Best Documentary Feature category) are people of color, up from 18 percent in 2016, none in 2015, and 17 percent in 2014. The percentage of recognized women documentary directors, while an increase from last year (24 percent of recognized shortlisted directors in 2017 are women, compared to 18 percent in 2016), remains at relatively the same low level of recognition over the past decade. In 2016, as a response to widespread criticism and negative media coverage, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences welcomed a record number of new members to become part of the voting class to bestow Academy Awards: 683 film professionals (46 percent women, 41 percent people of color) were invited in.2 According to the Academy, prior to this new 2016 class, its membership was 92 percent white and 75 percent male.3 To represent the documentary category, 42 new documentary creative professionals (directors and producers) were invited as new members. -

(email) [email protected] Julia Sizek, Reader [email protected] Course Description History of Documentary covers the evolution of primarily American documentary film from the first moving images to the present. We will focus on both commissioned and independent films, produced for a variety of distribution models including theatrical, broadcast and digital. Where possible, we will also discuss international documentaries, the current documentary landscape, and big-picture field and career insights. Please note that this course is prerequisite for graduate students who intend to enroll in the documentary thesis seminar in their second year. In addition to a historical and genre overview, we will concentrate on the practicalities of producing non-fiction documentaries for broad audiences, and on documentary materials, structure, genre, points-of-view and ethics. Considering issues of representation, race, class, gender, identity and power, we will debate and deconstruct the ways in which documentary film has both upheld and challenged some of the U.S.’s most entrenched and problematic narratives. The class’ success demands that students keep up with screening, reading and writing. I hope the class will be fun, interesting, inspiring, and occasionally paradigm shifting as we delve into deep philosophical, creative and journalism questions. House Rules Class starts at 2pm sharp on Wednesdays in the TV Lab, adjourning at 5:00pm. This syllabus is a living document and will change from time to time.
